notes
Born and raised near 125th street in New York City, Ms. Maggart is the first daughter of Broadway veterans Brandon Maggart and Diane McAfee, and the sister of singer/songwriter Fiona Apple.
Ms. Maggart created a stir in the Los Angeles cabaret community in March 2001 with her debut show in Hollywood at the Gardenia, where Les Traub of Cabaret Scenes declared her "destined to become a major cabaret star." Gardenia owner Tom Rolla subsequently invited Maggart to perform an open-ended weekly run, just as her mentor, Andrea Marcovicci, had done before her.
Fostered by Marcovicci and Michael Feinstein, Ms. Maggart was introduced to cabaret society, appearing as guest artist with Feinstein and Marcovicci at various cabaret venues around the United States; notably Feinstein's at the Regency in Manhattan, the Plush Room in San Francisco, and the Oak Room in Manhattan.
On her own, Maude made her New York City debut at The Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel. She has since held extended engagements at the Plush Room in San Francisco, The Gardenia in Hollywood, Schroeder's Cabaret in San Diego, The Royal Room in Palm Beach and Danny's Skylight Room in Manhattan. In all locations she garnered all-around top critical acclaim and also feature stories in The San Francisco Chronicle, Time Out New York, and the Boca Raton News for her tribute to the women of the nineteen-twenties: "Shaking the Blues Away: a 1920's Cabaret"and her current show "It's The Talk Of The Town: a 1933 Songbook."
Maude has performed at Manhattan's Town Hall in the annual Mabel Mercer Foundation's Cabaret Convention for the past four consecutive years, and in May 2004 she co-starred in the critically acclaimed "Easy To Love: The Love Songs Of Cole Porter", directed by Andrea Marcovicci for The 92nd Street Y.

Look For the Silver Lining
author: Jeff DoricoA superior artist in a field rife with many good voices. Miss Maggart should have a long career. I will be purchasing more of her performances.
a hauntingly beautiful voice!
author: Michael TierraI awoke on my 69th birthday with Look for the Silver Lining running through my mind. I came to the computer to look the lyrics and then a performance and out of the ethereal realms I happened to discover Maude Maggart's recording. Her voice is other worldly -- especially in this repertoire of bygone years -- she captures just the right balance of tasteful nostalgia. Its not the way one would expect to hear these songs sung in their own time but rather a winsome looking back to an age when songs were written with beautiful melody and catchy and in this case, poignant lyrics to be expressed and sung -- not overly complex and overly produced as in contemporary pop music. If you have an appreciation for a voice that is a strangely beautiful mix of the two Judy's, Judy Garland and Judy Collins with the most unique warbling vibrato that seems to awaken warm feelings of nostalgia you should not miss the experience of listening to Maude Maggart. highly recommended very special and unusual. Michael Tierra
Maude Maggart Live

Maude Maggart - Look for the Silver Lining
author: David SpreheI love the old songs and Maude interprets them so beautifully. I'll be getting more of her CD's.
Look For The Silver Lining
author: Ruth GieblerFirst time I ever heard this singer. Absolutely Fantastic voice. Fantastic selections and beautifully done. Would love to hear more music from this artist.
Evocative.Deserves the highest quality vynal pressing and issue.
author: Domenic ForinoWith lines like follow me and climb the stairs from Love For Sale so rendered, evoking Louise Brooks' Lulu from Pandora's Box fateful ending, this disc delivers emitionally fusings of images of sight to sound like few other contempory recordings. To say it deserves the highest quality vynal pressing is in no way a slight to its production. it's simply the highest compliment I can give to a vocal masterpiece.
wonderful, can a gershwin cd be far behind?
author: robertgreat songs by a great artist, who could ask for anything more.
UTTERLY GOREGEOUS BITTER-SWEET DIVA
author: MERVYN CAPELUtterly gorgeous voice, with plaintive bitter-sweet quality. Maude Maggart gives a whole new dimension to familiar, even tired standards. The use of superb, slightly off-key piano and solo Yiddish-style violin is at times heart-breaking. I strongly urge Ms Maggart and her management to push her records over here to England, where I know she'd be hugely successful.
Maude sings the soul of the songs.
author: julia newhouseMs. Maggart's voice is perfect for her genre of music! It's crisp, clear, and her heart sings the soul of the songs. The CD has a nice balance of songs from yesteryear.
Speechless
author: ElizabethWow. Wow. I am obsessed with stuff from the 20s-50s. Radio shows, silent and 'talkie' movies, etc. I heard Maude on NPR whilst at work one afternoon, and rushed to cdbaby to purchase her cd. I am utterly speechless. She sounds as if she was plucked from 1925. I love this cd, I can't wait to buy more. Her voice is beautiful and haunting at the same time. A masterpiece.
