CALABASH BLUES features 7 new songs alongside 6 tracks from the Nightbird* and Timbuktoubab** albums: all original Blues-based songs, including tributes to Blues legends Skip James and Howlin Wolf, with each song featuring the traditional sound and rhythms of the calabash, recorded by Malian master musicians at the source of the ancient roots of Blues music.
Featuring Calabash master Hamma Sankare, who played Calabash on Grammy-winning Malian Bluesman ALI FARKA TOURE's legendary albums and tours.
* "A vital mix of the Mississippi Delta and Mali, a cultural exchange of haunting beauty and mystery."

** "haunting music that conjures the very soul of the Sahara. James evokes the spirit of the blues in these tracks, connecting with a vibe that's as ancient as Timbuktu itself."

After watch the show about Mr.James we purchased this cd to put in our jute box at our private club (bar)so others could enjoy this great sound. I have since given the website to three people who want to also purchase this cd. I'm sure more will follow.

this is magical stuff. i bought the album after hearing only one song, & the whole set blew me away....i turned the volume up track after track so i could be inside these gorgeous sounds - they are of the earth, spiritual, potently laidback & even funky. what a powerful gift from mr. james.
Mesmerizing, "soulfull", best describes these spiritually blistering tracks...UM
author: J.T. LogsdonAmazing talent, James defines originality crossed with a massive dose of spiritualizm. The rythms are hot and dirty....best in recent memory!!! JT Logsdon

Markus has blown us away from day one, from the first time we laid ears upon his "Nightbird" album and over and over again with his albums, "Where You Wanna Be" and "Timbuktoubab." It's not every day that an artist astounds us so consistently. His unforgettable, emotional mix of Malian music with deep, acoustic blues is not only unprecedented but nothing short of genius. As Markus explores different characters and qualities in his voice in "Calabash Blues," as well as including 6 tracks from his previous albums, the contrast between the dark and the light is only greater and more mesmerizing. Cotinuing on with the stunning calabash playing of Hamma Sankare, this new addition is one more way to appreciate the beauty of this imaginative stylistic and cultural collaboration.
