Quote: "If you can picture Moby hanging out with Prodigy, and now and again letting Mylo take the reins, you wouldn't be too far off. Maybe even add just a little dash of Japanese techno, for good measure."
By Danny Brown
If you grew up as a teenager in the United Kingdom in the 90s, it's more than likely that one of the genres you may have listened to was dance music. Whether that was via hardcore dance such as house or industrial, or more laid-back fare such as trance, it offered an escape from bands such as Oasis and Blur. Swirling sounds, trippy atmospherics and often-haphazard arrangements, it was one of the genres with which both artists and listeners could really experiment.
Hailing from Santa Fe, Metaverse is the brainchild of indie artist and composer Zeph E. Daniel. Taking its name from the Neal Stephenson novel Snow Crash, Metaverse is a descriptive term for the 3D virtual worlds found in places like Second Life and World of Warcraft, where you use avatars to represent yourself. It's kind of apt for the music of Daniel, since Meta V is as spacious and unpredictable as these virtual worlds' can be.
The music of Metaverse has been described as ambient, techno and world music, all jammed together with cryptic vocals and lyrics. If you can picture Moby hanging out with Prodigy, and now and again letting Mylo take the reins, you wouldn't be too far off. Maybe even add just a little dash of Japanese techno, for good measure.
Opening track "Buss Reid" sets the tone, with its almost science fiction-like soundtrack, with swishy keyboards trading with an argumentative bass line that's never quite allowed to run its own course. If you ever wanted a soundtrack to a lucid dream, then this is exactly the kind of track you'd envisage.
This merges into "Trash Religion," which opens up with distorted keyboards and guitars, before the most hypnotizing bass you've ever heard joins forces with drums to transport you to some underground rave, where garage and happy hardcore are the in-house currency.
"But You're Not There," which at eight minutes long is the longest track on the CD, is a more transient affair, and brings to mind early Echoboy, before he found guitar and went all indie rock on us. A staccato drum track plays behind spoken word vocals, with an Indian chanteuse in the background offering an Eastern feel to the composition.
It's a brave soul that brings out a dance concept album, which is what Meta V essentially is. With titles such as "Journey Across The Forbidden," with its 70s feel sci-fi leanings (apart from the ever-present heavy bass lines), and "Before The Machine," which is the perfect soundtrack to that morning after comedown, there's a definite linkage between all the songs on offer her.
Whether today's dance fans, or even those looking for something a little bit different than all the emo kid bands, will take to Zeph E. Daniel and his Metaverse project is open to debate. It can sometimes be a little too trippy, even for the most dedicated mushroom heads. However, there's no denying that it's an accomplished piece of work, and one that shows there's still people willing to experiment, and that should always be encouraged.