Excellent recreation of past singers' songs
author: Robert W. DoniganAn excellent selection of 20s songs, sung in her sweet, mellow cabaret voice. The liner notes are a reminder of singers of the past, perhaps an education for young people today. Hopefully the singing of these songs by a talented young person will prompt others to do the same.
Lovely voice--cabaret at home every nite
author: Bob and Nena ShepherdA splendid treat for all who love cabaret music
Haunting and sublime are approaching the right adjectives..
author: HHaunting and sublime are approaching the right adjectives.. Really enjoyed this album, thanks muchly Maude. Would have liked some more up-tempo stuff from the era, but that is but a minor quibble.
I was speechless
author: dorritt lubelEvery song brought back wonderful memories. I did't think anyone sang that way anymore. I've played it so many times that I'm ready for a replacement. Not really! To sum it up,I loved it.
I loved it! I played it at work and it was delightful
author: BobbieOutstanding quality and fun to listen to. Took me to a lovely place!
Stunning vocal quality
author: Warren W. HigginsI have heard many singers over the years, live and recorded, who sing beautifully. What sets Maude Maggart apart for me is the clarity of her vocal performance. The diction of the words she sings is crisp and clear, and yet effortless and smooth in its flow. The pitch and tone of her voice are never "showy" or forced, just strong and full and--there's no other word for it--right. I guess the easiest way I can give my meaning is to say that when listening to her I never feel (as is too often the case) that she's self-conscious of her performance in any way. She doesn't try to add too much flourish. She's confident in her mastery of her type/genre of music--and deservedly so--and lets the easy perfection of her performance provide the wow factor, versus some artificial embellishment. I hope to hear a great deal more from her.
Amazing voice and style! Love her work!
author: D SwensonMaude has an amazing voice and style that easily transports one to another dimension. Love her work!
CAN'T HELP LOVING THAT VOICE!
author: BarbLove this CD - play it AT LEAST once a day! (Can't say that about ANY of my other CD's.) I'll be ordering ALL her other CD's tonite - just can't get enough of that voice!
Hauntingly beautiful!
author: Ann V.The CD has lovely songs, full of angst...Ms. Maggert's voice is haunting. I found myself singing "Can't Help Loving that Man" for days! I had heard clips of her voice on NPR and knew I had to have her CD in my collection. Truly beautiful!
Lovely. She's a comer! Could use a bit more variation of tone....
author: Keith SAfter hearing her rendition of the title song on Jonathan Schwartz's radio show, I had to have it. The album is terrific--she makes marvelous choices in material, and her style is pellucid--though I'm hoping that her subsequent releases show a bit more variety in tone of voice. Doing the American Songbook in a folky tone is piquant, but ultimately not very approachable if it's monolithic.
SOOTHING, REFRESHING, CAPTIVATING, SENSUOUS
author: R.J. LagueuxThe 1920's have a cabaret renaissnace with the music of Maude Maggart; Oh, to be in a Parisian cabaret when she sings J'AI DEUX AMOURS; an all French cabaret album should be in the planning stages!
Heard her music on NPR - what an inspiration
author: MR McGovernHer voice is like watching TV in high definition, clear and captivating. Her phrasing is perfect. This music accompanies me on my drive to work and I arrive mellow and relaxed. Ditto going home. Thanks NPR for the feature article about her.
SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL MUSIC
author: Trish JThe beauty of Maude's voice is matched only by her interpretive powers. Revisit songs from an earlier era and and hear them as if for the first time.
Refreshing change from the usual.
author: Nora RamirezSomeone already said it, but I need to repeat. I can't stop playing this CD. StarDust is my personel favorite but each song is wonderfully arranged and Maude's voice ...awesome. I also appreciate the time she has spent researching each song's history. This knowledge comes across in her voice... with emotion and reverance.
Some of the sweetest music ever!
author: Butch JohnsonSad, beautiful, amazing arrangements. Some of the songs are exemplary. My man is so strong it makes you cry.
Can't stop playing it. Over and over and over again.
author: Tanie WhiteI've said it all. I can't stop playing this CD over and over and over again. It makes me smile, cry, sigh the whole gambit. Wonderful change from the others.
crystal clear voice, haunting songs
author: JillMaude Maggart's voice is crystal pure, the songs on the CD are beautiful and haunting, or sometimes, kind of funny. I especially love Stardust.
Wow
author: SLPAmazing. I'm so glad NPR featured this lady so I could find her. I immediately bought all 3 of her releases and love, love, love them.
Sparkling!
author: SusanSome of my favorite songs, sung with real style and emotion.
terrific
author: Michael M Thomas - NY Observer, Questprobably the best Noel Coward singer performing today
A second Judy Garland
author: The Noël Coward SocietyThis CD is a wonderful exposé of Maude's haunting voice. The songs and the delivery are exceptional. There is still much more to come from this young lady. I sincerely hope she will not be tied to the tables and chairs of cabaret venues for ever. This is a big voice from a beautiful young woman who should be working on large stages and in film and allowing more of us to enjoy the ache and anguish she generates in her singing - and excellent CD at this stage in her career.
