notes

Singer/songwriter Michael K hails from Pennsylvania, but it's the Chesapeake Bay area where he now resides, and what most informs his work. The brick roadways of Annapolis, the city streets of Baltimore, and the waters of the Bay itself imbue his songs with a sense of warmth without sacrificing verve.

Michael K. is at the forefront of a burgeoning Annapolis music scene where an eclectic mix of the Delta blues, rockabilly, alternative and art rock serves as an interesting backdrop to Michael K.'s earnest, unambiguous approach. His music, Michael K. says, "draws on my personal experiences as well as idealistic fantasies of that 'perfect love.'"

Produced and arranged by guitar virtuoso Todd Kreuzburg, his debut record, "Heart Shaped Songs" is bound together by simple, straightforward melodies, modern instrumentation, and top-notch production. On the album, Michael K channels all the bands he grew up (Crowded House, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Matthew Sweet) as well as his like-minded peers (Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Adam Duritz). He takes everything they love about rock, and everything they know about pop, and plays it his way. Not afraid to fall in love, to show his bruises, to make people dance, or most importantly to lend his own unique voice, Michael K has made a made a bittersweet record that still has the ability to flat-out rock.

The word is getting out. His song "Waterview Avenue" has topped Internet Radio stations. Several "Heart Shaped" tracks have been licensed for Network TV. And his live performances are winning him fans throughout the area. You can catch Michael K. wrapping his intelligent lyrics around infectious melodies anywhere in Maryland where an audience appreciates power pop of the first order.

  • Love the CD!

Love the CD! Can't wait for the next one...(hint, hint)

  • A CD that appeals to both sexes
    author: Jim Rogers

This CD has a variety of tunes that makes it appealing to both men and women. Although I prefer the high energy songs like "Bigger, Better" my wife likes the mellow sounds of songs like "Romeo Lives Again." Great mood music!

  • Good Stuff!
    author: Darius Lucina

I happened upon this guy and his music purely by accident. I'm a real stickler for lyrics and melody, but even the songs that I didn't like off this CD found themselves stuck in my head. Mike's got a gift for infectious hooks and identifiable lyrics. I'd like to see this guy playing live. See if he can live up to the legend he's already starting with this debut CD. Regardless, I'm hooked. I'd suggest you get this CD... and just try to put it down after listening to it once.

  • Just One Old Parrotthead's Opinion
    author: Paul Lux

Living on the water's edge in sunny Florida, Mike's Heart Shaped Songs make the perfect counterpoint to a relaxing evening surfside. All of the tunes are catchy, and you find yourself singing along well before the song is over. All of my friends who hear it want to know who it is and where I found it. There's a little of something for eveyone in this album. It's as simple as that!

  • Acoustic driven and well honed music!
    author: Laurin Wollen, Music Monthly

Michael K. and his Heart Shaped Songs are acoustic driven well honed examples of sweetly sung boat music. You just want to sit back under the sun and forget your ills and let the music carry ya way on back. Another keeper in my mind...