Outstanding CD
author: RikToday, Fathers Day, June 17th, I took the time to listen to MetaV from start to finish at least three times. This CD is outstanding. I consider it a concept CD. It contains a musical theme interwoven with a fusion of electronic/trance/middle eastern/celtic/tribal influences. Every single track is solid. Tracks 9,10,11 absolutely crush it. Tracks 12 & 13 do a great job of bringing resolution to the musical foundation established at the start of the CD. The music energized and refreshed me physically and spiritually.
A great listening experience and it cures headaches, too.
author: NinaDriving down the highway listening to AM radio, got a headache, switched to Meta V and voila! Headache gone. Different images pop into my consciousness every time I listen; Bedouins in dark, woolen robes, Mad Max as a Jesus freak, a Grecian urn... There's a lot of depth to this music. It's complex, multi-faceted and definitely enjoyable.
Loving, Caring, Unique Moods, Miami Vice, Original Refreshing
author: Audun Forgard aka Riddemspider AudioThis is an awesome cd, after istening to it a couple of times it really falls into place. being used to d/l songs and shows from the artists website (zephnet.com) I was anticipating something more of those abrasive breakz tunes he puts on there (PS: Check 2Blud & Prima Dona Wana Be for ace tuneage for any dancefloor ready to slam booty!) Not much like that on the album, excep for "Massive Head" That really ought to have been the intro tune on the new Miami Vice film, it really updates Jan Hammers original score eautifully, and at the same time also lets loose some pretty wild "trance" type riffs arpeggios... Great stuff. This is an album I want to give away to my friends really. Looking forward to next album and good luck from Norway
Growth is coming
author: TyroneGreat start and I believe more clarity with new equipment will bring it to a new level. When you mix, make sure that your vocals are a little louder than they are. It is hard hearing you at times, but I really enjoyed it. In Him
awsome spiritual journey
author: mary crockettIt is not what I would call background noise. It takes you on a journey with a dramatic conclusion which is also a beginning.
Intense, interesting, and moving.
author: Daniel R. MitchellThere are those who want the safe, the ordinary, the imitative -- it makes them feel safe. I'm not one of those types. The incessant, repetitive formulas of commercial music bore me to the point I can barely listen to thirty seconds of what is passed off on the consumers as "music" these days. Hear one pop song you've heard them all. I need more, much more than just the comfortable conformity of the processed and pasteurized pop sound. I need something intense, and complex, that both fascinates and moves me in some way. If you're like me, you will love this music. Here is something I can listen to for more than a few seconds without getting bored. I like that. This music is engaging, and requires you to engage rather than just be a passive sponge. I like that, too. Synthesized sounds are often interesting in and of themselves, and much electronic music tries to rely solely on the interest of the bleeps-and-bloops and technical wizardry alone. But in Meta V the synthesized sounds are blended and balanced well with complex, driving drum patterns, bass/lead lines and intense vocalizations, while still taking you through a fantastic journey across an interesting sound-scape. This is not your typical dance music or silly love songs, thank God.
A transition for the brain stimulating
author: MicheleA transition for the brain stimulating to say the least. the flow of sound brings visual concepts that is exhilarating.

This album breaks the mind control and frees

The composer is a genius!
author: Raymond van RossemZeph E. Daniel is a prophet after the fashion of the biblical Ezechiel, and in that capacity the author of two books, and the host of Channel Z, a radio show and podcast that is dedicated to exposing the dark secrets of society. "The notion I have about flowery Jesus music is that this is what the satanists wish to produce." states the composer on his website. He describes his first official album as a musical journey that concludes with the message that "the Lamb is God." And explaining the the title of his album: "The MetaVerse is the REAL reality, while this world is the illusory one. If you can understand that much, then you can walk freely, because Jesus paid the price for you. You don't owe anyone anything." This CD offers a lot of intricate percussion, exciting rhythms, exotic tunes, and powerful electronic sounds. If you like unconventional music, then you won't regret having bought this CD. If you like this CD, then you should make an effort to get Zeph Daniels other albums: "The End Of Mind Kontrol" and "Butterfly" to enjoy even more daring music.
A fruitful musical compilation.........to be reckoned with....
author: ~Laurie~I am currently listening to this CD...so far, my ultimate favorite song on this CD is "Transdimensional Dissent"....various parts of it remind me of the recordings I have heard of dolphins....amazing. The song entitled: The Opening of the Seals has a Middle Eastern music flavor of its own....which I always like. Zeph's use of the keyboards and synthesizor always amaze me......if you like jazz, funk, techno, Middle Eastern music or synthesizer's in general, you will like this CD....!!!!! The vocals are awsome, too....... Keep the music coming...!!! ~Laurie~
This was a new and intriguing experience for me
author: CornerStoneThis was a new and intriguing experience for me since I am past the age of the New Sounds. I gave it a 4 star and I will reserve the 5 star for the next album I do hope you give the sounds and thought time to take root. Then you too will be pleasantly supprised.

This is a very unusual and refreshing compilation. Kudos to the producer.
author: GullMeta V is a unique and refreshing compilation of tunes that really does take one on a journey. It is mostly ambient and electronic composititions but when the vocal tracks are combined on several of the songs the listener is definitely ready for the voice and lyric. Very memorable, love listening to it while I'm driving.
