notes

Jim fouraat wrote for the Village Voice Annual Critics Poll 2005:

THE MOST DANGEROUS ARTIST OF THE YEAR: Mark Weigle has delivered the most dangerous and courageous album of the year. SoulSex is a two-disk album. On disk 1, Wrestling the Angel, he once again proves himself as accomplished a songwriter as the late Mickey Newbury. He sings in as voice as butch sweet as Vince Gill. On disk 2Versatile, he puts gay sex front and center. The kind of sex that drives Jon Steward writers to make funny but depersonalizing jokes and comedians in movies like The Aristocrats try to one up each other on the outrageousness of anal penetration. Weigle's songs celebrate cock-sucking, boot licking, and penis and asshole worship that would make Ginsberg, Whitman, Vidal and Baldwin fully tumescent. Weigle delivers with voracious passion and a glutinous sense of joy that is starkly missing from pornographic renderings of gay sexuality. Sadly Mark Weigle has a bushel of recorded romantic country, gay, love songs that should have been the soundtrack of Brokeback Mountain and that would have made all the little boys and girls wet with tears, if anyone had ever heard them. He is not only a gay musical treasure but also a country icon waiting to be discovered by the world.

"Wrestling the Angel" changed my life. Versatile made me laugh and think. Indeed Mark is a National Treasure!!! Buy this CD, send it to all your friends out in the boonies that haven't yet discovered Mark. They remember you forever if you do. All I can say is, Mark's music is a soul shaking experience, I really won't ever be the same, all for the better. I wish we all able to link, love and soul and sex into one wonderful experience. Seems we would all be better off. Thank you, Mark

I love this guy. He has a great voice, beautiful eyes and wonderful smile. The only problem is I can't stare at the CD cover while I drive! Buy the album and you will not be disappointed.

This is an excellent album - I am so glad there are men out there singing about living/loving as a gay male. It's about time. Thanks

  • Love the Versatile CD
    author: Robert Ross

I love the Versatile CD! I enjoy almost every song on the CD. Five Good Peterbilts is my favorite song from this album. I am now as wild about Wrestling the Angel although I still liked two of the songs. But the Versatile CD made it worthwile to me. Looking forward to more music by Mark Weigle.

  • This set blew me away!
    author: tommyboy

Soul Sex is a beautiful album - it consists of two albums, Wrestling the Angel and Versitile. Wrestling the Angel has many haunting and beautiful lyrics. “Little Boy” is a real heart breaker. “Blessing, with Tom Spanbauer” where Mark sings about the blessing of “our” unions is a triumph and should be our anthem. “Victim” really affected me - I can‘t help but think of so many of a certain young age that probably find themselves in a similar situation. “Why Not Fly” could be a real tragic song, “Tires and Gasoline” about Billy Jack Gaither is one of my favorites because Billy Jack didn’t get the attention he deserved - but I think of him frequently especially on the anniversary of his death. I’m sure you’ll feel the same about this set as I have. Versatile is not something that EVERYONE could listen to, but the lyrics are very erotic (and, to me, very liberating) and brought many smiles of pleasure to my face.

  • WOW!
    author: Erin Stevenson

Not only does Mark expand and refine his lyrical style and strike chords of the soul we all identify with, and touch those simmering passions just beneath our skin, he proves he can be just as home with more down-to-earth, in-your face songs that are raw, unsparing and just as evocative-only these songs touch the edgy, primal part of our selves. Listening to the two discs back to back is hard to do-you really are pulled from one emotional universe to another-yet are reminded that both exist in us simultaneously. Brilliant Album period.

  • Sacred vs. Profane
    author: Joe R.

Ever since I was a little boy, I've struggled with my conflicting attractions to both the sacred and the profane. Mark Weigle has expressed my life in his CD, "Wrestling the Angel/Versatile." I'm either feeling profanely sacred, or sacredly profane. Either way, I'm happy!

  • The Best!!!!!
    author: Joel

Not only did the lyrics make me pop my first musically inspired wood.... the music is great!! From raunchy fun, to open, soul searching... this is a great album. I can't wait until the next one comes out!!! I'm in love with Mark Weigle.

  • Still going strong!
    author: Bob Granger

I have been a fan since I discovered you at The Open Book in Sacramento. You are still going strong, and Versatile proves this!! I can't wait to see you perform in person again! Loved Versatile the best, but the whole 2-disc set is great. Give us more like this on the next CD!

