notes
Unusual, weird, ethnic, worldbeat.
Shades of David Byrne and Frank Zappa.
All this from a mysterious woman named Lucy Mongrel.
You will hear African, Cuban, Brazilian and Spanish rhythms filter through the music of Lucy and her group of musicians. (Music which they choose to call Mongrel Music.)
Come on and hang over the musical ledge and howl to the weird tunes written by the full moon.
The musicians (including Lucy), performing on "Mongrel", have long musical histories, appearing with such notables as Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Nils Lofgren, Etta James, Brain Auger, Jimmy Page, The Kingsmen and Duke Ellington. Collectively they have been the recipients or nominated for over thirty musical awards!
Calling all adventurous musical ears. You WILL love this CD. Recommended by CD Baby staff.

I would like to listen to...
author: James Bean...a duet sung by Lucy Mongrel and Heino Kapbusch in mandarin Chinese. This would be the paramount experience for the auditory system of every human being.
Thank God for this CD!
author: J C, SwedenWhat makes this music so impossible to release? It's about 100 times better than ANYTHING you'd hear on MTV or Top Ten these days! God bless Lucy Mongrel and keep on roaring! This is the best album I've bought for ages.

Well this is sure a diversion from what we usually get…..you’re right in the comparison with David Byrnes…..all of us around are reminded of Laurie Anderson…….the talent is evident, but I don’t know of one British label that would take something like this

In mid-April I received on of the best examples of humor that draws a reviewer in. The CD is Lucy Mongrel from joerecords.com. The CD has some unique press quotes that still stick out in my mind. The CD itself is an eclectic collection of genre mixing that proves experimentation by professionals still exists. This experimentation is bold, powerful and provocative. Joerecords.com, one of the best new indie labels, must be complimented for the signing of Lucy Mongrel.

as for ‘Livin’ the Blues’, all I can say is what??? This album is very over the top! I don’t understand where you were leading to with this one but I guess it’s better to just listen sometimes and not think. I don’t know which was more hilarious the album or the bio??

Well, what can I say? Lucy Mongrel for President! ......... thoroughly enjoyed the album. Got some very mixed reactions round here, "Danielle Dax meets Skeeter Davis" came one cry! Yes, I can understand why nobody can work out what sort of music this is, defies pigeonholes, which we think is great...though the "music biz" seems to think otherwise. I've never been sure if excessive originality is a benefit or hindrance to an artiste's career? It should be a benefit. Strange world, we live in, huh? Lucy Mongrel will be going in my own personal collection whatever! Superb album.

Had a good listen to the CD; it's extremely well done, quite excellent - but inevitably tough to license as it’s actually original. I honestly don't know where to recommend; the labels are all quite conservative (even a lot of the indies), and the big guys would all be looking for a single; which in their terms is probably "Freedom", though they'd want to change the approach……Great……very interesting arrangements and amazing vocals. Well done, you made a good record, and that’s not an easy thing to do. If I do think of anything I'll let you know

This CD rings Byrnesque through and through lyrically, melodically and rhythmically, and yet it is fresh, imaginative and daring. The musicianship is extraordinary! The lyrics are thoughtful, expressive and humorous at times……..it’s like Frank Zappa or David Byrne on the estrogen patch. I don’t know where to begin to describe the bold rhythms and percussion masterfully executed by Steve Peterson. He throws lumber like the Tito Puente of the lumberyard…the Paul Bunyan of Rhythm….the northwest meets the Bayou…..superb!

You have found a delicious mixture/music style. I think it’s swell…..other people around here do too……Hmmm, wonder what that tells me about our staff

FEMMUSIC will have Letters from the Editor. On one I would like to use Lucy Mongrel CD as an example…….have you scheduled any Mongrel music shows in Seattle? You may have given me a giant reason to visit.

The more bizarre a release (bizarre to industry standards),the larger the press kit. Ms. Mongrel outweighs the mailings of any other three put together, more than we could possibly read. I will say this, there's a lot of stuff rattling around this girl's voice, good stuff from a wide array of musical styles. She sounds like she attracts that sort of thing. A versatile, adorable girlish voice that everybody jumps to play backup for

I found all the arrangements really interesting, especially the percussion. My favorite track is "Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed". The vocals could be a bit grating at times and some of the songs could do with more melodic hooks I think. However I do believe there is market for this kind of material here in the UK. The best way forward, in my opinion, would be to get a late-night radio station to play it, and develop a cult following that way. I can't see a major label willing to take it on upfront. I think all we can do for now is to keep the CD on file and maybe a couple of tracks on disk in case we come up with any suitable leads for promotion. If we hear of anything we'll be in touch
The reason its taken so long is that my A&R guy Andy had it for some time while I was away on holiday in August. He passed it on to me and I've had it around the house since then, listening to it on and off when I've had a spare moment. Unlike most of the stuff we get in its not something you can make an instant judgement on. Andy didn't really like it, but he is only 21 and didn't grow up like me listening to artists like Frank Zappa. For myself I have always had a soft spot the avant-garde and know that albums like these need some time to really get into.

