(About MP3 downloads at CD Baby)

Moody and eclectic as well as poignant and beautiful, this album is brimming with dark and delicious stories about love, life and loss - unique in perspective and universal in appeal.

notes

"Arguably the most charismatic female performer in rock".... Robert Hilburn 'Los Angeles Times'

Free of any obligations except to the music itself - Martha Davis returned to the studio in the fall of 2003 to record her first new album in 15 years.

Davis had written 100s of unreleased songs over the years and certainly could have recorded many albums but the time just wasn't right until the fall of 2003. The right songs, a talented band, a shared vision, combined with unstoppable momentum - every thing came together at once.

The time was right, Davis has written and produced an album that is moody and eclectic as well as poignant and beautiful. With the release of "...So the Story Goes, " Martha Davis has delivered a landmark album -- brimming with dark and delicious stories about love, life and loss - unique in perspective and universal in appeal.

For Davis -- the most important thing has always been the songs that she writes. "Songs are my way of processing information and dealing with emotions. Songs are a way of sharing my experiences." Davis' songs were at the heart of The Motels success - deep and disquieting tales about life's quirky underbelly. Stories told from a singular perspective - the mind's eye of Martha Davis. "I am a different woman than I was 15 years ago, and it's a different world but a song's job is still the same -- to communicate honestly and artistically in the hopes of moving somebody emotionally." "...So the Story Goes" raises the standards for the art of storytelling - leaving no emotional stone unturned -- it's a "sweet, sad, pathetic, mean, hopeful, scary album that you can dance to."

"...So the Story Goes" gives real meaning to the expression "alternative music" with a wealth of songs that cannot be explained by one musical style or contained by a single genre. Compelling, cinematic and surreal songs - filled with an exceptional variety of colors and textures - so gripping that nothing can compete with their compelling lyrics and unforgettably melodies - except, of course - Davis' incredible voice.

  • '80s new wave diva returns with hard-edged rock sound! Awesome!
    author: Jody

This CD blows me away! I bought it out of curiosity, expecting music similar to what Martha Davis did in the '80s with the Motels, and, boy, was I off base! This is one ROCKING album. Very edgy and angry, yet it has a strong heartfelt quality surging through all of it. Let's hope there are more spectacular albums on the way from Martha Davis!

  • like a visit from an old friend, so the story goes...
    author: todd rubacka

hearing martha davis' new cd was like a visit from a dear old friend! Reviewer: todd Listening to 'So the Story Goes' was like seeing a dear , lost, old friend walk thru my back door and into my life again! In 2003 I drove from Ma. to Conn. to see martha play live for free at the mohegan sun. I got to meet Martha after the show and she was 'the bomb' I told her then how much I loved her 'soap opera' rock of the 80s since i was 16 and how the new tunes[many of which are on so the story goes] Rocked! Now that I heard the cd itself...Martha, I thank u for the direct, here's the way it is lyrics and your 'torch song', tender vocals...'torture me' is amazing ,as is 'angel' and really the whole cd is a showcase of this lady's skill and magic! Welcome Back Martha, its been worth the wait please come see us here in ma. soon! rock on, Todd

  • When Restraints Get removed...
    author: Jeff

Thank you Martha! A CD free of all the slick production and tightly wound commercial obligation. This work exudes freedom and originality. From the heart it comes earthereal and ballsy... You will find your self over and over, needing to play it just one more time.

  • That smokey silky pouty voice is back again!
    author: Brett

Great to finally hear Martha Davis back in rare form. Crazy is by far the best track on this disc, but I really love the whole thing. There are some artists who know how to write a good song and sing them perfectly. Martha is one of those artist!

  • Absolutely Awesome...
    author: Bambiltc

Martha's voice and music style on this CD remind me of what I loved about The Motels and that Martha was, indeed, The Motels!!!

  • Great to hear new material!
    author: James Gillham

Stark, strong, and unflinchingly honest, this CD gives the listener a glimpse of Martha Davis' viewpoint on life and love. It's a viewpoint that isn't at all optimistic, but in the end, what can you do? To live and love is why we're here.

