notes
On Rock That Babe, this Hudson Valley trio proudly adds 13 gems to their diverse repertoire, as they jump from genre to genre with their infectious mix of old school folk to punk-ishly delivered trad revisionism. From the double-banjo epic "John Henry" to the day dreamy "Pearls," the energetic, rock your socks off tunes are balanced by gentler, lyrical tracks that ease you back into your porch swing.
The Mammals are composed of Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, grandson of the legendary Pete Seeger, Michael Merenda, art-pop songwriter, and Ruth Ungar, daughter of Grammy Award® winning fiddler/composer, Jay Ungar. On Rock That Babe, Pierce Woodward joins on bass and Ken Maiuri on drums to help create the next evolution of The Mammals' trademark sound: original songs and traditional fiddle and banjo tunes played with the energy and attack of a rock band.
Long-time Mammals fans will be delighted to hear the long-performed, but previously unrecorded version of the Cuban classic, "Chan Chan," sung by Tao. Ruth belts it out in the new banjo tune turned disco-influenced dance party, "Bad Shoes Blues." Also on the record is Michael's most requested political song, "The Bush Boys."
Rock That Babe was recorded by The Mammals' producer, Max Feldman. His attention to detail has revealed a beautiful blend of acoustic instruments, voices and original pop appeal, proving once again how the The Mammals "deftly bridge the generational and stylistic gap between Peter, Paul and Mary and Badly Drawn Boy."

Solid Performance - Fun Music
author: JoeI got interested in the Mammals as a bluegrass group. I especially enjoy the banjo style. I saw the Mammals at a smoky bar where people were talking and mostly ignoring the music. At that point the group was playing with their style, and drifting away from bluegrass. I was very happy when I found this CD. Good music and a strong performance.

Saw the Mammals in concert. Delightful! Bought this superb CD and Evolver and listening to them reminded me how much fun the Mammals evidently have on stage. Thanks for the treat of a new-old sound.
Hotter than a hounddawg in heat and twice as sweet.........

