notes

Recorded in October 2006 and released on American Sketch Records in February 2007, LIVE FROM FORT COLLINS--the latest release from MICHAEL YOUNG and the follow-up to his debut I LISTEN TO MY FEET--is an hour long, unedited live in-studio radio performance originally broadcast on KRFC 88.9 FM in Fort Collins, CO. The intimacy and simplicity of the recording emerges as Michael and host Philip Coggon chat--unscripted--and enjoy the nine (9) tunes interspersed with interview over the course of the hour. LIVE FROM FORT COLLINS not only reveals Michael’s rhythmic, bouncy, and melodic playing, but also reveals a candid look at Michael on a personal level.

MICHAEL YOUNG is a fingerstyle guitarist who plays both the six and twelve string guitar with driving rhythm and groove, and he carries that bouncy and energetic groove from powerful and compelling compositions to soulful ballads. Moving from daunting and alarming to lighthearted and idiosyncratic instrumentals, Michael takes advantage of the guitar's possibilities by combining standard and alternate tunings with a mix of slide guitar into his playing.

"Michael launches from conventional fingerstyle picking into energetic territories fueled by dynamic grooves." John Noyd, Maximum Ink

"Michael's dexterity, depth and tone will fool you into thinking you're hearing an entire string section instead of just one dude with a 12 string. He channels real emotion and range in his songs, evoking dozens of moods and sounds out of his instrument." Jeff Reeves, Arizona Daily Sun

"In between slightly sardonic wit, Young wowed the audience with finger-picking poignancy, pregnant with depth and grace." Djuna Lardner, Kearney (NJ) Observer

"He crafts evocative pieces that take listeners on flights of fancy as well as gritty trips." Jim Beal, San Antonio Express News

"Michael's performance took the chill outof the air and warmed us up enough to set the Doom's Day Clock ahead 12 years. He was fantastic! A wonderful wit and very engaging stories that had our audience totally captivated."
Mary Palmer, High Plains Public Radio Music Director

  • . . .will take you on a journey from the light-hearted to the underworld of angs
author: Celeste Regal, The Observer (New Jersey)

When Michael Young stopped off in New Jersey at the Hillside Café in Nutley last winter, his guitar work was impressive and he had a fascinating stage presence. Now the 24-four-year old has just put out a new album this month called “Live from Fort Collins.” The new album has a different feel from the previous one, “I Listen To My Feet.” The songs have matured to a deeper emotional range and expansive meaning. The intertwined chord work will take you on a journey from the light-hearted to the underworld of angst. My personal favorite, “No Smiling,” is almost symphonic in its frightening sound. You can imagine an epic movie on life and the difficulties of living to go with it. “Caboose” is sweet, fun, toe-tapping stuff. “Carousel” brings out the gypsy in me with its wide tones and sparkling sensibility.
