Stunning singer and acclaimed songwriter Martha Redbone drops an album of "fabulous old school soul". Neville Brothers meets Aretha Franklin meets Native American tribal powwow.

notes

”SKINTALK” is the spectacular new album from the acclaimed MARTHA REDBONE. Redbone’s world class vocals emote beautifully crafted songs of struggle and victory, love and war, to a heady brew of live band Native funk and sumptuous earthy soul grooves with splashes of rock, jazz and traditional Native music.

MOJO MAGAZINE “Fabulous album. This Brooklyn-based singer with Native American ancestry had fashioned a remarkable record that distils the soulful essence of acts like Rufus, Earth, Wind & Fire and Sly & the Family Stone but never sounds derivative or dated. The songs range from shimmering mid-tempo soul grooves (including the wonderfully uplifting Children of Love) to rock-tinged funk and bittersweet ballads. Martha Redbone is uniquely individual, Skintalk is supremely soulful. A gem of a record.”

PERFORMING SONGWRITER MAGAZINE “Part Neville Brothers, part Aretha Franklin, part tribal pow-wow. Redbone follows in the footsteps of recent Grammy winners Ozomatli, proving that distinct influences can come together and make relevant and thoroughly enjoyable music.”

BLUES AND SOUL MAGAZINE “Once in a blue moon an album comes along out of nowhere that starts by giving you goose bumps and ends by knocking you completely off your feet. This is one such album. In terms of quality and soulfulness it eclipses everything else I've heard this year. It's that good. Really. Thoughtful, intelligent songs that use mythic imagery to touch on racial and socio-political issues as well as themes of love and life. A stunning album”

TIME OUT NY “In our opinion Martha Redbone deserves Alicia Keys level success. She has the deep funk to back up her soul queen image and live she brings a groove-heavy power-house of a band.”

ECHOES MAGAZINE “Album of the year…should be a million seller...a BIG artist.”

NATIVE PEOPLES MAGAZINE “The perfect combination of gloss and grit…remarkable pipes….Earth, Wind & Fire on the rez…Her talent is too large to remain a secret; she has all the chops necessary to become a major star.”

“SKINTALK” is the winner of the INDIAN SUMMER MUSIC AWARD “ALBUM of the YEAR 2005”, the INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS “RnB ALBUM of the YEAR 2006” and ECHOES magazine “ALBUM of the YEAR” 2005.

Martha continues to perform all over the country and internationally. Go to www.myspace.com/martharedbonemusic for the calendar and see if there’s a concert in your neighborhood.

Amsterdam News “Nothing less than spectacular… scintillating, mind blowing, music expanding songs …her scale defying voice reflects the best of soul/RnB past, present and future and she is supported by a superb band …clearly in a league of her own.”

News From Indian Country “. “Redbone’s performances are nonstop high-energy affairs featuring soulful Big Sky vocals and ecstatic dancing seasoned by the tightest, funkiest band imaginable. “

It was a honor to meet you and visit with you at the Creek Casino. You have a great voice and I believe you will go far in your career. I'm just sorry that you did not have the people there to enjoy your music. Being a member of the Cherokee Elders Council it makes us proud when one of our own can represent the Cherokee people so honorably. I was sure glad you had both CD's and I hope I don't have as much trouble finding your 3rd CD when it come out. Good luck and hope to see again Donna

Skintalk is a stunning body of work that includes fusing Native lyrics with R & B. Martha can sing! There is a maturity and depth in the lyrics written by Redbone that invites the listener to think. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys a solid, well-rounded litening experience.

I am so glad that I got this cd. I really love it. Martha is a a young Aretha Franklin and I really love her voice. I hope that she continues to make records because I really like Skintalk and I am considering buying her other cd Home of the Brave very soon. The song I especially like is Talk about It. It really hits home with all the problems that are going on with our young people. Especially the young Native Americans in this country are really being treated negativally. She is an inspiration to all the young Native American girls who strive to be so much more than society wants them to be. I applaud her on her music and wish the all the best in the world and in her future as an artist.

Heard a whole heap of these tracks live at the Jazz Cafe and it cemented my belief, one that blossomed on my first listen to Skintalk, that Martha Redbone is a woman to watch! Every track here has something: a vibe, a hook, a bounce, an earth-shattering vocal, a doe-eyed melancholy, a booty-bouncing funk inflection. Skintalk has shot right up my personal cd charts and should find its way straight into your collection.

