Quirky, pop laced with soul

notes

The Massacoustics put a new and powerful twist on the term acoustic duo. If you take the energy of McCartney's melodies, the confident vocals of Crowded House and added the depth of Al green you would get a sound similar to the infectious groove called The Massacoustics.

The duo consists of Andy Thompson on guitar and vocals and Matt Thompson on bass, percussion and vocals. They grew up just south of Boston Massachusetts and started playing music early on in grade school. To any musical connoisseur, it's impossible to beat sibling harmonies. When you combine superb musicianship and stellar vocals to their unique songs you end up with an undeniable brand of acoustic rock.

Individually, Andy and Matt have logged thousands of hours as studio and touring musicians. With extensive travels throughout the United States, Canada and parts of Europe they've shared the stage with everyone from Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings (of The Rolling Stones) to Nickel Creek, Bad Finger and Willie Nelson. They have done studio sessions with legendary cats like Al Cooper And Steve Earle .

After years of playing in different bands all over the world, it seemed obvious that the two should pool their natural talents and focus exclusively on writing and performing as a unit. The duo originally formed with the sole purpose of getting some of their songs heard, but after the response of the crowd, it was evident that they were on to something. From their first note on stage, it was hard to believe that a sound that big was coming from just two people. Since 2001, audiences everywhere have felt the excitement of their live performances, and every return trip is met with an epidemic buzz.

suburban songs to me was a instant success, great vocals and music really lights up the crowd. I see them every time they are in Key West

This CD is GREAT! Wasn't sure from the snipets here, but we picked it up at the KeyWest show last month and are already wearing it out. Matt & Andy are awesome and this CD is really fun. This one's more diverse and truly shows how talented these two guys are. Can't wait for them to get the big break they deserve.

Buy this cd. Yes, now. And shame on those of you trying to pigeon-hole Matt and Andy into a specific type of music when clearly they can play, and excel at any genre. FOR SHAME! Let them keep playing the music they love and feel at the moment and we will keep getting excellent cd's from them. By the way, songs 2, 3, 8 and 10 are my favorites. They make me smile.

  • Wonderful!

As usual its as good or even better than the others. LOVE Letting Go. Find the songs are maturing a bit. And the boys are very easy on the eyes. (ok, now stop playing Tommy live)

  • Another gem from Matt and Andy

This one was a little different from the previous two cds with the additional musicians but still just as good. I can't understand why these guys aren't on a major label.

  • Different but good

This CD is a bit different from the Matt and Andy I saw every night for a week in Key West a couple of years ago. It took a few plays to get the feel of it. It's more edgy than some of their earlier stuff. Some of the tracks are better than others (Hollow Heart is an early favourite). No bad tracks - but the last minute of Breaking Away, with the same lyric repeated over and over again is a bit irritating. All in all, another good CD, which was swiftly loaded onto my MP player for the walk to and from work.

  • these guys are so talented, the harmonies are great, i would love to see them in

headed out of my reach, will be sad -glad to see the talent soon become out of my reach, but for now they make me smile, and that's all i need...

  • Love the boys !!

I have to say that I love the Massacoustics, but this is not my favorite album of theirs. I put Suburban Song and Hollow Heart on repeat, and the other songs are good, but I love those two because they remind more of their live shows and of their original sound. Don't get me wrong I'm willing to try new things, and I will support the boys no matter what.

  • Another Great Album!!!

This guy Kirk is an idiot! The CD is great! Yes the album is a change from what we are used to from the Thompson bro's, but that just shows how talented there song writing abilities are. Suburban song and Hollow Heart are definately standouts on this one. Great job guys!!!

While i must say I was taken back that it wasn't the mainly acoustic sound I was expecting, it's growing on me. I love evrything Matt and Andy have done so far. But must admit that my favorites on this CD are the ones that lean a little bit closer to the sounds of their previous CD's.

  • I'm psyched about this CD. Couldn't wait for it to get here.
    author: Ed B. (Trenton NJ)

I think this CD is fantastic. Love Hollow Heart and Talkin'. Heard them live about a year ago and have been waiting to get them on CD. I don't really think these guys can do any wrong. Each CD from the Thompson Bros. days to now shows how talented they are and I enjoy each album more than any albums out there in the entire industry.

  • What Happened Guys????
    author: Kirk

The reason I loved the Massacoustics was because they had a unique summer-sound and they are incredible live performers. They had something wonderful and original going. Now, they've rushed to put out a third album and it kinda SUCKS! Breaking Away and Hollow Hollow heart are the only stand-outs from this album. Matt and Andy have switched from what has made them one of the best bands in the world, to bubble gum Pop garbage. This sounds like a CD some 14 year old girl would love (for about 2 weeks, or until the next Jessica Simpson record came out). I still love the Massacoustics, and I understand that no one can wright all great tunes. But with this album they took a complete 180 and are headed toward musical pergatory. If you want to hear a great new album, go to a show and buy the Hit Me Hard CD. That is a great record. But Suburban Sounds missed the mark entirely. Try Harded guys. I know you'll do better next time. And please, dont hurry. I can wait for a great album. But dont ever give me crap like this agail. -Thanks

  • The Massacoustics are bested by no one (well, maybe the Eagles)
    author: Kirk E.

Honestly, I believe this is the best band in the world right now. If youve never made it out to see them live, then you have no idea what you are missing. Sure, their albums are fantastic, but in concert is where Matt and Andy shine. I am almost saddened when I think about how soon, the Massacoustics will get picked up by a huge record label and go on a stadium tour, and I wont be able to afford to be close to the stage, and I wont be able to talk with the guys after the show. But they are destined for fame, and who am I to not want that? BUY THIS CD. You wont regret it. Tell everyone you know about the Massacoustics. They are amazing.

It's like 3 cds in 1. You've got a little Beatle-esque at the beginning, a little punk & funk, and the typical romantic savvy you'd expect from Andy & Matt. By the way, I LOVE Letting Go. Which one wrote that song?

  • Even better than the first....
    author: Nikki

I loved the first CD, but this one is MUCH better! It's much more diverse. It's definately my favorite CD at the mo moment. Keep it up, Matt and Andy!!

  • I LOVE this cd!
    author: Jayda

How can the music possibly keep getting better....but it does. I cannot get these songs out of my head, especially the title song and Hollow Heart!

  • s'great. of course
    author: Toronto Freak

OK - I haven't even received the CD yet...but we all know it's going to be great. I've heard three of the songs live and the teasey bits here are awesome. That's enough for me. Besides, I wanted to have the first review (because it's all about me). Hope that works out!