  • SWEET.... SEXY... AND NAUGHY...--> LOVED IT!
    author: Robb McDonnell

Enjoyed all the songs and do believe Mark is totally awesome!!! Actaully much better than the mainstream country/folk singers .... Thanks for sharing your talent Mark!!

  • After the loss of my partner I hear words affirming my life.
    author: Ron

After losing a lover to death after nearly 40 years I had given up ever having love again. Songs like: "I Love Horses," "As Long A You Love Me," "Little Boy," "Ones Who Came To Heal" and especially "Across The Miles" have opened my heart to love again. Mark's voice and words are not only soothing but healing.

  • Love the CD
    author: Jeffrey Newhouse

I loved the CD. Mark has an excellent sense of humor, and a really good voice.

  • Not at all what I expected, I loved it.
    author: Steve

I loved this album, I was blown away by the erotic nature of some of the songs. I like that Mark sings about the way it really is, I want more.

  • 'Versatile' has knocked my socks off or should I say pants off.
    author: Chris VonTanner

Mr. Weigle has been one of my favoirte gay singer/songwriters for quite some time now and I didn't think he could get much better....'Versatile' has knocked my socks off or should I say pants off. Mark you are a top notch cocksucker and I love you for it!

  • It speaks to me! Mark, I am so glad you are out there!
    author: Benjamin King

I listen to it in the truck all the time. This is a great CD for people who appreciate all types of music. I listen to everything from Deep House to Waylon Jennings. Soul Sex is a delicious mix of music genres with country music overtones and lyrics that speak unapologetically to the proud, fringe gay American male. I am so glad you're out there Mark. Thank you and look forward to owning all your CD's!

  • Great! Raunchy! Inspiring!
    author: Michael Howard

My first introduction to Mark and I am hooked!

  • Another GREAT collection from Mark!
    author: Kevin

Here is another great set of songs from Mark Weigle. Great depictions from all areas of gay life! A must have for everyone!

  • Sexy, Seductive, Hilarious & Raunchy
    author: Tori Fixx

I grew tired of playing the song snippets on CD Baby so I had no choice but to purchase the CD and I love it. It's a great blend of many genres and the songs are great. As usual, Mark's voice is very sexy and his lyrics will seduce any listener. This CD has made me a bigger fan than I already was and I'm now completely sprung for this Versitile Cowboy with a great sense of humor.

  • As wonderful as all the preceding CDs
    author: Gregg Humerickhouse

Disk 1 (Wrestling the Angel) is comparable to Mark's previous CDs, with a combination of soul, humor, and satire. Disk 2 (Versatile) is unapologetically smutty, and I can't hear it often enough. I know many of the words to both CDs by heart now, and I've always been excited and happy when Mark releases a new CD. Another release, right on the Mark.

  • another great album!
    author: David Nickell

This is another great Mark Weigle album...I highly recommend it.

  • Great, Just like his other albums
    author: Craig Murdock

As usual Mark has taken his musical subjects straight forward without worrying about political correctness or censoring his choice of words. The songs are very meaningful and express topics that any honest gay man can relate to. I just wish he were on my lap singing one of the songs to me like he did a couple of years ago here in Tucson at our OUTberfest.

  • I am so proud that Mark is one of us, this is good shit, he ranks tops.
    author: Don Craddock

I had never heard of Mark before I saw the ad in the Advocate for this album. Mark is one helluva talented singer, songwriter. His songs are soulful, unapologetic, sexual, and then there are the pure political songs. Wow, what a talent. And he is damned handsome to boot. Wishing I was the one having some soul sex with him.

  • MESMERIZING!
    author: Don (gay consumer)

First I played Versatile, while reading the very handy sheet with printed lyrics (THANK YOU!). My jaw fell open as I was just astounded at the sheer BALLS of it all! This is a great party cd to have your guests howling! But what is constantly playing now on my cd is Wrestling the Angel which has some of the most hypnotic music I've heard in a long while. Heartbreaking and heartfelt, it is magical and bears hearing over again and again! And a big Woof to Mark!

  • Unapologetically Gay!!
    author: bill d

Wow!! What a diverse, sensitive, raunchy (in the best sense of the word), introspective, proud collection of music! Mark Weigle's unapologetic themes and lyrics about being a proud gay man are brilliant to hear in the sometimes gender neutral world of popular music. Thank you, Mark, for being so open and honest and sharing your life and music with us.

  • My first time hearing Mark's voice and it was a pleasant discovery !
    author: Steve

Mark’s vocals on this CD are truly a wonderful mix of sounds and styles and as you listen to him sing his songs you are immersed into a gay man’s social-psycho and sexual being………… And if you’re a gay man, it is an affirming feeling.

