notes
LIVE IN BADEN-BADEN, the MOONLIGHTERS' third self-released CD on their ONLIEST RECORDS label, documents their 2002 German tour. The recording was made for German National Radio and recorded before a live audience.
The band on the tour included Bliss Blood, ukulele and vocals, Carla Murray, guitar & vocals, Henry Bogdan, accoustic and Hawaiian lap steel guitar, Andrew Hall on accoustic bass, and Michael Arenella on trombone.
The album features brand new compositions written after completion of their 2nd CD, HELLO HEARTSTRING, like the Merle Travis-inspired tune "Desperado", an ode to Bonnie and Clyde; the surging railroad hobo tune "THE BALLAD OF A GINK", and the eerie "CHAINING UP THE MOONLIGHT", unrecorded cover favorites making a first appearance like "My Blackbirds are Bluebirds Now" and "When I Take my Sugar to Tea" as well as many of the top tunes from HELLO HEARTSTRING, "Sweet Man", "Mississippi," "Beyond the Reef" and "Hello Heartstring" and from DREAMLAND, "Blue and Black-Eyed", and steel guitar extravaganzas "Honolulu March" and "Hawaiian Blues". There's even an encore track, the old hokum blues double-entendre "Mr. Mitchell" ("I'm crazy 'bout your sweet poontang"!)
The element of trombone adds a jazzy element to the tunes, making this essential even for those with the original two cds.

A new favorite!
author: General KenobiI only recently discovered Bliss Blood and the Moonlighters, this album was my first purchase. This is in constant rotation in my large collection. Bliss is simply amazing, her range and vocal texture really hits a real sonic sweet spot, total ear candy! The recording quality on the album is actually really good as well. Vocals sound exceptionally clear and the instruments are refined and maintain good detail. The style of the music is very unique and it has a tone that can go from dark to fun and in between. The harmonies of Bliss Blood and Carla Murray are exceptional and the bass, guitar, uke, and steel guitar are no slouch either. Highly recommended for any fans of female vocals and anyone else searching for a genre defying esoteric instant favorite!

There's no humanly way to sit still, to keep from tapping a toe or jiggling in your seat when the Moonlighters do their thing. Mastering the early swing jazz from the 1920s and 1930s, their delightful, almost giddy sound is infectiously pleasing and lighthearted. With sweet, birdsong female vocals leading the way, their fun, well-versed mix of country western swing, dixieland, early jazz, gypsy jazz and vaudeville-feeling cabaret is hard to resist. If you're looking for a gem of an album to lighten up and brighten up your world, here it is.
