"Melissa Greener is a smart young songwriter with vocal and guitar chops that make you go 'Whoa.' The music is a down-to-earth, hookey, groove based variation on poppy acoustic folk. Her lyrical imagery is unmistakeable. Her melodies unforgetable."

notes

Growing up in the mid-west under the wing of a professional vocalist for a mother, Melissa Greener began her musical journey early. She got her first guitar at age nine and would later look to poets like Dylan Thomas and W.B Yeats for the music of words.

Greener began playing out as early as age 15, and now a near lifetime of musical confidence pours out of her soulful voice.

Between her birth town of Detroit and new home of Austin, Texas, Greener has lived and performed in Tel Aviv, Montreal, Halifax, and the Jianxi Providence of China. While marked with experiences of her solo bicycle ride across Canada and various travels throughout Europe, it's American cities like San Francisco and Nashville that make their way into her music in the form of American Folk and Country. Still, Greener's globally attuned voice expresses universal notions of love, departure, regret and hope. As she travels through memories she also travels through melodies. She moves beyond the basics of Americana to capture the essence of American pop with influences like contemporary songstresses Shawn Colvin, Lucinda Williams and Ani Difranco, as well as such greats as Simon & Garfunkel, Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell.

Greener's style is one of poetic lyricism matched with honeyed melodies and down-to-earth delivery. Her debut CD, produced by Darwin Smith, captures the essence of this, featuring some of Austin's finest musicians including John Greene (Patty Griffin) on drums and percussion, Steve Bernal (Abra Moore) on bass and cello, and an appearance by Kim Deschamps (Cowboy Junkies) on pedal steel.

"The driver's seat my personal throne / All I do is drive, and chew on life", she sings on Fancy Free*. Greener's songs are meant for movement, whether through the terrain of lost memories or across the American landscape. Her music translates both the longing and anticipation that comes with the prolonged travel she knows so well.

  • beautiful debut...

I have heard of Melissa through MySpace for a while now (4 of her songs are on it). She finally played live at Banjo Jim's (an awesome venue) in NYC, where I picked up this cd of hers. I totally love it!!! Her guitar playing/skills are amazing and her vocals are beautiful. I also enjoy her lyrical sensibility. And my favorite song off of this cd is "Fancy Free" (though I enjoy them all)!!! And most definitely I highly recommend picking up this cd.

  • There is something to be said about orginality that sneaks up on you..
author: Del Vezeau - The Canadian Guitar Festival

Melissa Greener has a great voice; to be sure, but her song craft is what I found to be most striking. Hers is the kind that grows on you upon the 2nd listen; there are moments when I hear an artist being an artist and there are moments when I hear an artist doubling as a producer, Greener is an artist on a well produced record.

  • This is a MUST LISTEN CD!!

Melissa's lyrics are poignant and well crafted, and she is an accomplished guitar player as well. The Long Road Down is one of my favorites. This CD should be in your player!! Watch out for this rising star.
