notes

To my friends with a Finnish backround and to those who love music.
Please let me share with you the timeless beauty of the folksongs by some of The Greatest Finnish Composers.

The most well known is Finlandia-hymni by Jean Sibelius. This sinfonic poem was born 1899.

Oi muistatko viela sen virren (Do you still remember that hymn) was written by Eino Leino (1878-1926). He wrote the first verse most likely to his mother while 16 years old 1895.Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924) composed it .The song was published 1913.

Lapsuuden toverille (To the childhoods friend) was marked to memory by P.J.Hannikainen while he heard a farm worker sing it.

Sunnuntaiaamuna (On Sunday morning) is the most well known duetto and was composed by Hjalmar Backman (1882-1935) who was an organist and a music teacher in Aleksanteri’s Church of Tampere at the time!

Oravan pesa ( A Squarrells nest) is a children’s song by P.J. Hannikainen.

Taivas on sininen ja valkoinen (The sky is blue and white) was marked to memory by Karl Collan while he traveled in Liperi, Finland. He published the song 1854 in his collection of Valituita Suomalaisia Kansan-lauluja.

Thank you.
