"A simple no-frills collection of old time tunes on banjo...played with great delicacy and restraint. I found myself listening to it repeatedly..." Donald Nitchie/Banjo Newsletter, August 2000
Mary Z. is a third generation Floridian and received her first banjo when she was twelve. Her granddad was a professional banjo player, and his father was an old time fiddler from St. Joe, Missouri. His Dad was Cyclone Thompson who rode the Pony Express.
Mary Z. Cox's warm, laid back, banjo is featured on her four CDs. (Vintage Banjo, Walkin' That Banjo Home,Dulcimer Fandango& A Secret Life Of Banjo) She's the 2004 winner of the Tommy Thompson Memorial Old Time Banjo Contest (Florida Folk Festival), 2003 Florida Old Time Banjo Champion, and the 2002 Florida Old Time Mountain Dulcimer Champion. She plays string band dance music and duets with her husband, Bob, and records with friends and family.
Her tabs, articles, and MP3s have been published in Banjo Newsletter. She is a regular performer and workshop host at the Florida Folk Festival and takes great delight in helping others discover their banjo style.

Vintage Banjo
author: Nancy GarrttThe CD arrived quickly in great condition. I purchased it for my husband who is still enjoying the banjo picking. He's always wanted to learn Cherokee Shuffle and now he can.

Loved it, Well done.
author: Pete FifeI love a well frailed banjo and I think Mary is brilliant. Especially enjoyed "Dixie". In fact I only bought the CD on the strength of "Dixie" and ended up loving the whole thing. Well done!!

author: RorschachGreat old time banjo tunes with some nice guitar and fiddle fills. Nice restrained technique. You can loop this CD for a very long time and not get tired of it.
Very good playing
author: DLAI think this is a great resource... I'm learning to play old-time, and am especially interested in Civil War, or vintage, banjo. Great playing. Thank you!

Just get it, any one of these songs is worth the cost of the CD and supporting such musicians. When that one song connects with you the joy is timeless, simple, and chalked full of that universal understanding. All her CD's have at the least 4 jewels in them. Not one lyric and just an essential exposure.

author: Ceolsaige O'Donnelli would like to say that this CD is a really amasing CD! you feel nice, and sweet inside! I really don't know what a Clawhammer is....hmmm....o well that's ok! a lot of people that i talk 2 think that banjo music is for the people down south, but that's really untrue! who wants 2 hear killing, and other horrible stuff that other people say in other songs! this (i think)brighten's up your spirits when you down in the dumps! thank you ~Ceolsaige O'Donnell~
Great CD!
author: BumperGreat CD! Loved the music. I'm a beginning frailer and found the music a big help to "feel" what clawhammer is all about!

author: kelsey byrneo wow, i love this c.d! my friends hate it but i love it! it's so humble and awesome! people should give banjo people a break and i bet if more people listen to this kind of music, then i think more people might be happier than listening to songs that talk about bad things that happen already in the world. I LOVE IT! yeeeehaaaalll! this rox my sox!
Beautiful claw hammer banjo from my favorite banjoist!
author: Jael KahnI love this music. It is more old time sounding than Ms. Cox's more recent CD, A Secret Life Of Banjo, because it also has guitar and fiddle. The standout track on this CD is a slow, haunting version of "Dixie" on banjo with guitar chords. There are no politics or war cries in this version--just a pretty melody that takes you beyond that. There is a banjo/fiddle duet on "Little Black Dog Gone Trottin' Down the Road" that really defines what I think old time music should sound like. The fiddle and banjo weave around each other in a sound that is almost organic. There are a couple pretty Celtic pieces too (Dunsmore Lasses is my favorite)--slow and pretty--that really opened my eyes on what a clawhammer banjo could sound like with some thoughtful arrangement. I've only owned this CD a short while and I've already played it everyday. Many good traditional tunes. My only criticism is that Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine is too short and I'd like to hear a longer version.
Melodic Clawhammer Banjo at its best
author: Wick SmithThis CD is so far from showboating you almost feel like there is a deliberate effort on the part of the artist to hold back. Mary Z Cox has a wonderful clawhammer style which is a refreshing change from the lightning-fast bluegrass banjo most people are accustomed to. Here, the emphasis is on the old-time melodies and a sure-footed technique that brings them out. Other clawhammer collections I have heard had a monotony to them that would put non-players to sleep. This CD has variety and good craft combined with good tune selection.
Wonder ful CD! Mary Cox is great!

BANJO-L 2/3/2002 I've bought quite a few CDs because they were mentioned on BANJO-L. All too often I've been dazzled by the speed and virtuosity, but left with no desire to try to emulate or, indeed, to hear the CD again. One hearing is plenty. Sometimes blinding speed and dazzling technique ends up being tiring and “nervous-making” to listen to. Not so with one I got today. It is called VINTAGE BANJO. Mary Z. Cox frailing, Bob Cox on guitar, and Kay Van Treese on fiddle and guitar. Clean, sensitive, and deeply satisfying string band music. Oh, there's plenty of technique there, but it is employed for the sake of the music and not used to dazzle the listener. The usual disclaimers. Never ever heard of Mary Z. Cox before.