  • Awesome Cd
    author: Tim

I heard "Nasty Bizness" on Sirius Out Q , I had only hear bits and pieces of the song , until I heard the entire song. Purchased the album , and enjoy both CD's Wide range of music , from country , dance , to folk . AWESOME!!!!!

  • One of the best from one of the best..
author: Taylor Cage, "QueerWaves" 91.7fm KOOP Austin TX

Mark Weigle is an icon on the queer/men's music scene, and this new release (these new releases?) sets the bar. From folk to country to arena rock--arena rock?!?--you'll find Mark's voice wrapped around it here. Mark aims for the head, the heart, and points south, and he hits them all with skill and passion. This is one of the must-haves of 2005..

  • great website and music
    author: Danny

    awesome cd,original music

  • author: Jim e Sparkle Pants

Mark Weigle's SOULSEX(Wrestling the Angel/Versatile) is one of the best CDs I've come across in years! It's a genuine relief to the open minded listener, both in terms of range of musical styles(e.g. crossing folk, country, dancefloor, balls to the walls rock n roll...), as well as the content of the lyrics. I've long been a fan of Mark's music, but this CD expands it out to a whole new dimension. It's a bold, risk taking, honest work of art that doesn't water itself down trying to be more commercially accessible. Unlike so many queer artists who never explicitly express their own sexual desires(and those of their communities) in their music, Mark puts it all out there and blends it with a loving heart and spiritual perspective. On a CD this important, it's hard to pick favorites, but some of mine are White Scarves on Thursdays( a great song about the Las Madres movement in Argentina), Soulsex Disclosure/Essence, And I Love Horses, Blessing, Five Good Peterbilts, Ben's Whip and Picnic Tables. This CD is a rare gem!

  • A CD that grows on you!
    author: Jack MacDonald-hIlton

This CD took a couple of listens. For whatever reason the first time that I heard it I didn't really like it. I've since listened to it a couple of times & it ranks right up there w/Mark's others as a favorite. Empowerment, the joy of man to man sex, love, tricking, the guilty pleasures of anonymous sex. That's all on Soul Sex. Versatile embarassed me at first, but then I grew to enjoy it. I can be quite raunchy & Mark's raunchy & liberating lyrics struck the right chord. Especially his unabashed sexuality. I highly recommend you buy it.

  • SoulSex is 28 tracks of proudly gay, life-shaking entertainment.
author: John Frame (for Queer Radio on 4ZZZ Brisbane)

The best way to enjoy Mark Weigle CD is to sleep with it for a few nights – drifting off after taking in poignant and beautiful music and waking up occasionally to amazing stories in song. "Inspirational" is too small a word - but "highly original and thoroughly entertaining" are right on the money. “SoulSex” is another superb sounding recording – continuing the Mark’s own high standard of attention to detail in arrangement and production - comparable in finesse to fellow gay songsmith and soundcraftsman, Rufus Wainwright. "How I See You" is a fine start and acts as an introduction to the personal and introspective nature of the rest of the songs on CD1 “Wrestling The Angel”. Nothing is held back – the dialogue is 100% honest. For example: "And I Love Horses" is just about the most ideal ode to what a gay man would really love about country life. “Why Not Fly” deals with suicide by challenging us to choose an self-empowered, purposeful life instead. Mark gives us a range of songs that make an ideal resource for a gay radio program – but as a man of the real world he does not limit himself to “gay” topics. “Blatant and beautiful” could describe many tracks on “SoulSex” – including the title track. On CD2 “Versatile”, Mark relives his youthful heavy metal band obsession with Judas Priest (he always knew that Rob Halford just had to be gay) - we’re taken for a high velocity pillion ride, driven by Mark’s very butch voice, in “Desert Plains”. It’s every bit as powerful as the original. SoulSex is 28 tracks of proudly gay, life-shaking entertainment.

  • Another Fantastic Album
    author: Andy D

Another great effort by one of my favorite artists. Mark eloquently presents everything from love to bears to rim jobs. From the light-hearted to the tragedy turned to personal growth it's all here in lyrics that require more than a casual listen to appreciate. Thanks Mark - can't wait for the next collection.

  • Mark is hot-hot-hot!
    author: Marty

Mark Weigle is hot and on the money in this new CD set! "Wrestling the Angel" is poignant, introspective, and honest...like much of Mark's writings. "Versatile" is a hot and horny collection, just how we all imagined Mark in our most priapic fantasies! AMEN - Praise Jesus!!
