notes

Contemporary singer/songwriter/poet Terence Martin has released his 5th independent CD, Even Trade, on the Good Dog Music label. The new collection of 12 original songs features the artist’s most personal and ambitious work to date, sophisticated and spiritual in tone, with roots in folk, americana and pop. Seven of the songs were written with long time collaborator, Gregory Hicks.

From themes of freedom vs responsibility and revisiting the past, to loves lost and found, the new release joins a finely crafted body of work, rich with poetic imagery and stellar musicianship.

Even Trade was produced by Terence and Dennis Hrbek and features performances by Jim Allyn on mandolin, guitar & accordion, Clifford Carter on piano, Rick Gedney on guitar and Dan Bonis on slide guitar, Brian Nesgoda on drums, Amy Berkson on harmony vocals and Gordon Roehrer & Joe Dochtermann on bass.

Terence’s previous CDs, Lost Hills, Sleeper, Waterproof & his debut, Division Street have all received national radio airplay & excellent reviews.

"Terence Martin claims Richard Thompson, Greg Brown, and Bruce Cockburn as some of his songwriting heroes - with good reason. Maybe he should add Ernest Hemingway, too. He shares with them a clarity of expression, a sense of place, and a gift for the telling phrase. His new CD 'Even Trade' is another display of his mastery." (John Platt, WFUV Radio)

“ …a brilliantly produced, finely crafted album.” ( Richard Cuccaro, Acoustic Live in NY)

“In a career studded with solid craftsmanship and one fine album after another, Terence Martin has produced a masterpiece. His use of metaphor and symbol are as finely writ as any serious novelist and stand on a peer footing with the work of Neil Young or Bob Dylan. (John Hammel, Homegrown Radio)

“Terence Martin belongs in the foremost pantheon of contemporary singer songwriters.” (Sing Out magazine)

“Martin is a poet in the greatest sense of the word.”
(Singer & Musician magazine)

“An extraordinarily skillful writer whose powerful songs are impossible to forget.”
(Charlie Backfish ,WUSB radio)

I've know Terence for a long time. This is clearly his best work in a long line of really greaat stuff. A bit like Richard Thompson, he is an aquired taste, too thoughtful and smart for some (Like Thompson) He will wear well if you listen, and ten years from now you will like him even better.

Terence, I am ordering Lost Hills and Even Trade. I first heard your music on KBAC radio free Santa Fe, and then I heard Santa Rosa, Nm - I'm from Santa Rosa Nm, but I just heard the song once and will listen more now that I get it - my computer speakers do not work, but I'm wondering - did anything bad happen in Santa Rosa in regard to you losing something?

He just keeps getting better and better. One of the unsung, great talents of our time. I mean really "go ask the rain, it will show you how to fall"? And I thought Lost Hills and Slleper were great!

Once again, TM has produced a wonderfully insightful CD, wonderful to listen to and chock full of creative turns of phrases with his own use of very personal musicality. For those of us who have had the pleasure of hearing his other work/CDs, there are familiar themes here (Adam & Eve, moving forward from life changes as we all attempt to grow up). Although I've had Even Trade on in the car ever since I received it, the title song remains my favorite for it's musical simplicity, depth and skill of word use. Only a true born-in-the-bones writer can write lyrics like that, and TM remains my new favorite.

i actually would go 5 stars because although his style is uniquely his own, he is consistant with the sound and voice that sounds like thinking out loud. soft enough to be subtle, yet delivering strong, and experiance driven stories of evolution, and changes. the only thing that is consistant is change.and that people from jersey are talented, every body knows that. i love cd baby because i learn from listening to your other artests, (there should be an award for your taste in artful magic of music), and the satalite radio station that is the conduit to my own exploration of these fine people that otherwise would not have gotten into my head. oh one more thing. you just don't find folk stations, or folk venues in arizona unless some one comes through town. thanks for what i haven't even heard yet, but i will be waiting, scotty...
