notes

Ruth McGillivray is a truly stellar vocalist and rare talent. Audiences are mesmerized by the freedom and abandon of her performance; her wit and wisdom resonates with their own experience of life. Make no mistake, this woman has soul.

The courage and strength that characterizes her life is evident in the music she makes. Her collaborative work with accomplished guitarist, Sheldon Bradley, has produced an acclaimed CD and an impressive repertoire of original R&B, Blues and Gospel songs and arrangements.

Daughter of a preacher and performing/recording artists, Ruth grew up singing. In the early 1990's she began fronting R&B and blues cover bands at Vancouver-area pubs, clubs, festivals and special events. Ruth and band mate, Sheldon Bradley, discovered their mutual interest in songwriting and began a collaboration that is proving to be nothing short of magical. Ruth's fans are adamant that her talent and intensity should be shared with the world.

Renowned producer, Roy Salmond, heard Ruth and Sheldon's music and agreed. He produced their first CD, River of Soul, which features an all-star cast of musicians accompanying Ruth and Sheldon on 10 tracks of original blues and R&B tunes plus 2 gospel arrangements. The album was released in September 2003.

River of Soul was reviewed in October 2003 by music critic Marke Andrews of The Vancouver Sun. He gave it a 4-star rating and called it "an hour of full-bodied R&B in the spirit of early Bonnie Raitt."

  • A joy
    author: Angela Towle

If I were to be stranded anywhere ever, I'd want to be sure that this essential was at hand. Depth, wonder, articulate ... so many descriptives come to mind. Listening to this CD has all the resonance of turning to a compassionate, eloquent friend for sensitive, practical advice that gets you humming along. I am so looking forward to the next CD.

  • A power of unsettling enormity
    author: Kevin Gould

Immediately upon hearing this CD, you can sense the power in Ruth's voice. It's like the subdued churning of a big V8 at idle. As she gently finesses through delicate passages, your anticipation builds and soon enough patience is rewarded with the power, the fury, that is Ruth McGillivray. While the CD does not produce the sonic clarity and breathy dynamic that Ruth has in live performances, it is a fine showcase for some solid songwriting and brilliant interpretation. I rate this one a "must have".

  • A voice born to sing The Blues.
    author: RN

I have never run across a voice that has such an immediate and visceral impact. Rivetting. River of Soul? "I'm Leaving" is spine tingling. Literally. It stands up beside any blues performance by any singer of any era. "I Still Love You" is wonderfully intimate and gentle. "Cry" makes me. Ruth is a future blues legend.
