notes

How many people do you know with only one style of music in their iPods?

.................................................... Mo'J ...................................................
.................................... (pronounced: "Moe-Jay") ....................................

Exploring the inner reaches of the human spirit, soul and mind, Mo’J simultaneously resists and embraces tradition with every note. Creating music they describe as ‘Beyond Category’, Mo’J constructs melodies rich with the influences of Soul, Funk, R&B, Rock, Jazz and Latin rhythms.

Mo’J began in 2002 as a dream shared by then long-time friends Monica Lynk and Jason Anderson. Raised in Lorain, Ohio, Monica’s roots were heavily grounded in the music she sang in church as well as the chart-toppers she heard on the radio. Jason’s beginnings were equally eclectic as he internalized the classic Rock & Soul of his parents' record collection, as well as the rich jazz scene of his hometown Portland, Oregon.

As destiny would have it, both were chosen as full tuition scholarship recipients to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There at Berklee, surrounded by a deluge of cultural & musical diversity, Mo & J found each other. As their knowledge and love for music grew, so did their friendship. In the Fall of 2003, Jason and Monica were married, and in so doing, married their individual musical styles into a new music.

Adopting a phrase commonly used by the great Duke Ellington to describe the talents of those whose music surpassed preconceived styles and formulas, Mo’J chooses to call their music “Beyond Category”. Jason and Monica have this to say about their music, “Our music is about truth. We feel that music is a living entity; it has no boundaries to hold its expression, substance, or message. We try to address current personal, spiritual, social, and political issues and inspire our listeners to expand their minds, hearts, and souls.” Choosing to use live instruments and allow their music to change and evolve through the individuality of each musician, Mo’J has rejected many of today’s common practices of entirely sequencing and programming music.

Together they have toured the world extensively and performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues. Whether performing to sold-out crowds in Japan or a handful of poverty-stricken children in Burkina Faso, Mo'J encapsulates its audience. Free to express themselves without boundaries, Mo'J speaks to the soul of every man, woman & child regardless of race, age, language or category.

    THIS IS A NICE CD

  • Beyond Category
    author: Charles Brown

MO's voice is invigorating and astounding. She has a taste of Nancy Wilson in her style. I had a few of my old Motown friends listen to the CD. They were indeed moved by the strength of her voice; tone; and her invigorating style. I am curious to know what MO has planned for the future. With the right marketing; there is no reason why she shouldn't become a great star. There are a lot of great singers out there. However; now and then an amazing singer comes along; such as Aretha Franklin and Nancy Wilson. The only reason why she will not reach the level of Aretha and Nancy is because of poor marketing or a desire to not do so. That would be a great shame. If she is desirous of reaching the top of the mountain; she must make a crossover to R&B. Take it from an old man who did reach the top of that mountain; you only get one shot at the gold on the top of that mountain. "GOD" blessed you with a beautiful voice; so go for it. Life is but a circle of experiences. You need to become "full circle". MO, I have known your mother, Alexis Malone, ever since the eighth grade in D.C. Your mother is a classy and impressive woman and so is her daughter, MO. The next time that you talk to your mother; tell her that Charles Brown said, "hello". No matter what you do; I wish you the best of luck! Charles Her voice demands that
