notes
In a world of disposable pop music, there are a few artists who
somehow manage to create music that pierces the monotonous
tedium of the Top 40. From the first time we hear them there is
an intimacy, a fire, a subtle shade of interpretation that spurs
our imagination. With repeated encounters comes a warmth and
familiarity that can only be described as visceral. We connect
with them. We feel we know them. Mary-Kathryn is such an
artist.
On her fourth album, Dreams & Visions, Mary-Kathryn blends
elements of soft pop, rock and folk with world music influences
as diverse as the continents to create a spiritual amalgam that
transcends musical boundaries. Sophisticated without being
elitist; understated without being simplistic, Mary-Kathryn
displays an emotional depth that can only be described as
remarkable. The album features appearances by Hugh Marsh
on Violin and Fergus Marsh on Chapman Stick & Bass, Tony
Morra on Drums & Percussion, the Finnish vocal group Fire
4U, co-produced by Paul Buono and Mary-Kathryn and
mixed by Tony Palacios at the Sound Kitchen.
While her earlier releases hinted at Mary-Kathryn’s world music
influences, her new millennium release, One Spirit, exploded with
exotic rhythms and Old World passions. Middle Eastern
cadences nestled comfortably against Native American
inflections. Traditional folk melodies from France, Italy, and
America melded seamlessly with musical influences from such
faraway lands as India and Ireland, Africa and Egypt. And shot
through it all was a deep and abiding spirituality.
With Dreams & Visions Mary-Kathryn delves even deeper into
the world music realm, painting word pictures on an aural
canvas with exotic instrumentation, adroit production, and
lyrics that are nothing short of God-haunted. But as Billboard
Magazine’s reviewer so aptly put it, “the most affecting
instrument…is Mary-Kathryn’s lovely voice.”

SINGER MARY-KATHRYN HAS “DREAMS & VISIONS” OF A BETTER WORLD
author: Ryan YoungMARY-KATHRYN DREAMS & VISIONS Spiritual vocalist Mary-Kathryn says she named this recording DREAMS & VISIONS because she dreams of world unity and has visions of all humankind fully-accepting the traditions, languages and religious beliefs of others. Her lyrics reflect her faith in the future. She is one of the few musical artists around to sing deeply spiritual lyrics over a world music-influenced sound that also includes elements of new age and adult pop. Her absolutely-gorgeous voice floats over exquisite music featuring violin, keyboards, guitars and world-beat percussion. Mary-Kathryn has worked in the studio with such top musicians as guitarist Jerry McPherson and drummer Steve Brewster, both of whom have recorded with Faith Hill, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, The Winans, Jewel, Sandi Patty, Peter Cetera, Twila Paris and other top acts. Mary-Kathryn has performed on-stage and in concert with Steve Bell, Sharif Iman, B.J. Thomas, Hugh Marsh (Loreena McKennitt, Dan Fogelberg, Barenaked Ladies, Mary Margaret O’Hara) and Fergus Marsh (Bruce Cockburn, Pierce Pettis, Lisa Dal Bello). The Marsh brothers also perform on this latest CD. M-K has sung with Aboubacar “Papa” Camara and the Finnish group Fire 4U. Mary-Kathryn wrote one song on Dreams & Visions by herself and the rest she co-wrote with producer Paul Buono except the traditional church hymn “My Father’s World” from the early 1900s (with their new arrangement) and Buono’s “Wailing Wall” which features Mary-Kathryn’s wordless vocalizing. In addition, John Elefante from the rock group Kansas assisted with the melody on another composition. This CD has an adult-pop appeal because of its catchiness and Mary-Kathryn’s lovely voice. The music is new age with some world music sounds if you take the stance that new age is so broad it includes Enya and Loreena McKennitt. The bottom-line is that this is highly-enjoyable music with a gentle, spiritual direction.
