notes

“Lovers and Stars” is destined to be a radio hit. It has a rock rhythm and a sweet melody. Toes always tap on this one, and it’s appeal is universal.
Melissa Ivey writes unforgettable lyrics, and music that stays with you forever. She is barely 22 years old, barely 5 feet tall, and a very petite size 0, but she is an enormous talent. She can write music and lyrics period. Songs you won’t forget, and want to hear again and again. And she can sing. She can belt, she can be sweet, and she can be a rock queen.
The most successful artists got acclaim when they were young, and knew early on they wanted a career in music. Melissa Ivey knew what she wanted to be when she was 9 years old, and could command audiences at clubs when she was 15. Of all the young rock artists today, Melissa Ivey is clearly one of those destined for stardom.

Melissa and the boys are being played as far as the back woods of Montana. Melissa Ivey & The Gentlemen are the greastest thing going in years. This is music at its finest. It has everything I like ranging from pop, punk, and everything in between. They are going to be big!

This spitfire of a songstress was recently lauded for her craft in songwriting, winning Westword’s Showcase 2005 in the singer/songwriter category. She discusses the prospects of her industry future like an aged veteran, and in some respects at the age of 23 she is. Ivey earned her education through the music industry itself. Early on she realized that there is the business of music and the music business and at times they are mutually exclusive. There’s never a ‘for sure’ thing in this business unless you’re for sure doing it for yourself.” For her latest disc (untitled at press time) she has cleverly created “themed” release parties which highlight songs from her latest disc. At her April 22 “fantasy/romance” themed show at the D-Note in Arvada, Ivey will highlight her performance with the release of the single “Lovers and Stars.” Ivey was contacted by some of the industry’s most talented songwriters for her most recent project, most notably Christopher Jak and The Knack’s Burton Averre, who co-wrote and co-produced some of the tracks. Eager to work with Ivey, Averre helped her hone her skills, toning songs down to minimalistic simplicity. “Burton Averre of the Knack is one those old school guys who says ‘This is what makes it a good song,’” Ivey said. “He taught me what to do and what not to do. And what rules I can break. And now, every time I write a song. I go back and ask myself: ‘What would Burton do? What would he say? How would he analyze this?’ He helped me by setting up the rules to songwriting.” “Music is everything I thought it would be, but cooler,” said Ivey. “I always thought it would be this cool and it is. So I appreciate that.”

  • I can actually afford to make music my full time job and still eat and pay bills

Many female singer/songwriters keep their music acoustic. When I first saw you play, many years ago, you pulled out a super-hot, green Fender and did some songs with that. What is it about both approaches (acoustic/electric) that satisfies you as a singer/songwriter? Melissa:That was my Fender "Venus" back in the day. I love to break out of the norm so being the winner of (Denver's) Westword's " Best Singer/Songwriter" and using something other than an acoustic guitar is always empowering. I currently have a new Epiphone hallow body guitar that people who come to the shows will be seeing a lot more of. I played my acoustic/electric ovation for over seven years now and have just beat the life out of her. She may have to retire soon. But I'm waiting for someone to custom make me a new acoustic to beat on for the next 10 or so. I love the different tones and attitude a guitar can give a song. My playing and writing is like the guide map for my band to write their parts so I have to be a little bit more direct in what I want as a song writer and band leader. Being as well-traveled as you are, why do you choose Denver as a home base? Wouldn't it serve you better to relocate? Melissa: I can actually afford to make music my full time job and still eat and pay bills and travel around the country. I never wanted to move to New York and become a waiter and keep waiting for the dream to happen while barely scrapping by. In Denver I am making my success a reality and love the city ,the community, the music scene, and the great weather. A wise man once told me "it's not about the location anyway. It's what you do with what you have." Not that I noticed, but you are indeed very, very sexy. Does "sexy" help sell you and your music? Melissa: It sucks that what you look like has anything to do with music these days, but it does, unfortunately. I like talent over appearance any day. I think we would have better music on the charts with out MTV and VH1. I mean Brittany Spears is as deep as a mud puddle but she's sexy, so she sells records and the talented less attractive people are starving for their art. People with the greatest voices and great songs are not what this industry is about any more in a sad way. I suppose i could get by lip syncing someone else's song but I couldn't live that way- with no integrity and no craft of song. I'm starting to realize that you are only as good as your songs. That's why i'm releasing my new E.P. one song at a time. Like back in the 50's and 60's, plus it's a great excuse to throw a party every other month.

  • Ivey has made an EP that could take her onto the next level.

Sassy and polished pop/rock is what singer-songwriter Melissa Ivey presents on her latest EP, Lovers and Stars, the diversity of her material is interesting. Opening with the radio-friendly title track, Ivey progresses to the soulful "Eye on the Door" and the frenetic "Far Far Away", and ends the EP with the acoustic "No Ties To Break". The best of the lot is the excellent "Everywhere and Nowhere", and the strength of her material plus the contributions of noted mixer Jeff Juliano and songwriters Chris Jak and Burton Avere mean that Ivey has made an EP that could take her onto the next level. Having already worked her tail off trying to ‘make it’ in the industry, Melissa Ivey can move past those late nights of burning CDs, lousy open mikes, and opening up for some no-name local act in some no-name town. Her music is firmly pressed into golden radio-friendly pop-rock with a singer/songwriter format well in hand. Distinctly familiar vocals coax out harmonies that are often out of the range of lesser vocalists. Nicely written songs round out the complementary assets that this young and budding female artist has on tap. - J-Sin

Melissa Ivey is by no means a newcomer to the music world having released four independent albums prior to this new EP, "Lovers and Stars." Just because she has been around for a bit doesn't necessarily mean you have heard of her or heard her music. "Lovers and Stars" has drawn some comparisons to Sheryl Crow and Kt Tunstall and after hearing this 5 track offering I would tend to agree, more so with the Tunstall comparison. There is a bit of pop to these tracks, but for the most part it's kept on the down low and her voice is what helps carry these tunes. With a powerful, hush to her voice, Ivey is begging to be compared to Tunstall. This is a pretty solid EP and well worth a spin and for you collectors there is a bonus video for your PC's on here as well. Now is the perfect time for her to break out of the coffee shops and into your radios. I am excited to see what more Ivey has in store for us. (JK)
