notes

"Merely by turning his body he switches from Katmandu to Kingston..." - Frankfurter Rundschau

Master percussionist, musical nomad, Marc Anderson has long been associated with Steve Tibbetts and his brand of elegant world fusion. Rooted in traditions from warmer places than his Minnesota home, Anderson the composer brings to this new CD a gentle and intimate personality; a loving tribute to his grandmother, Ruby.

In addition to Marc's own playing on berimbau, mbira, steel drums and African drums, Ruby features an all-star cast of global musicians including: Barb Cohen, vocals; Laura Mackenzie, bagpipes; Dean Magraw, guitar, Sowah Mensa, water drums; Peter Ostroushko, fiddles; and Enrique Toussaint, bass. The Enhanced CD also features a music video and an interactive game where you too can play with Marc's wild collection of instruments at the touch of a mouse.

Marc Anderson: African drums, voice, guitar, mbira, steel drum, dumbek, frame drums, sampled and tape source sounds, berimbau, kantele, tuned gongs, clay pots, percussion

Bruce Henry: vocals

  • This CD started and I thought should improve

I liked what he did on a CD called NORTHERN SONG ,however this CD actualy improves the further it goes on ,it's a bit wobbly in a few places but still good.

  • Fantastic rhythmic impulses: inventive - invigorating - intoxicating!!!
    author: Mr. Curt

It's been almost a decade since Marc Anderson's last CD, "Timefish", which was a tremendous mix of varied percussion influences and techniques. This new CD, "Ruby", ups the ante even more. Deep trance patterns (low-drums/clay pots) support melodic flutters (mbira/tuned gongs/steel drum) into the atmosphere (guitar/sampled & taped source sounds). A rhythmic tour-de-force, that's just Anderson's own efforts! With vital support from some guest musicians on fiddles, trumpets, vocals, and medieval greatpipes, the sounds just flow off the disc. Track after track delivers a suite of savvy modern & traditional grooves and chants. A highly transcendent vision that centers its beat from the heart. One of the best albums I've heard this year!

  • I LOVE the song "French Bourrees" - other songs good also
