notes

MADELINE FRANK, viola, violin, received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from the Juilliard School as a scholarship student of William Lincer, former principal violist of the N.Y. Philharmonic. She has given solo recitals throughout the United States ,The Republic of China, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, South America, Canada, Bermuda, throughout Europe, and at the prestigious Purcell Room at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Her education has included scholarships at the Juilliard School, Indiana University, and the University of Cincinnati and has a Violin Performance Diploma from the North Carolina School of the Arts.

She has been principal violist of the New York City Opera and has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet Orchestra for the Bolshoi, Kirov, Royal Ballet, Netherlands Dance Theatre and other major international companies. She has been a guest artist on New York City radio stations WQXR, WKCR, WNYC.

She has performed at the Budapest Festival and throughout Europe as a chamber music performer. She has written the following books on music: The Secret of Teaching Science & Math Through Music and Musical Notes On Math (teaching math to children in K-5 fractions and decimals through the rhythm of music).
"Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata and Brahm's Second Sonata in E flat were both pleasingly done, the latter coming across with the right kind of relaxed warmth. A particular feature of Ms. Frank's playing is the feathery, rather tremulous sound she can draw from the C string - most attractive."
- THE LONDON TIMES

"Panache displayed in lively performance for solo viola. Faure's song-like Elegy divided between the performers the resonant strands of melody. Frank executed the double stopping with panache. The Impromptu (Ernst Toch) fulfills the viola's capacity for passionate expression."
- CANBERRA TIMES, AUSTRALIA

"Miss Frank has a sweet tone and plays confidently. Madeline Frank's mastery was admirable in Impromptu by E. Toch.."
- NORTH SHORE TIMES, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Ms. Frank played with self confidence and a firm touch. She produced rich warm sounds and infused her music with energy.....she caressed the strings with a steady bow...."
- THE TIMES HERALD

"Ms. Frank, an accomplished player, produced a full, warm tone from this rich-sounding instrument....The Brahms was perhaps the loveliest of all. She obviously felt passionate about this piece, and her playing revealed a depth and sense for phrasing that brought out the work's romantic richness....Ms. Frank gave the opening movement (Schubert) lots of life, catching the flavor of the folk melodies that give this piece its charm."

My husband and I enjoyed it very much. Listening to it makes you feel good.

  • Such a rich tone...such a nice feel
author: Dennis Marcellino, saxophonist, former member of : The Tokens (t

The passion in the strength and richness of Madeline Frank's tone and vibrato have the ability to make your heart strings vibrate right along with her viola strings. That was my experience the first time that I heard her music. She shows what a great instrument the viola is...with the beauty of a violin in its upper range and in its lower range it has the richness of a cello's upper range. A nice combination, and Madeline plays both ends masterfully. This CD is also a nice blend of familiar and new (for me at least) melodies. I highly recommend it for a nice, and even romantic, classical feel.

  • Bravo! Well done! Brilliant!

In Madeline Frank's other CD entitled, "Madeline Frank - In Performance," which was recorded live, it's no surprise that she receives long thunderous applause from audiences enjoying her brilliant performances. This marvelous repertoire of heartfelt classical music (my favorite being "Saint-Saens - The Swan"), is brought to life and given wings by this brilliant violist who conveys vigor, passion and spirit throughout every piece on this exceptional CD. "Madeline Frank - In Performance" is truly a treasure!

  • Magnificent, Marvelous, Moving-Music to Inspire!

Bravo!! "Madeline's Midnight Melodies" by Madeline Frank is superb! Her rendition of "Saint-Saens - The Swan" actually brought a tear to my eye! The music on this CD is perfect for sharing a tender, romantic evening at home with your beloved. PLUS, I've found that the relaxed warmth and pure, sweet tones exuding from Madeline Frank's viola helps inspire me while I write. "Madeline's Midnight Melodies" has become one of my favorite CD's!

  • Comfort food !! A true delight !
    author: James Nicholas, cellist

I put on the CD and just curled up and listened to it. It was great comfort food!! The sultry, throaty sound of the viola is especially suited to the Spanish pieces-smoldering! A true delight. Thanks again for the delightful CD!

  • A very peaceful and soothing string of music - a true delight!
    author: Jeff Osborne

The CD was very well done. The sound is beautiful and the technique displayed is the best I have heard from a solo violist.
