Mary Pascoe's debut album "Who Brings a Cat to the Disco?" will creep up behind you, knock you off your feet, and run away giggling. The seemingly innocent redhaired songstress from Michigan has opened her mind and is inviting you in for a journey of pain, love, and a salty taste of every other emotion imaginable.
"I tend to be overly methodical and have been known to have a tremendous fear of imperfection, but something snapped during this last year. I finally realized how beautiful something could be when it was perfectly imperfect. This album has a very raw feel, and that vulnerability is what most of the songs are all about," Pascoe says with her signature coy smile.
She speaks specifically of "When You Finally Decide," a song where her fingers dance along the keys and her voice weaves in and out around the notes.
"It's that one recording of a song where you accidentally hit a wrong note, but it exposes the vulnerability of the song... it takes you into the life of the woman behind it. She's singing to you from a place of pain and great inner depths of despair. She's been alone for years, clinging to a memory of a love she once knew that had been gone for so long... but every morning she awoke and would go through the motions of making this man's breakfast-- completely forgetting he's no longer living with her. She is a vegetarian, but the girl in this story is so submissive that she will even cook meat for the man who haunts her, controls her, overcomes her... even after all these years that they've been apart. This girl is not me, but she is a part of me in the way that she is a part of everyone else in the world. She is weak, afraid, alone, and unable to accept the loss of her husband. She is wondering what it would feel like to finally decide she's had enough wanting, enough waiting... She wonders how it will feel when she decides to end her life.
The girl is here because she wants to teach us all not to do what she did. She is inside all of us, crying out to us when we let men beat us or treat us badly, and she yells at us when we get so depressed about a relationship that we just want to crawl into a hole and never date again and always think about that one last person.
This girl made a mistake. And she knows it. She couldn't let go of him. She became depressed and deluded. She is me. She is you. She is all of us. But now she lives within us to keep us going past heartbreak to the new love waiting just beyond the break. She's the one that keeps you strong when you feel a little weak."
After making her big screen debut in the Julia Roberts film "Mona Lisa Smile," Pascoe has been working tirelessly at creating pieces of art visually, aurally, and everything in between. She's been seen on stage in Los Angeles theatrically in Crack Whore, Bulimic, Girl Next Door and accompanied by her guitar at venues such as The Viper Room, Club Good Hurt, and Brasserie Les Voyous.

Beautiful
author: George FreemanUsually as critical as I am of music, I take bites at indie singers 'making their own way', but this one, I must take a step back. Something about her nearly scares me, makes me breathe a bit sharper, makes me listen a bit deeper. And I will not deny her wit and pure genius. I am, so say a word, impressed. Beyond belief. Well done, young lad.

author: c.c. phillipsi had trouble rating this album because it's SO indie that you can tell there was no budget to work with. the songs are great and the singing and instrumentals are outstanding but it doesn't really showcase the artist's real talents. i first heard mary pascoe perform at a bar in l.a. and she really blew me away. i would love to see what she will do when there's more expensive recording equipment involved down the line in her career. i still listen to this album often and think it's great but don't expect it to sound like something from a huge record company. 4/5 ONLY because it's not "studio perfect" in quality. it's still way better than those crappy pop albums!

author: Jay MorganI only have good things to say about this album. Mary Pascoe is obviously very smart and a terrific writer. On top of that she is very talented and beautiful. I listen to "Empty at Night" everyday. I would recommend this CD to everyone I meet.

author: Chris ParkerHer music reminds me of Jewel. But her voice is more beautiful. AH! I have no words. I met her at a show she did at The Viper Room and have been obsessed ever since!! AND SHE'S SO NICE and down to earth!! Everyone I've turned on to her music has loved it!! Can't believe she's not a huge star yet!! Faves are "In Your Hands", "Fall Into Me", and "Angel" .. but they're all GORGEOUS!
Sad but honest and honestly beautiful

Mary Pascoe is a breath of fresh air for those of us who can't stand manufactured pop songs from the likes of Ashlee Simpson and Avril Lavigne. True to the heart and madly genius. A definite recommendation for anyone who likes Fiona Apple, Liz Phair, Sheryl Crow, Sarah McLachlan, Paula Cole, Natalie Merchant, Jonatha Brooke, and so on. An indie masterpiece!

author: JJ Walka Music RagI have to admit that I don't usually like garage bands. I'm a student of the people, and the people like perfect studio mixes. Lots of background production. Lots of, let's face it, distraction from the main vocals and lyrics. This is honestly the first time I've ever been impressed with something that doesn't have all that jazz. The truth? Mary Pascoe doesn't seem to need it. As much as I, and all those big record labels, might hate to admit it, this singer doesn't need any help. Her powerful vocals and impressive instrumentals would make anyone believe a multi-billion dollar record label was behind this album. You'd be shocked to learn she did this all on her own. I sure was... and I'm doing my part to spread the word. As this redheadeded pioneer always says, "Support indie music"-- buy the record, folks. I did.

author: Tom HarrisI am in utter disbelief! Mary Pascoe is pretty much that artist you wait for. You hear people with pretty voices all the time. You hear deep lyrics all the time. You hear about gorgeous girls with stage presence all the time. How often do you get this all in the same package? Not often. On top of that, she's totally down to earth and is really nice to her fans. That's incredibly rare! Check out this album and you get it all. I envy anyone who gets to make money off this girl, and even moreso, the people who get to see her sing LIVE! I can't wait until that day! For now I will sit back and eat up anything and everything she gives me. Thank you for being such a musical genius, Mary Pascoe!
