notes

"The Book of Flame brings together the thorny mathematics of Michael Manring's tuning theories with his wide-ranging artistic vision, the unalloyed metal aggression of Thonk with the melodic and textural sensibilities of Drastic Measures, the icy austerity of electronica and the sensuality of Afro-Asian modes and rhythms. The resulting construction could collapse under its own weight if not for Michael's maturing compositional sense and his always-lurking sense of humor."

  • Book of Flame

It's the Manthing. What else can you say?

  • Progressive Bass
    author: Paul Carr

Michael Manring always pushes the boundaries of what a bass can do and this is no exception. Using sounds, tuning and basses you are unlikely to hear elsewhere, this album offers a different feel to his other albums showing that music and the bass guitar can progress and offer something new.

  • Another masterpiece
    author: Prasiddha

Once again, Michael Manring has come out with a masterpiece bass album. From the crunching intro to The Fire Sermon, all the way to The Book Of Living And Dying, the album is pure perfection. This album is slightly darker than Thonk. Although the humor is still there, I find this album to be more 'dark ambient' than the outgoing Thonk.

Manrnig bass sound is very hopeful and warm and always I felt passion from his sound. I recommend to you because you could be feel the very sharpness of passion from his bass.

  • What can I say...... I love it!
    author: Vicki - Sacramento, Ca

The music is so progressive, not the norm. I am so tired of listing to the same sound but with the Michael you can always count on something fresh and innovative.

  • MANTHING!
    author: Conrad

The opener starts off with that powerful Zon growl than Manthing does so well. And after that what can only be described as apparent chaos ensues! The tracks featuring backing musicians demonstrate Michael's compositional and grooving abilities, but his solo pieces just go to another level. So many people take the bass solo as a show of technique, but Manring manages to add in a lot of melody to his solo pieces as well. Theres truly no bassist like Manthing!

  • Manthing... Major Understatement!
    author: James - Clearwater FL

I have not been able to put this CD down. every track takes you on a different journey through his vision. If you love the bass guitar, but always thought it was just for the Low End, then there is far more for you to learn and hear. Take a listen and I guarantee you will be a fan for life.
