Swing, R&B, sambas, ballads - Original jazz-pop songs by singer-pianist Marilyn Harris: "...if you're into Steely Dan or Michael Franks, Marilyn Harris fits right into the groove and is a strong singer to boot." Jerome Wilson, Cadence Magazine

notes

Singer-songwriter-arranger-pianist Marilyn Harris is an artist whose talents have graced not only her own recordings, but a wide variety of other artists' work including Jim Brickman, Bette Midler, Lola Falana, Donna McKechnie, hit songwriter Allee Willis, polka queen Nancy Seibert, cabaret artists John Trones and Alan Safier, and new age flutist Ellie Lai, as well as jazz vocalists Anne Marie Moss, Jackie Paris, Judi Silvano and Diane Hubka.

After studying composition with Hale Smith at UConn and film scoring with Ray Wright and Manny Albam at Eastman School of Music, Marilyn worked extensively with jazz arranger Gil Evans, and studied piano with Richard Tee and Rodgers Grant. She sang, arranged and produced music for commercials (Amoco, McDonald's, Kraft, Kellogg's, United Airlines, etc.). She's composed, performed and produced over 200 music cues for ABC-TV's "General Hospital", scored episodes of the animated "Flintstone Kids", and provided original music scores and themes for such diverse projects as BBC-5's hit radio drama "Milford-Haven, U.S.A." (Great Britain), "Yogurt Variations" for the New Britain Symphony Orchestra, the theatrical play "Sea Marks" and the audio book music scores to "The Hidden Legacy", "Stickeen", and the recently released "Travels In Alaska". Marilyn has also had an original song (featuring Marilyn's lyrics) in the Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation of "My Sister's Keeper" on CBS-TV. Most recently her original song "Let's Get Together Tonight" is featured in the end titles of the film "T For Terrorist".

Marilyn's first CD release "Between the Lines" (Wrightwood Records #WRCD-1508) highlights her experiences as singer, songwriter, arranger and producer. It features world-renowned musicians such as guitarist Georg Wadenius (Blood, Sweat & Tears), bassist Steve Rodby (Pat Metheny Group), percussionist/drummer Mark Walker (Paquito D'Rivera & Oregon), jazz trumpeters Bobby Lewis and Ron Friedman, saxophonist Steve Eisen (Styx), and Sinatra band members Mike Smith and Ron Kolber.

Marilyn Harris' music has been compared to Steely Dan and Michael Franks and her voice to Carole King and Billie Holiday. In the musical mix of artists today, it may be more appropriate to describe her eclectic and intricate sound and velvety voice as a mix of singing legend Carly Simon and Basia. With songs such as the CD opener "Only You" and the rich "Keeping an Open Heart," Harris shows she has true staying power and talent. Recorded over a ten-year period but with a sound that's timeless, this is a sensuous yet lively album containing a wide range of songs. From the joy-filled "When I See Your Face" to the melancholy "Coney Island" (a song with imagery and sounds that make the listener feel they are actually there), Harris has a talent for hitting the highs and lows of the human condition. Other standout tracks include "Get It Up," an exquisite, almost breezy song, and the rapt "What I See In You". Joined by a variety of well-known and respected musicians such as guitarist George Wadenius (Blood, Sweat & Tears), bassist Steve Rodby (Pat Metheny Group), saxophonist Steve Eisen (Styx), and Sinatra band members Mike Smith and Ron Kolber, Between the Lines is a must have for the modern music connoisseur.
