notes
The emergence of this collection from the East Midlands of England is pretty stunning. Keen has been around in various guises for several years, but this is his first collection as himself, and represents his work distilled into the purest of forms. It is an acoustic set, emotionally intense yet always contemporary rather than backward looking. Moreover it is upbeat, and at times both lyrics and guitar are angry and possessive: see the instrumental Woodbourne or the lyrics to Building Up A River and Another Minute. Moreover the sounds are all in there: Cuban and American South, sinuous percussion and fretless bass, all woven around a bluesy guitar backdrop. Anyone who can rhyme "breakfast" with "reckless" gets my vote - this is one stroke up.
