notes

"Charismatically gifted... his voice is remarkably expressive... Jordan's musical ability is often stunning." - Bernard Baur, Music Connection Magazine

"He's a pro, he can just do *anything*." - Vanessa Carlton on MTV "Duets"

"A welcome addition to the family of piano songsters." - John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting

Drawing upon influences as diverse as the Beatles, Brian Wilson, Billy Joel, Ben Folds, Steely Dan and many others, keyboard player, singer and songwriter Matthew Jordan has woven a sound and style that's uniquely his own. Matthew regularly floors jaded audiences who never expect one who looks so young to possess such enormous "chops," as they say in the biz. His talent hits 'em like a diesel truck goin' ninety. In 2002, Matt joined Tonos.com, the online music community founded by Grammy winners David Foster, Carole Bayer Sager and Babyface. Within just a few months, he had placed in the finals or semi-finals of NINE competitive opportunities including "BEST ROCK KEYBOARDIST" and "BEST AAA SINGER/SONGWRITER." In May 2003, Matthew was featured on MTV "Duets", making the final four (out of over 500 singer-keyboardists nationwide) to find a duet partner for Vanessa Carlton. During the show, he performed his own song "Close", making him one of the rare unsigned artists ever to get exposure on MTV. In December 2003, Matthew was cast as a young pianist in the Five For Fighting video "100 Years," the main role besides that of lead singer, John Ondrasik. In heavy rotation on VH1 and MTV, the video has increased Matt's fanbase exponentially, as many have tracked him down via his website, written fan letters and come to his jam-packed shows at the Hotel Cafe and other LA venues. His role models have broadened over the years, but his mission is still the same: to combine classic songwriting with totally modern grooves and rhythms, all wrapped up in insightful lyrics... with just a little banging on the keys thrown in for good measure.

Incredibly moving. You can't help but listen to it, and just stop and enjoy the entire CD as your brain pretty much runs away for a little while.

  • A soul searching shared

I recently received “Book of Days” as a gift from a friend. I’d bought “Horizon” previously, and so it was a new experience for me to listen to an indie artist’s debut album after first listening to their sophomore release. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Happily, I can only say that “Book of Days” is a very impressive first effort from Matthew Jordan. It’s a musical synopsis of the whirlwind of emotion and angst that encompass the teen years and ascent into adulthood. Each song is representative of a feeling or experience that for this listener, brought back personal memories that I could relate to the lyrics of the songs without much effort, because they’re so universal. The lyrics speak volumes to capturing the frustration (the driving “Anxiety”) and passion (softly sweet “Mulhulland Drive”) of a time when hormones are working overtime. While the production skills have noticeably improved from the first album to the second, it is definitely a testament to the immense songwriting and performance talent that Matt possesses. It’s a pleasure to be a visitor through listening as Matt progresses in his musicianship…I only wish I could have seen him play some of these songs live, but I’m content knowing I have them on CD, and can listen to them whenever I want, wherever I am. In my opinion, the songs on each of Matt’s two currently released CD’s cover such a range of musical stylings that you’ll be missing out if you don’t own both!

  • Great Music

This EP really shows how Matthew is making great music. You can see that he has some influences we all know of like Billy Joel and Ben Folds but you can also tell he is putting his own style into it. The piano-rock sound is really coming out. This is way more than a disc with songs put on it. Book of Days is meoldy, rhythm, sound, style, ect. The lyrics are absolute amazing and that shows just how much of a good song-writer he is. He is really going to go far with his music and this EP is the start of it. This EP falls nothing short of amazing.

  • Great Debut

Book of Days is an excellent first effort from a musician who is sure to go places. The songs are varied and the piano emphasis is refreshing and unique. My only complaint (if you can call it that) is that there were only 7 songs!

  • Definitely a rising star

This cd is very good and I only want to hear more. The songs are very good and vary. They dont all sound alike, which is a problem many artists fall into. His voice is very strong yet gentle when needed, and excellent musical arrangements.I love the piano blended in the songs. My favorite cuts are Insomniac and Mulholland Drive. Can't wait for the next release from Matthew

  • Matt Jordan is one class-act

Matthew Jordan's debut EP Book of Days is nothing short of a brilliant album, blending the soft, melodic piano tunes with a pop-rock flair. The lyrics in the songs are brilliant, and do a wonderful job conveying their meaning. Matt is amazingly talented, and will be the person to look out for, in the very near future.

  • cd worth buying
    author: Christina Sees

There is a lot of talent behind Book of Days. Original is a good word to describe it. The songs each hold their own vibe. The lyrics are really good. The piano is just awesome. Matthew Jordan has a nice "rock star" voice. Book of Days is different from anything you've ever heard. I wouldn't say it's the best CD out there (hence the 4 stars), but it's definitely one worth buying.