  • Great, angel is exceeeeellllllent

    Keep it Going

  • Enjoyed Native American Rhythms and Similarity to Past Musical Partners
    author: Jack Whitesell, Jr.

My first reaction to As the Story Goes is that the feel of the CD is very similar to the feel of Flesh and Blood by Michael Goodroe, Bass Player from The Motels during their most commerically successful period - not so much in the words, but in style of music and arrangements. My next reaction was pleasure at the frequent and heavy use of Native American Rhythms, even Martha Davis's use of her voice in ways similar to some Native American chants. Also use of bass and percussion in Where Are You Now creates a sense of a distant place, which adds to the atmosphere of the words, similar to the feel in the theme songs to the movies Hatari or Lawrence of Arabia, although of a different nature than rhythms in this CD. Most enjoyable or intriguing in both music and words Where Are You Now, Crazy, Torture Me, Angel, and True Love. True to Davis's "Music Noir" tradition, even her "happy song," Green Valley, sounds a little on the down side, due to the selection of key and singing style, choice of direction of the notes in the musical phrasing. Finally, I find the frequest use of terms relating to thin blades and cutting iin more thatn one song interesting. I find myself wanting to ask Ms. Davis when she first became a masochist, while hoping she really isn't.

  • Well worth the 15 year wait!!!
    author: kc

Well worth the 15 year wait.I bought the CD in December and its still the only one I listen to. Martha's the best and that's all there is to it!!

  • Martha is a brilliant writer and wow ...that voice.
    author: Donald Davis

Many times when an artist is out of the music scene for a while and return, you hear something missing. Not here with Martha's new CD. Her writing has not wained a bit, and her voice is as powerful as ever. Thank you for this album. It was a long time in wait for this fan

  • One Summer
    author: DC Project

Great Music, Great Sound, Been a long time since one summer! Great to see you back! This cd is Great!

  • author: Ben

...So The Story Goes is a long awaited and thoroughly satisfying work from an artist who has been one of my favorites from the gitgo. The words and the music are classic Martha Davis but with a maturity and wisdom that fits the current time. If you liked her work with the Motels and on Policy you will not be disappointed and may even play the bits and bytes off this disc. Way to go Martha and keep it coming.

  • Great song variety, excellent writing, favorite was "Into Your Arms".
    author: Dan Fuller

Excellent music and very thoughtful, insightful, writing. Theres a song in here for everybody with several songs that, in a perfect world, would get heavy airplay. Into Your Arms, So The Story Goes, Torture Me and Green Valley would be my picks.

  • Martha Davis combines Mazzy Star's tenderness and mystery with Melissa Etheridge
    author: Wendy Hoenkamp

This was the first cd I ever heard by Martha Davis. If I would compare her to other musicians, I'd say she is like a female Chris Isaak, but with more power than pitty, a mature Mazzy Star, that she has Melissa Etheridges raw power, and Marianne Faithfulls darkness.

  • Songs somtimes fragile, sometimes powerful
    author: Albrecht Schempp

After the 5 Track EP U.S of Dismay from 2001 and the Acoustic 8 Track CD from 2003 Martha Davis is now back with a brilliant new Album. 12 great Songs sometimes fragile and sometimes powerful & passionate, Songs which brings you in a special mood only Martha Davis Songs can do. I was very greedy of listen to the first Motels Album in 1979, the same feeling i have some weeks ago listen to So The Story Goes !

  • Great Voice, great songwriting and great music!
    author: Debbi

I thought it was fantastic! Her voice is unique and she is a very good songwriter. Her songs told a story and I guess that is what a storyteller does and she did very well expressing it. The instrumentation was good as well. I hope she does another CD.

  • The story goes very well.......
    author: Chris

12 jewels. hewn from deep down, but cut to perfection. waiting for the next story already....

  • Music to your ears!
    author: Karen Houde

  • WHAT A WONDERFUL CD! MARTHA HAS NEVER SOUNDED BETTER!!!
    author: KIRK ESTERBY

MARTHA IS AT THE TOP OF HER GAME. HER VOICE IS INCREDIBLE!

