notes

At age 22, Erin McKeown, proficient on bass, piano, electric and acoustic guitars as well as banjo and mandolin, has come a long way in the brief three years she's been plying her art.

A Virginia native and current resident of Providence, RI, McKeown is categorically elusive, a characteristic she attributes to her restless nature and penchant for musical adventure.

Self-financed and written and recorded on weekends over a period of 3 months in a farmhouse in Western Massachusetts, McKeown's sophomore release DISTILLATION boasts of vocals, drums and guitar sounds that were captured with a single tube microphone, in stairwells, kitchen cupboards, and bedrooms.

Erin has toured the country for the better part of three years, wooing audiences with her enthusiasm, charm and quick-witted honesty.

To date, her two cassette-only and CD re-issued releases have sold nearly 7,000 copies, all almost exclusively at gigs and over the internet.

As McKeown bops, strums, swings, rocks, and struts her way through pop, jazz, blues, and Tin Pan Alley, DISTILLATION might be the biggest surprise you hear this year.

This album isn't as good as her "Grand" CD, but anything with McKeown's mesmerizing voice is winner

  • Great intro to a new artist

On the strength of "Blackbirds", I bought the CD. On the strength of the CD, I visited the website. On the strength of the website, I bought concert tickets. I fully expect that I will buy more CDs based on the strength of Ms Mckeown's performance. A real find.

  • Feel good folky fun

Distillation has great mellow folk songs with great, soul-baring lyrics and quirky guitar. There are a couple great upbeat songs, like Queen of Quiet, and laid-back songs that will make you feel peaceful.

Seriously, these vocal arrangements will knock your socks off.

  • if you hate commercial drivel you'll love this CD!

The uptempo Queen of Quiet and Blackbirds hooked me! The rest of the CD is great too but a lot more mellow. It's jazzy, folksy, and heavy on guitar and lyrics. Well worth the 20 bucks. Impress your friends!

  • Fabulous--but better live.
    author: S. Lin

I'm not sure I would have bought the CD if I hadn't seen her live. But this has a great mix of songs that make me dance around and bop my head. Really good melodies and smart lyrics.
