classical / flamenco guitarist, singer, dancer, and conductor

Marija Temo, referred to as a "triple threat" performer, is broadly recognized as a classical / flamenco guitarist, flamenco singer / dancer, and conductor. Her unique specialty is combining all of her talents in a single performance, creating a unique crossover between flamenco and classical music and most recently pop music.

2001 season highlights included: A premier of a new guitar concerto, Concierto del Fuego (Concerto of Fire) written for Ms. Temo. Soundboard, Guitar Foundation of America, a national guitar magazine, stated, it is the "Guitar Concerto of the Century" and a review from The Plain Dealer- Cleveland, Ohio praised, "As an artist, Ms. Temo is precise, brilliant and supremely fiery in her playing. The concerto offered her ample opportunity to display both her flamenco and classical chops, as well as her creativity in the complex cadenza she devised for the first movement."
Other 2001 highlights included Ms. Temo's one woman performance and arrangement of Manuel de Falla's "Canciones Populares" for orchestra, flamenco guitar, and song; several performances of J. Rodrigo's guitar concerto, "Concierto de Aranjuez"; performances of flamenco song and dance to de Falla's "El Amor Brujo Suite"; numerous Solo concerts involving her skills as a classical and flamenco guitarist, singer and dancer, a program of the poetry of Garcia Lorca with flamenco guitar and singing accompaniment entitled, "Flamenco and Lorca"; performances for children, entitled, "Flamenco Amazement"; on Cleveland and Maryland Public Television, Ms. Temo was featured on PBS specials showcasing her talents, and for the seventh consecutive year, she taught for the International Festival Flamenco at the University of New Mexico, presenting her unique class on Flamenco Communication, which explores the interaction among flamenco guitarists, singers, and dancers. 2001 engagements included performances with The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, The Florida Orchestra, Solo Concerts at the Blossom Music Festival, Strathmore Hall- Music in the Mansion Series, and the Harmony Hall Concert Series.
Her most recent awards include a Governor's Citation from the Governor of The State of Maryland in honor of being selected for the 2000 Maryland State Arts Council's Individual Artist Award in Solo Instrumental Performance, an Alumni - Achievement award from Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music in Berea, Ohio, and an induction into the Revere High School Hall of Fame.

Television and radio critics have lauded Ms. Temo for being "one of the few female solo flamenco guitarists in the world," often refer to her as "Multi -Talented Marija," and state, "Challenging the rules of traditional flamenco." "She continues to break new ground in other ways." "Her intelligence, natural intuitive ability combined with a passion and love of music places her among those exceptional interpreters of our time."

Highlight concerts include the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in her own (One Woman Children Series), entitled "Multi-Talented Marija", which involved all her talents of guitar, song, dance, conducting, including elaborate audience participation and narration of her entire all Spanish program; Seattle, Washington, where she was featured in her own arrangement of de Falla's, "El Amor Brujo" for violin, piano, guitar, and song; New York, where she composed, arranged, and performed the music for the production of Lorca's play, "Blood Wedding," and concerning Ms. Temo's flamenco and pop crossover, she was an opening act for "La India" in a Latin Festival in New York. Ms.Temo has been a featured artist with several symphony orchestras and in solo concert series throughout the US. and Canada.

Ms. Temo has performed for: The Spanish Ambassador, Don Jaime de Ojeda; the Prince of Spain; Vice President, Al Gore; Mayor A. Shoji of Tateyama, Japan; the Russian Ambassador; the Princess of Thailand; the Spanish Consul; Jose Greco. She has performed with: the Alberta and Cleveland Ballet; Lola Greco, the 1997 leading Spanish Classical dancer of the National Ballet of Spain; Teo Morca, whom she has performed with for over 10 years and was invited to represent the US. in the first Flamenco Festival in Tateyama, Japan; Manolo Leiva; Sara de Luis; Juan Serrano; Oscar Lopez; Paco Pena; Manolo Segura; La Conja; Pedro Cortez; Roberto Castellon; Gloria de Jerez; Chuscales; Omayra Amaya; Joaquin Encinias; Jose Fernandez; Antonio Vargas; and the Carlota Spanish Dance Co.

A sought after teacher, Ms. Temo is a former faculty member of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, the Preparatory, where she founded the Flamenco Guitar Program. She has been a regular guest teacher for the International Flamenco Festival at The University of New Mexico and is contracted abroad to teach master classes. Ms. Temo received her Masters degree from the Peabody Conservatory of Music, under Manuel Barrueco, and her Bachelors degree from The Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music, under Loris Chobanian.     The songs are upbeat and interesting to listen to. Hauntingly beautiful love songs. Sung and played w/heartfelt emotion. They resonate in your head and heart for days and days. A great addition to any musical collection; a must have.
