notes

Surf guitar guru, Mel Waldorf has brought together the seemingly unlikely pairing of traditional Jewish songs and instrumental surf guitar into a wonderfully funny and musically relevant CD entitled Meshugga Beach Party: Twenty Songs of The Chosen Surfers. Born and raised in the suburbs of New York City, Mel Waldorf grew up loving the foods and traditions of his Jewish heritage as well as rock and roll music, and surf music in particular. Waldorf explains, "Growing up in Suffern, New York, there was no surf scene - no beach, no waves, and no surficilicious babes - but it was a fantasy more than a few of us shared." By the time he was 14, Mel was learning to play guitar himself and within a year had started his first band playing classic rock and roll. Through college and graduate school (nice Jewish boys don't quit school to go to the beach or play rock and roll), Mel performed with a string of surf music bands, collectively known as the Mel-Tones, Now settled in northern California, Waldorf continues to play with the Mel-Tones playing with members of several well-known San Francisco area surf bands. In addition to his recording and performing ventures, Waldorf has written orginal surf music for a variety of TV shows and movies including Nickelodeon's "SpongeBob SquarePants", Disney's "My Favorite Martian" and MTV's "The Real World." But it is Meshugga Beach Party - his own creation - that is currently garnering him the most attention.

This was great! I guess I'm giving away my age, but it was very nostalgic for me. I bought one for my rabbi - he had tears in his eyes when I gave it to him. I also bought one for my son, age 27, who loves all types of music - I haven't sent it to him yet but I know he'll love it.

  • I'm not Jewish and...

...I don't have to be to enjoy this great CD. And neither do you. Great tunes, great vibe and alot of fun. I might just start wearing a Yarmulke when I go surfing!

  • Tov M'od! Phenomenal music.
    author: Dave

Tov M'od! Phenomenal music. Great beat. You've raised the bar. Sit down with a He Brew beer (microbrew/Kosher) and enjoy the music. Great surfing music and great Jewish music - the best two-in-one deal in town. Mel brings great cool life to traditional Jewish music in ways one could never imagine. Hearing is believing. Keep up the good work. Seder-machers: This is great music between courses! We anxiously await MBP II (or MBP Shetayim)!

  • A very goog beach party!

A little review by a french listener (so, by advance, excuse my english). I found this CD very good. A mix of jewish old songs and surf music successful. When you hear it, you want to surf immediatly. Hava Nagila, a classic theme of surf (also covered by a french surf group: The Bikini Men) or the israelian hymn are very nice to hear in theses versions. Don't hesitate, make yourself a present and buy like Stephen Shores says: "The best Hebrew surf music" !

  • all the oldies and goodies

I recognized all but two of the tunes, which are Yiddish in origin, not Israeli/Hebrew/liturgical. They took me back on a pleasant trip to my modern yeshiva upbringing (well, in the 70s) in a very hip California way. Definitely Pipeline/Hawaii-Five-O music; if you didn't know they were Hebrew songs, you wouldn't know the difference. I wish each song were a bit longer, not the usual under-3-minutes format. Still, I am enjoying it immensely, and my (unfortunately somewhat assimilated) teenage daughter got in the car shortly after I got the CD, and instantly started singing along with it, with the Hebrew words. That made it all worthwhile. I wouldn't mind if they came out with a "Volume II" with more songs.

  • EVERYBODY'S GONE SURFIN'- SURFIN' OY VAY!

"Meshugga Beach Party"? It's Hebrew school gone Hawaiian- and, incidentally, a pretty darned good surf-rock record. Mel Waldorf, who grew up traditionally Jewish back east, is a great player who took all the great Hebrew school, Israeli folk, and even liturgical songs and- well, he rocks! If you didn't know any better, you'd swear this was vintage Dick Dale or the Ventures. It so happens that "Hava Nagila" really was a surf standard (Dick Dale was half-Jewish!), and Mel takes off on this. He's got a gift to make these songs- even the stately "Kol Nidre" and "Avinu Malkeinu"- sound like they're close cousins to "Hawaii Five-O" and "Pipeline". Highly recommended for the bar mitzvah boy- and his baby-boomer parents!

I listen to this music when im ready to go surfing. Its a mix of Jewish flavor with beach themed riffs. I loved it!!

  • Loads of fun!
    author: Stephen Shores

The best Hebrew surf music CD I have in my collection.... umm, well, make that the ONLY one. :) This CD is tons of fun--I had it playing nonstop for almost a week!

  • I love it and my Hebrew schooler boogies to it!
    author: Marion Garbo Seltzer

I put this CD on and hit the track selector for 5 and asked my third-grader "What's this song?" It took about six measures and then her eyes sparkled and she said "Dayenu!" And that was enough. . . for me to know I'd made a good purchase. I'm not very traditional, but I have to admit I was worried about what might have been done to the Kol Nidre, but it was treated with reasonable dignity and respect. My personal favorite track is Zum Gali Gali, which ought to make even Bubbie and Zayde shake a tail feather.

  • It was THE needle in the haystack - YESSSS!
    author: Ray Wilkins

The CD was great like others are great. BUT what really made it a jewel in the crown - what I've been waiting decades for - the answer to my prayer - was their rendition of Kol Nidre. In my opinion that, by itself, made the CD priceless. -Ray-

  • Mother-in-Law: Why do you say this is beach music?
    author: JohnnyB

My Hanukkah gift to my MIL. Me: This is that Cd I played at the Break Fast that you liked. MIL: Oh, yes. Why do you say this is beach music? Me: Surf music. It has that Dick Dale, surf guitar, reverb sound. MIL: I don't know what that is. It just sounds like good Jewish music. Me: It is, but look at the cover. MIL: So? This is just a picture. Why do you say this is beach music?

Now I know what the shuls in HI play on Purim! ;) Seriously, we had this playing in the control room and my director said " This is ONE rockin' CD!" I agree. Good solid surf guitar blended with classic Jewish tunes makes " Meshuggah Beach Party" an OY! to listen to. Great stuff from Mel Waldorf.

Traditional Jewish melodies... Instrumental surf music... Who knew? Funny guy, Mel Waldorf, has an impressive ability of mixing a Dick Dale-esque surf guitar with an endless sense of humor. His original surf compositions have been featured on television shows such as "Spongebob Squarepants" and "My Favorite Martian". Mel explains how the concept of Meshugga Beach Party came about in a post-seder haze induced by an excess of wine, matzoh, potato kugel and geflite fish. "The parting of the Red Sea and the curl of the Banzai Pipeline. The sands of the Sinai and the waves at Waikiki. The Diamond District and Diamond Head. The songs of the Jews and the sound of the surf guitar!"

  • Surprise your Rabbi! The Surf is Up!
    author: Mtngoat

This has to be the best thing at the Bar/Bat Mitzvah party. Good old tunes that you sing in synagogue and home, but *really* fun now. 'Dayenu' will be never be the same and you'll have throw your dreidels in the sand to 'Oh Hanukkah'. And if you love surf-rock - this is a must have.

  • Heavy on the reverb. A delight for surf music fans!
    author: Tommy Del Pittman

Dick Dale would be proud of this musical marriage. You'll be looking for the beach party just as this hodad did after giving it a listen.

  • Oy! You should only play surf like this boychick already!
    author: marshotel

This CD can be appreciated on two levels. First, it's a great surf CD. But, it is also an innovative "in-joke" for those familiar with the traditional versions of the songs. My wife loved it and my in-laws loved it...probably for different reasons. Transcends the generations.