  • New Motels music at last!
    author: Randy Forde

For anyone who found the Motels in the eighties to be the antidote to the popular music of that decade, this CD will certainly emind them why they felt that way. Martha Davis has produced an exceptional CD with all the dark & quircky lyrics of the Motels at their best. I just hope she doesn't wait another 20 years to do another. Thank you, Martha.

  • author: Doug Kerr

  • Sultry Martha does it again!
    author: Dan T

Well worth the wait, Martha delivers it in style. Seeing some of these songs live at the Knitting Factory in NYC in August a few years back makes the magic come alive once again. Favorite track... Green Valley. Playful, soulfull, full of angst these tracks deliver in Martha's inimitable style. Come back to NYC!

  • Let's not wait this long again!!!!!!
    author: Keith from Georgia!

"...So The Story Goes" is the answer to my dreams - a new CD from Martha!!!! She's in fine form, you can tell from the first notes. My favorite cut is "True Love", but it tends to change daily. I'm ready for more right now!!!!

This album just plain ROCKS! It's as good or better than her previous work, and that really says sommthing.

  • Time To Check In With Martha Davis...
    author: Vince on Long Island

Having loved everything by The Motels and Martha Davis' fabulous solo debut, "Policy", I was thrilled to learn of "...And So The Story Goes". I had the good fortune to catch Martha and her new Motels on a shared bill with 10,000 Maniacs here on Long Island two summers ago. That was my first taste of the new material - and it translated so well to the live stage that I couldn't wait until these tracks were recorded. The new CD was well worth the wait! Martha's songwriting has never been better - like fine wine, it just gets better with age. Her songs speak of universal themes and the music style enhances the mood of each track - whether that be dark and brooding, enraged, or heartbroken and longing. The standout track on this disc is hands-down "Torture Me" a kick-ass mid-tempo rocker filled with raw emotion. Martha's vocals have remained strong and retained that slightly off-kilter edge that made early Motels tracks so unique and endearing to fans. She grits and growls with newfound passion on some tracks, while her trademark lovely voice (best captured years ago on vintage tracks like "Only The Lonely") stands out on others. Indeed, Martha possesses such a unique vocal niche in the modern music landscape, that my only criticism (really more of a wish list!) is that I would have loved to see one or two cover versions of other artists' songs to see what she could do with them. After tasting her version of "Take My Breath Away" on "Anthologyland", I'm breathless myself for some covers. Are you an old fan of The Motels and the gifted vocalist Martha Davis? Then run (don't walk!) to grab a copy of "...And So The Story Goes". Here's hoping that this story goes on...and on...and on!

  • FINALLY! the new CD from Martha DAvis proves well worth the wait
    author: charles in new orleans

I've waited since 1987's "Policy" for new music from Martha and I'm pleased to say she has delivered the goods with sound that is raw and powerful. Songs like "Torture Me" & "Into your Arms" capture what made me love the Motels in the first place: dark & moody one minute- sweet and dreamy the next! This is a true return to form! Buy it!

  • Long time - well worth the wait
    author: Gavin

Like Randy, I have waited 17 years to hear a new Martha Davis CD - her last - Policy - was a classic. While I think the first 4 songs on Policy were different from Martha's main stream music I loved them. However this CD is fantastic have listened to it several times now and my favourite songs are Where are you now and By the fire. I would have loved to have a recorded copy of the song Bad Feeling which I have heard her sing on stage so hopefully Martha will put that on her next CD!!! Heres hoping. Great to have you back Martha!!

  • Finally, a wonderful new CD from Martha Davis.
    author: Randy Simcox

"So The Story Goes" is an album I've been waiting for many years to hear. Songs like Sweet Love and Crazy harken back to the raw rock days of the Motels 1979 debut album; and while Martha Davis has performed the songs Torture Me, Angel and True Love on stage they had never been burned onto disk... until now! Every time I saw them in concert I hoped that one day a new album would be made. It finally has, and it ROCKS!

  • honesty, talented and touching my soul