author: BillThis is a great CD. You could only hear better if you saw them live.
original, eclectic, alive
author: KevinHeard Chan Chan on the radio and had to stop the car till it finished to get the band name. Turned out they were playing local - excellent live band, and I'm digging the CD now.
Bush Boys Rock
author: JJWObviously they won't be invited to the White House any time soon, but Bush Boys will be a classic. We first saw the Mammals last month at the Arlo 40th Anniversary Tour. Such a moving moment. My husband and I loved it so much we bought Rock That Babe and it is great. Hope to see the Mammals again soon in concert again.
I love it.
author: Alasdair M.Ok, I'll admit that I don't own a copy of this CD, but I've been going on sites like this one, and I've heard The Mammals live with Arlo Guthrie. I love what I heard, especially "The Bush Boys", "Chan Chan", and "Fall On My Knees." I wish they'd written them all.
High expectations surpassed
author: Theresa BrattonOkay, I was driving late one night and heard "Bad Shoes Blues" on some obscure radio station (WOSU I think). I loved it, so I made a mental note of the song and artist names and ordered this CD when I got to a computer. I had no idea what kind of songs would be on the CD, but I love the whole thing. "Fall On My Knees," "The Bush Boys," "Lay Down Yr Mountain," are especially good in my opinion (in addition to "Bad Shoes Blues" of course).
My second Mammals CD-----awesome
author: Scooter B.I helped sell cd's for the Mammals at the Flye Point Music Festival and we sold out all the newest ones before I could get mine!!! I got evolver though! Super. Then I ordered Rock that Babe and WOW......a new kind of listening experience for me...I love the fiddling and cheerfull down home folksy nature of their work.....keeps my feet tapping.
FABULOUS! Purchased for Bush Boys - Enjoying all the songs.
author: Larry PI loved this CD. I purchased it to enjoy Bush Boys, wich I do tremendously. But I had the pleasant surprise of enjoying all of the songs on this CD.
Fabulous! "Bush Boys" deserves to become a classic!
author: Jim StrickBush Boys is almost as good as Profit, from their previous album EVOLVER. It deserves to become a classic. Quite Early Morning is very moving and showcases Tao Rodriguez-Seeger's plaintive, quiet vocals. Ruth Ungar's fiddle and belting out vocal in Fall on My Knees are well worth hearing. Merenda's plunking banjo style, so wonderful on John Brown's Dream, from EVOLVER, continues to be one of the central strengths of the group's driving musical synergy. I just can't say enough about this group!
The be
author: Marty BThe best Mammals CD yet. Really hot and creative arranging and singing. Ruth Unger shows her chops on the fiddle - can give Darol Angor a run for his money with "Chan Chan" (much better than on the Migration ECD) and she can reallly belt out a song. They deserve to be better known and played out here on the west coast.
A great mix of bluegrass and folk.
author: Dave ScherrepOn my way to work one day I heard the song Chan Chan and I was hooked. I found the rest of the CD to be very creative. A great mixture of bluegrass and traditional sounds.
superb
author: elizabethThis is as close as we southerners can get to the live show. We just found the Mammals at Festival International de Louisianne last weekend, fell in love, bought both CD's and are now ready to move to the East Coast to see them more often.
fun, upbeat and original
author: carolineThis CD is great; lots of upbeat, fun songs with an original feel. Love the lyrics and fantastic fiddlin'!
IT'S COOLER THAN COOL .
author: HOT RODThis CD is worth a listen.Really great stuff,my advice is,CHECK IT OUT NOW.......////
Another great Mammals CD!
author: ZackIMPOSSIBLE to listen without, at the very least, tapping your foot. I'm thankful to finally have Chan Chan. Killer recording, Mammals!
I love it!!!!!!! I play it all the time:)
author: MonicaI saw the mammals for the first time in Oct. at Mag Fest. They were awesome! I bought two CD's. My boyfriend and I just love it. Thanks CD baby!
Just like being at Wheatland..... loved the CD the first time through!
author: A Wheatland Fan from MichiganI first heard the Mammals last summer at the 30th Annual Wheatland Traditional Music Festival in Remus, Michigan. It was awsome to see them back at Wheatland again this year. Can we count on you again next year???? They brought the crowd down everytime they were on stage. I especially loved it when they jammed with King Wilkie on stage two. So up close and personal! I found, Quite Early Morning extremely moving. I ordered Rock that Babe as soon as I got home. I love every song on the CD . Happy Wheatland!!!
Kick ass . . . as usual!
author: JonThe Bush Boys is killer! Chan chan is unbelievable.
Outstanding! Truly great music on this CD.
author: Tim PerryWhile Evolver was absolutely fantastic, Rock that Babe takes it up a couple of notches and broadens the genre that the Mammals own. This album shows that these musicians do everything superbly. Creativity shines throughout the traditional tunes as well as the originals. The Mammals are truly inspiring.
GREAT
author: NeilThis album is AMAZING! The musicianship is superb, th evocals right on and the choices/compositions solid. I guess the apples don't fall far from the trees when it comes to talent. THis is a must-have for ANYONE who enjoys high energy acoustic music. The Mammals are FAR more than JUST "The Bush Boys".
modern folk classic
author: Jim JesseA modern folk/bluegrass/country/acoustic pop classic. Great political satire like "The Bush Boys" and "Bad Shoe Blues" to a moving cover of the Pete Seeger classic "Quite Early Morning." Its excellent all the way through.
best yet.
author: andytoomajianthese guys have been one of my favorite bands to see live for a few years now - and their albums have been good too, but so far none of them quite captured how great i thought they were as a live band. to mind this it the first of their recordings as a band that is 100% great all the way through. things have really gelled and feel comfortably and right on point. yeah - 100% great all the way through. these guys rock.