Check out the Lucy Mongrel review in our January Issue. Not only is there a review, but a prominent placement on the cover of this issue of the zine. I liked this CD so much, that I reviewed it myself – something I don’t get the time to do very often anymore!

I love Lucy Mongrel, I would describe it as having much of the quirky charm of Lene Lovich, a touch of Kate Bush (the original Tori Amos) really fun, great unexpected twists, lyrics often spilling over into poetry! cool!!

Lucy Mongrel might sound like she’s from another planet but we assure you that everything she does is very Earthly. Lucy doesn’t hold herself to one style or one genre for more then a few minutes at a time. Her musical attention span is very short which allows her to move on and investigate other avenues. This truly makes for a fresh sound that is truly World music. For some truly original, and imaginative World music, check out Lucy today

Lucy, Lucy, Lucy! Your CD has become a favorite here on KRVS on my morning show called THE MEDICINE BALL CARAVAN. The release is completely off of every musical map I've ever slid my finger across. The station is 100,000-watts stretching like super putty across the bayou lands down south. And I'm sure it annoys the hell out of customers in shops who use the station as background music for their customers (yes, many have bitched to the manager but I cease to heal to conformity). Anyway, thanks a heap for the incredible station I.D. you recorded for the show...it airs quite frequently, dahhhlluunn! If ever you're bored and feel like creating more spots for the show, I'd erect a monument to ya. Keep crankin' out the stuff and I'll unleash it on an unsuspecting public.....I'm truly and utterly charmed and stung as though with cactus pricks each time I listen to your recording. "Never judge books by their covers", the old cliche goes. When I first dug up your CD amongst the daily pile of unglittering new releases, yours managed to get pushed to the back of the "review pile" with dozens of other new singer/songwriter AAA-types. Once I managed to give it a "go-thru", I could've kicked myself for letting it sit unnoticed and unplayed for about a month. But I'm making up for lost time now and beg your forgiveness, oh supreme being! Would it be at all possible for me to conduct a live on-air interview with you on THE MEDICINE BALL CARAVAN someday??? It'd be such a blast! Until later, remember: Life Is A Hole...Dig!

Lucy Mongrel is a musical endeavor that you may need to be sitting down and concentrating on to fully soak in all of its splendor and mystery. Headed up by Kate Hart, this 14 track disc is an eclectic mix of world beat, folk, blues and pop-rock that delves into diverse styles and displays many sounds that our American ears may not be privy to ("Quicksand Passion", "Thank You"). Hart's soothing ("Don't Call It Too Late", "Papa Legba") and disjointed ("Meet In The Streets") vocals are a standout here, as they set the mood for each individual song, making the album a true collection of 14 unique songs. Lucy Mongrel bridges the gap between musical and cultural boundaries much like Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel have in the past by implementing many different culture's sounds and instrumentation. Where else can you hear bagpipes and banjos intertwine? If you're looking for something that's way out in left field but spiritually uplifting and an overall musical triumph, look no further than this eponymous disc.

Call it an appealing oddity. She sounds like Lene Lovich, and there are plenty of '80s touches on this disc, but also a global sensibility to the rhythms that takes it out of the retro-New Wave category. While not for everyone, it should appeal to those with suitably twisted minds

Hi, I’m going to say something that you’ve probably heard before, I love Lucy’s stuff but I’m not sure if I wanna risk my ass releasing it in the UK, though if “Max the Circus Cat” doesn’t get at least a single of the week, well………You’ll have to wait for my devil to gnaw away at me a bit more…..will keep in touch….let me know if there are any plans to come to the UK. Check out Dufus….a joint tour over here with them would be wonderful…..Thanks

I listened to Lucy Mongrel and it knocked me out! What a daring change of pace. This album needs to get out to the world. ‘Who’s Been Sleeping In My Bed’ oddly reminds me of the theme song to an obscure spaghetti western called MANAJA, scored by the elusive and weird De Angelis Brothers.
