notes

When asked to describe her music, singer/songwriter MK Gallina answers, with a slight laugh, "soulful pop-infused rock." But even that definition falls far short. With a sound that acknowledges such diverse influences as Norah Jones and the Dixie Chicks, and a storytelling style that offers sly nods to heroes Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen, MK Gallina has created something all her own. Her shy and quiet demeanor belies the presence and power of her voice -- a voice that can make even the most heartbreaking of songs into a sing-along anthem; a voice that can give you chills, and then turn on a dime and make you laugh; a voice that says, "I know. I've been there, too."

She was born in Pennsylvania and raised on the east coast by a big, fat Italian family before uprooting to the midwest in the early 90's. Throughout her youth she spent much of her time on stage, performing in everything from The Wizard Of Oz (as a munchkin at age 6) to The Wizard Of Oz (as Dorothy at the ripe old age of 17). A child who grew up singing in church choirs and musicals, she began playing piano at an early age. She has fronted numerous pop, r&b and rock bands in the Midwest; has worked in radio; has taught music to schoolchildren; and has an extensive professional stage background that includes musical theatre and opera.

After 4 years of planting her feet and feeling out the windiest of cities, she is releasing her first solo effort, "10 spot" to the public in the summer of 2003. She will spend most of the next year shopping and performing alongside her new CD, and in the studio with producer/composer Dieter Frank.

i can't decide what's more impressive. mk's voice or her songs. on the one hand you've got these pipes that are all at once sexy, soulful, vulnerable and innocent, huge, present and sure; a voice that doesn't give a damn though it makes you feel like the most important thing in the universe. on the other you've got these songs that are brilliant, witty, thought provoking, naughty, touching and just plain solid. MK's "10 spot" substitutes the bubblegum in pop music with a whiskey chaser.

MK and her cohorts have a knack for lyrics a person can relate to, and while her voice is suited for the type of music she presents, some of the songs sound a bit forced, causing her voice to lose it's natural sound and crack, or warble - her cover of the Concrete Blonde classic, Joey, is especially beautiful with the paino backing, however the channeling of her inner-Alanis at the end does throw off the beauty the song had worked to create initially. All in all the songs are well written, performed nicely, and are just the right mix of everything to get stuck in your head, in that good way.

  • The best sound I have hear in years...

This CD is an inspiration to me, and I am sure other artists out there. Each songs lyrics were very well chosen and very well put. I am looking forward to hearing more songs from this artist.

  • Emotional and raw, a refreshing sound in such a processed music world.

To say that music can bring about any emotion is to describe this CD. MK is powerful with her lyrics and her musical talent. The CD has a live, acoustic feel that makes it all the more real and rare in the music biz today.

This CD blew me away. Not a bad track to be found, and the best voice I have heard in a long time. Simple and effective use of an amazing gift.

  • This cd is incredible.

I really love this cd. MK's voice is very soothing, very soulful. I find it rare to have a cd where I love every song on it, but this is one I can truly say I love every song. She is not only an amazing singer, but also a wonderful songwriter. She definitely should have won the AOL First Break contest. But this girl will make it on her own, I have no doubt. I highly recommend this cd.

  • Wow. THIS ROCKS!!

To keep it short, let me just say this album is tight and brilliant and original start to finish. I can't wait to catch her live based on the strength of this CD. I am sure we will be hearing big things soon. Music this good finds a way to be heard. BUY THIS CD, you won't be sorry. The vocals are amazing, and today's teen pop songstresses could learn a thing or two by taking a listen.
