You want pyrotechnic folk? Like blues? Long for songs that inspire and touch your heart--that offer a different point of view than just the "common wisdom?"
Then you need to hear Siobhan Quinn and Michael Bowers, and the disc, Dreamers, Lovers, and Outlaws.
The 12 songs on the disc span the range from hopeful desires for peace to hard hitting blues. In between there are songs that introduce you to characters and events that you don't meet everyday--like Bill Ballou, the 92 year old who dies (not surprising, people do die at that age). But what is surprising is how he dies--in a bar fight, as the instigator.
The album contains 8 original songs, written by Bowers, or co-written by Bowers and Quinn, and 4 covers, including Nanci Griffith's "Love at the Five and Dime" and Pink Floyd's "On the Turning Away" performed essentially in an a capella version.
It's folk--with an attitude. It's acoustic rock with a traditional foundation. It's campfire music--but around an urban campfire. It's blues at its heart with a 21st century sound. However you classify or categorize it, it's good.
Quinn is a 2006 WAMMIE winner (Washington Area Music Association Awards) for Traditional Folk Vocalist, and Boston Folk Festival Finalist for songwriting. She can sing in Irish, and belt the blues.
Bowers is a 2005 Kerrville New Folk Finalist/ 2006 South Florida Folk Finalist, and known for his songs that literally paint stories...they've even been called "folk operas."
Together, in 2007, they have been selected as Kerrville New Folk Finalists, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artists, Southwest Regional Folk Alliance Formal Showcase Artists, Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Formal Showcase Artists, Performance Alley (formal showcase) Artists at the International Folk Alliance Conference, and Alternates for the FAR West Folk Alliance Conference. They both were instructors at the Rocky Mountain Song School this year, and performed on the Wildflower stage at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival.
With these credentials, they obviously have talent, but from the geography (Boston vs. Kerrville, Texas), it's clear they bring different influences to their work. Meld them, and you get rich original and traditional music with strong harmony laden vocals over acoustic, resonator, & high strung guitars.
Their music calls you to look at the world, and yourself, in a new and bigger way. That's what good music should do for all of us, and that's what they do best.

No matter what the category...a lovely album
author: Mark VirgilioI'm not quite sure how to categorize this album, but I love it. There's some blues, some country, some ballads...but a really nice mix. It starts oddly with a gospel ballad anthem that is so beautiful that you don't care that it isn't a typical album opener. Valentino's Ghost is a favorite of mine, especially when Siobhan Quinn starts belting out lines. Champion of Love is growing on me, as I realize what a good song it is. Kerourac Dreams is the perfect vocal for Michael Bowers. Siobhan really starts cooking on Boys Will Be Boys and I love the growl in her voice. The Light in Your Eyes is another great vocal tour de force for Siobhan. They also cover two of my favorite songs, Nancy Griffith's Love At the Five and Dime, this time with Michael taking the lead vocal, and Pink Floyd's On the Turning Away, which sounds even more like a traditional Scottish ballad here. I listened to these songs over and over again and have yet to get tired or bored of them...they're arranged and sung so well.

Worth the Wait!

Whether they're singing the inspirational, comforting "Let It Come" or the story of "Valentino's Ghost," their voices take the music and lyrics and shape them, bringing the songs to life. The original material is outstanding, refreshing, innovative--where else can you hear the town of Port Jervis being used within a song? The CD also includes several cover tunes, carefully selected to fit in "naturally" with the rest of the collection. But Quinn and Bowers have a way of making these songs their own, arranging, cajoling a tone from the lyrics, immersing themselves into the meaing of the songs. ONE TERRIFIC CD!
author: Jonathan SandersThis CD is stellar. The first song is so needed today...a song for peace and healing. Then there is Kerouac Dreams, which also is quiet and introspective...and at the end a great cover of Pink Floyd's On the Turning Away...simple, and compelling. The rest of this CD just rocks. It has songs that are full band and full of life, blues, and very good acoustic folk/rock music. I read on their website that Jerry Marotta is the drummer on this disc, and he is simply world class...and it shows. The other players also add parts that fully complement the music. If you only get one or two discs off of CD baby, this should be one of your picks.
