notes
The single remarkable album by the Modern Arts Guitar Quartet (Buzz Gravelle, Walter Marsh, James Phillipsen, Lawrence Schwedler), formed in 1990 in Los Angeles. This 1994 recording of all-original compositions for guitar quartet (most written in the 1990s) captures their brilliance and energy in seven world premiere recordings of works by quartet members as well as compositions from Peter Yates and the late Theodore Norman.
12-tone, minimalism and prepared guitar music fill this album. "They Go on Mumbling... (An Elegy for John Cage)" is one of the few pieces written for four prepared classical guitars--which items are either attached directly to the strings or inserted in between the strings and the guitar in order to alter the usual sound of the guitar. The result is a completely different sound world--part Western percussion ensemble, part Indonesian gamelan.
