Marcelo has been living in the US for more than a decade, but his connections to the sounds of Brazilian music are far from being broken. Instead, his performances allowed him to develop his own interpretation of a variety of Brazilian rhythms, while sharing his music with audiences in Rochester, NY.
His interest for the guitar started as a teenager and Marcelo taught himself how to play the instrument, in his own “upside-down” way of holding it (yes, he is a lefty). As soon as the first chords were conquered, he started writing his first songs. Music has always been his most lively passion and songwriting soon became his most important creative outlet.
Marcelo’s strongest influences include Brazilian composers/musicians such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Djavan and Joao Gilberto, as well as The Beatles, Sting, The Cure, Stevie Wonder and many other popular bands and artists from different parts of the world. His interpretations combine touches from a variety of styles, along with his personal sprinkles of occasional dissonance, based on his favorite Brazilian style: the Bossa Nova.
In October of 2005, Marcelo initiated another attempt to bring one of his life-long dreams to reality, which was the recording of his first CD. With the learnings from previous attempts – and there were several – this one turned out to be very successful. Including the participation of a team of outstanding musicians and friends, Marcelo’s debut album, titled “Mind The Music”, was recorded at GFI Productions, in Ontario, NY, with sound engineer Mark Gifford. The studio work was completed in September of 2006 and the final product is now available. Mind The Music contains 11 tracks written and arranged by Marcelo, where he performs all the vocals and acoustic guitar tracks. The gamut of songs includes ballads, Brazilian beats, Pop, Rock and Jazz elements, all blended together into Marcelo’s understanding of the world around and inside him, expressed through his sounds and words.

    This is an amazing compilation of songs – the kind that you fall more & more in love with each time you listen to it. You discover different layers in the music and find new meaning in the lyrics that you didn’t realize before making this CD timeless. It’s incredible that this artist, a Brazilian immigrant to the United States, who has never had any formal training in music theory, can be a poet in 3 different languages: English, Portuguese, and the language of melody. My personal favorites: “The Street Inside of Me” – a moving song about a common human drive; about needing to find direction, realizing your dreams and then making them happen. It’s got a beat and energy that is very instinctive. “Midon” - great uplifting rhythm with brazilian influence and words like "kiss a million souls a day"...love it! “Singing Alone” – breathtaking melancholic tunes combined again with inspirational poetic lyrics that pull at just the right emotional strings in your heart and soul. It brought me to a familiar place in my past; a place that everyone at some point has been and therefore can relate to. Overall, an astonishing debut CD! Looking forward to the next!

    MIND the MUSIC brings a very interesting kind of cool jazz and Brazilian groove. The lyrics are poems that are easy to sing along and to remember. For those who are tired of the same old type of songs that play on the radio, MIND THE MUSIC is refreshingly different!     Mind the Music is a wonderful CD that I very much enjoy. The songs are very creative and I easily could relate the lyrics. I enjoyed the combination of the English songs and Portuguese songs. I especially love Singing Alone and Deju Vu. My 18 and 16 year old daughters even enjoyed Marcelo CD so much that they put it on their Ipods. I am looking forward to seeing you live in concert.   • Brilliantly Joyful - A Trip Into Marcelo's Talent

    This CD is one of those CDs that you listen to and images of memories come to mind. This trip is not only into my past in Kansas but mostly into Marcelo's talents. The eclectically brilliancy of Marcelo Guimaraes ranges from Bossa Nova to The Beatles in a joyful mix of rock and Marisa Monte style of presentation. He is not only easy to listen to but surprising with each note, since their is a perfect mix of English and his native Portuguese in his song selection. In his first album, Marcelo has over 2/3rds of it in English and I believe this made the album complete. The few Portuguese songs he sings were beautifully sung in the best tones of his traditional MPB. Congratulations, you really did it. I have to admit, I had tears in my eyes as I was listening to it. 2 thumbs up!!! Alex...

    MIND the MUSIC brings an interesting mix of styles- upbeat pop tunes, cool jazz, Brazilian groove, and a flowing instrumental. Marcelo has given us a collection of well-crafted, inspiring songs that defy one of the song titles (Singing Alone). Once you hear the CD, Marcelo won’t be singing alone because you will be compelled to sing along too. I think you will find this music like I did, refreshingly different!