  • Album of The Year
    author: Gordon Stone

Maybe not the most obvious soul record of the year, this second release from native American Indian, Martha has been the CD that has been most frequently played whether in the car or in the music room. Some tracks even found their way onto the dancefloor.

  • Smooth yet Funky
    author: Andrew Knights

Heard Future Street on Smooth FM London and thought it was fantastic. Sounds like another band called Hill St Soul, who also released on Dome in the UK, just like Martha will do in February. However, could not wait for Feb so ordered from the States and definitely worth it. CD is AWESOME!

  • Smooth, Raw and Tender all together
    author: Michiel Coolen

So many different moods and styles on the record. It has rock, soul, funk, blues, jazz, and so many more, mostly in the spirit of the 70ies... Her voice is so outstanding, it's hard to believe, she isn't more well-known... She writes her own songs and lyrics, wich is almost unique in this day and age...

  • Martha Redbone should be a household name right now.
    author: Manuel

If you've already heard all the samples off this album, then you should know there's absolutely NO reason why you shouldn't add this one to your collection. Skintalk isn't just an excellent piece of work from a very accomplished "triple-threat" (singing-songwriting-producing) artist, BUT A MODERN-DAY R&B/SOUL CLASSIC that can proudly stand alongside many others that came before it! Omg...this baby's so chock full of sparkling gems it's hard for me to pinpoint a favorite or two. For now, the ones I'm feeling the most are Talk About It (how a REAL soul tune ought to sound, IMHO), Just Because (inspired Philly-Soul tribute), and God Created Woman (DUG the lyrics on this song!). I'm pretty sure you'll wind up coming away with your personal faves after picking up this worthwhile effort from one of today's rising young stars. SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR THEN!?!? GET IT NOW!!!!!!

  • Buy this album if you like good music

It is rare to find a new album with such an old school soul/funk feel but which sounds so fresh. The sound quality is great, the hooks catchy, the vocals strong and the musicians pros. You`ll find yourself singing along even at the first listen - no kidding. Martha - you are a very talented woman and deserve to be recognised as such.

Martha has been a source of strength for me, being Native American myself. She brings our people pride and recognition, as most have no idea about Native Americans, or that we still exist at all. Her music..is beautiful...her soul...is beautiful.

  • This lady sings with her heart and soul
    author: SaveOurSoul

"Skintalk" is the sophomore album from Martha Redbone. Wasn't Redbone a band that had a huge hit in the early seventies with "Wounded Knee"? A song about Amerindian history ? Right! Well, Martha's definitely part of this history being the daughter of an Native American mother and an African American father. Influences from both sides of her roots can be found in her music like in the songs "Medicine Man" and "Children Of Love". But it's not folk music Martha's making, no not at all. What you'll be listening to on Skintalk is more like funk rock & soul. What ever the style she sings you will notice that Martha Redbone has a wonderful voice. This lady sings with her heart and soul. Together with Aaron Whitby she produced, arranged and wrote all the songs on this album. It's good to know that one of Martha's background singers is new recording artist Stephanie McKay who you might remember from her contribution on "Apothecary RX" from Carl Hancock Rux. Another familiar name on Skintalk is that of Jazzhole's percussionist Daniel Sadownick.(TA)

    author: Bob Davis: Soul-Patrol.com

Martha Redbone is one of the most prolific FUNK artists of the century. (how's that for a mouthful?) Her first album called "Home of the Brave" could be thought of literally as "female bookend" for the album "Urban Misfit" by Sonny Boy. That first CD combined influences from Stevie Wonder to Sly Stone to Shuggie Otis and more that truly makes it a psychedelic soul" classic. Now with her second CD "Skin Talk", Martha Redbone takes us to "love land" while still retaining her FUNK edge. There are some SERIOUS slow jams here on this CD in addition to her brand of acid drenched Shuggie Otis/Sly Stone influenced FUNK.

The platter is outstanding. The diversity in style (Neo-Soule to "near-Folk") left me wanting more. I anxiously await to see this young lady live.... D.C. is impressed.

Thank you Thank you for putting another huge smile on my face. Wow, I am blown away with this album. Fantastic vocals and funky soulful vibes. Favourite track so far has to be Children of Love, it has me and my 2 year old dancing around our lounge. Can't wait to see you live.

  • Martha is Spellbinding
    author: Julie Serena

I have seen Martha twice, live, and am so impressed with her work. I can't decide which of her recordings are my favorite...so I won't try. Buy them both! You won't be sorry. She will be livin' at the vinyard before long...no doubt.
