notes
Michael Kahn has lived multiple lives: from an upbringing in the suburbs of New York City, to college in upstate New York, to Israel where he worked in high tech and served for 10 years in the Israeli army, and finally to northern California, where he currently works as an RN.
His music is tough, unapologetic, and authentic, from his no-holds-barred analysis of young starlets (You're A Star) to his anatomy of a needy relationship (Not Me). He is an accomplished acoustic guitar player with a style that fuses rock, bluegrass, and folk. The CD features four of his own instrumental compositions.
His lyrics are reminiscent of Bob Dylan, while his hard-driving guitar playing brings Stephen Stills to mind. This is a rough-and-ready, uncut, unedited set of songs, to be appreciated by those who enjoy something original, authentic, and off the beaten track.

Raw intensity
author: Brian Bourgoin -- DJ at WCNIAll I can say a DAMN, rarely has a CD caught my attention after the first listen like yours. I will be giving this one a good workout on the airwaves. There is a lot of great material for airtime. It sounds like "punk-folk" and I mean that in a good way, mainly in the raw intensity which pours out of the music. This CD will be getting airtime here at WCNI for a while, it is releases like this which makes it enjoyable to be a DJ promoting independent music for a freeform radio station.
it is refreshing to hear music without pretension
author: Steve CroyIn this age of commercialism where it seems most artists strive to produce the next MTV video, it is refreshing to hear music without pretension. Unadorned, sometimes sparse, but always with a note of honesty, Michael’s songs are appealing because he shares something of himself with the listener. No one is going to mistake Michael’s vocals for Luciano Pavarotti. But in a style reminiscent of early Bob Dylan, his voice fits the music, lyrically, as well as providing the appropriate counterpoint to the acoustic guitar. Blackwater Canyon is off the beaten path, stylistically, intellectually and emotionally—it isn’t for everyone. But, if you want glitz, mirror-polished production and vacuous content, there’s always MTV.