  • A great cd! Buy it - you won't be sorry

I bought this cd after seeing Matthew Jordan perform at The Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, and have played it literally hundreds of times. The songs BLINK and SOMETHING ELSE sound like sure-fire radio hits to me, and my other favorite INSOMNIAC, is a really beautiful song about the attempted suicide of one of his friends. Matthew's voice is a lot like Jason Mraz's with a little more rock edge and his melodies are often insanely catchy. Considering he's only 21 years old, it's pretty obvious that he's got the potential to really make it big.

I first heard Matthew Jordan over a year ago, when I was lucky enough to catch one of his live shows. After I found out he had released a CD, I knew I had to get it. And he does not disappoint. He combines catchy melodies with well-written lyrics and completes the package with a passion that can't be denied. The result is power pop at its finest! Buy this CD, and keep your eye on this guy... he will go far.

  • This kid is the real deal!
    author: Weston Gardner

Matthew Jordan's new EP is the product of years of refining his style and frankly working his butt off, and it shows. Each song brings a whole new feel and depth to the CD, you can be rocking out one minute and then feeling your heart break the next. His songwritting is infused with catchy and clever hooks that you can't stop singing. His voice is wonderfully unique and no one can touch his in-your-face piano style. He is on his way to the top and this CD is a tribute to it.

Matthew Jordan is simply awesome! and simply is an understatement. His lyrics are powerful and the listener can easily connect to them. The piano playing is the best I have heard in a long time. His style will past the test of time. Nothing can be compared to him, and I doubt anything ever will.

  • WOW! Refreshingly Intelligent & Melodic Piano-Driven Pop
    author: Steven Stewart

Matthew Jordan's BOOK OF DAYS is a revelation. The songs have an urgency and passion in the lyrics and delivery that elevates the material far above the majority of what passes for hits on today's radio. You don't just listen to the emotions... you are almost forced to vicariously live the struggle, loss, anger and hope found in the music. And the songs and melodies are so catchy, you find yourself humming them long after the songs stop. There is a tanglible feeling that you are experiencing something new and exciting...similar to way I felt when I first heart Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes. Matthew's music easily goes toe to toe with the classic piano-driven pop of stars Billy Joel, Elton John, Tori Amos, Ben Folds and Five For Fighting. But there's also an originality in Jordan that shows he isnt just following in the footsteps of the past, but he is also forging ahead with his own style and sound. But words can't do justice to the experience of hearing the album. Click on the link to hear the haunting piano and ache in the vocals of BLINK. This is probably my favourite song from the album, as the lyrics cut deeper than you would expect and stay with you after hearing the song. For those who miss the angry young man years of Billy Joel, check out the hard hit of ANXIETY. Twist a bit to the left for the smooth and super sexy groove of the exquisite SO DEEP. Get lost in the mini-movie storytelling of MULHOLLAND DRIVE. Breathe in the trial-by-fire loss of innocence and survival of STAY COOL. Crank down the top of your convertable (or at least open the windows of your car) and crank up SOMETHING ELSE to blast some summer energy. And get a little spooky with the edgy subtlety of INSOMNIAC. BOOK OF DAYS is an unmissable slice of melodic piano-driven pop. Smart and singable. If this is just the promise of this artists potential in an EP, I am first in line to grab whatever Jordan records in the future. He's that good. • Electric, charismatic, and totally marketable!
    author: Lilian Lemer

Book of Days is the type of CD that should be sitting on the Billboard charts. Matthew is the whole package. Smouldering looks, raw and precise vocals, and songs that are radio friendly. There is a void in the Industry that Matthew Jordan could easily fill. A modern day Billy Joel, with echos of Ben Folds. This talented young man is not only a masterful vocalist, but an amazing musician. His songwriting skills round out the package that should propel him to stardom. It's just a matter of time. I highly recommend this CD, and if you get a chance to witness this young talent performing live, you should grab it. He sets the stage alive with his energy.

  • Book of Days is vibrant, melodic, and attention-getting.
    author: Nobuyuki Sakamoto

As the first few seconds play, you know you've found something different--something alive. It's always vibrant, even moody. The rhythms go from simply smooth to frenetic but smooth. The arrangements are balanced but not formulaic. The one thing that really grabs my attention is the singing. There is always an emotional edge there--a fire--that you rarely hear anywhere else. You can hear more than that in each song. There is a cleverness in the writing that doesn't trip over itself. Mulholland Drive is almost relaxed in contrast to the rest of the tracks but still has emotion all over it. Anxiety is quite the opposite with a stridency that makes it appropriately moody. The influences on all the tracks are apparent. A couple of times, I caught myself thinking of Jackson Browne's album "Hold Out" because of the straightforward piano and vocal goodness with brilliant arrangement holding it all together. Looking for something that isn't the same old thing? Book of Days is that CD.
