Traditional Jazz Vocalist in the tradition of Mel Torme

notes

Michael's new cd is for you and everyone who loves good Jazz. Michael Camacho is not new to the music world. It wasn't long ago he did an international million seller but today Michael is doing what he loves best....singing jazz standards from the Great American Songbook and writing what may become new standards in the future.

Of the twelve selections in the CD , Mr. Camacho wrote five of them including the title and he gives new life to songs written by Johnny Mercer, Sammy Cahn, Hoagy Carmichael, Lennon and McCartney, just to name a few.

This record by Michael is one of the most relaxing and at the same time compelling vocal work in the traditional Jazz context. His choice of side men are all top first call New York players whom I'm well familiar with. To hear Michael live is also a delightful experience as he always approaches material with a fresh and spontaneous interpretation. His sense of melody and rythmn put him at the top of the list of vocalists on the scene today competing for the listeners ear. We'll all be hearing much more from this most personable of male jazz vocalists.

  • Good voice, so-so effort
author: John Book, Music For America

I'm not a big fan of vocal jazz, there are people whose voices I do enjoy, but a lot of times I would prefer to just shut off the voice and let the music carry me. Michael Camacho is someone who has a good voice, but isn't someone I would want to hear on a regular basis. Just For You (New Found) was originally released last year, but has been reissued with a new cover, and anyone who loves that smooth Tony Bennett style and finesse will get into Camacho. Again, he has a good voice but that's just it. It's good, but he doesn't really go any further than keeping in key, making the moves and adding any more jazz pizazz. All of the songs are quite good, but being a Beatles nut I hated what he did to "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)", to me it was one step above corny. I truly do understand a need for new interpretations, and I would have liked it if it was done decently, but this one was just not right for me. His version of "Spanish Harlem", however, is nice. What I also did not like was the reverb treatment on his voice, which did not compliment how well the music sounded. For his style, I would have preferred to hear much less reverb, and perhaps at times have it feel as if he was crawling out of your speaker. He is good at what he does, and while his style may not be for me, with a few more tweaks his music could be a hell of a lot more stronger.

  • One of my favorite male jazz vocalists!
    author: Shea Breaux Wells

Truly one of the best male jazz vocalists around... Mr. Camacho's voice is warm and agile. He is a "singer's singer", and his approach to well-loved songs such as Skylark and Norwegian Wood are incredibly fresh. He will most assuredly become one of your favorites, too. Get this CD!