- author: Erika Esau
I first heard Maude Maggert on the Prairie Home Companion, singing a great old song about Hollywood. I find her voice astonishingly good and of the 20s spirit. It was the search for an album of her work that led me to CD Baby, too. I play this album over and over, which I can't say about a lot of my other CDs. Her piano accompanist is also excellent and innovative. Maude can only get better!
Maude,you done good!
author: KarenI am a seasoned listener of 20's musical vocalists of this genre - Ruth Etting and Helen Morgan being favorites - Maude, you done good! Now I can enjoy the wonderful songs rendered by an authentic voice - in stereo!
Mood and music pitch perfect
author: Steve McMullenAn artistic expression of respect and musicality that leaves the listener thankful that the treasure of the American Songbook has such a talented, young advocate.
Marvellous record. I have her newest CD as well, and can't wait for the next one
author: Sari MagazinerThis is a beautiful CD with great songs that will live forever. Ideally, I'd like a better rhythmic backup for this singer than she has used here. Most of all I appreciate her pure intonation. A special plus for this album are the program notes, which I found very interesting. They definitely added to my enjoyment of the music.
Exquisite taste and a voice for the ages--all of them.
author: Jeanie S.Although young, Maude Maggart has a marvelous feel for these ageless songs from the 1920s. Their composers would be thrilled by her obvious respect and affection for their creations. She sings them simply and honestly, without jazzing them up, in a voice that other reviewers here have accurately called pure and haunting. Amd she brings powerful emotion to them so many years after they were written. Don't wait another minute before ordering this spectacular CD!
Magic songs
author: FlaviaI really loved it. All cd make us feel so good...beautiful voice ! People here in Brazil must know about it!!!
- author: Tom Ryan
Maude has a beautiful voice. First I heard her on Prarie Home Companion on Minnesota NPR. The search for her CD was not easy but worth the effort.
I love it!
Her vocals are amazing and I love her songs. At times, I'm impartial to her voice and lyrics but the overall quality of the album trumps such sentiments.
So somber
author: GuySo somber, so uplifting. "Love for Sale" and "Nobody Likes Me Blues" are haunting. Maude reminds me of Vera Lynn, who sang "We'll meet again" 60 years ago.
Awesome voice - so pure - so real!
author: John CMaude Maggart puts so much emotion and heart into her songs. She understands the difference between singing "words" and singing from her soul. These songs were made for her and she for them.
We need more like this - keep 'em coming, Maude!
author: Jake SimonsThe songs of the '20's were true masterpieces. But not just anyone can do them justice. Maude Maggart has blessed us all by bringing them to life. You won't get this anywhere else.
Wonderful Cabaret Singer
author: Charles FrostIt's so relaxing to listen to Maude Maggart's songs. Her voice is so clear, so melodic, wonderfully and effortlessly crafted.
Wonderful !
author: delpA great CD ! A must have. Maude, I'd like to thank you more personally for your voice, and this wonderful music.
Range and agility in spades
author: GertieYou couldn't want more from a cabaret singer: Range and agility in spades - just check out "Lost Liberty Blues" for bravura - and a unique tone. Sweet and sour. Compelling. The piano's pretty clever too. Disclaimer: A Cole Porter and Noel Coward addict wrote this.
An intimate voice that makes you stop and listen.
author: ChrisThank you, Garrison Keillor, for introducing so many of us to Ms. Maggart. She has truly given new life to these old standards with her lovely, ethereal voice. This CD is a must for relaxing at the end of the day, each song caressing the listener like a lullaby. A top-notch listening experience!
One day we'll think back at first hearing this great caberet singer!
author: John L. SullivanClear, true sound on the vocals and the accompaniment by John Boswell. Thanks.
Great new talent
author: JedMaude Maggart has a fresh and lovely voice, and the creativity of approach to go with it. I am certain she will be a star.
One of the best new artists I have heard in a long time!
author: CathrineI first heard Maude on Prairie Home Companion and was so impressed that I immediately went to her website and ordered both her cd's. Her voice and interpretation of these old songs is so beautiful! She is my newest muscial obsession!
best on the vocal road in a loonng time.
author: Ed Consteinggreat cd excellent quality.
I guess they do still make 'em like that
author: JurgenI've always been a fan of the old standards, and this CD delivers. Familiar tracks such as "Love for Sale" and "Star Dust" are nicely balanced with lesser heard treasures like "Shaking the Blues Away" and "J'ai Deux Amours." It's a great mix. Miss Maggart's voice is somehow both melancholy and lilting. In a world awash in "American Idol"-style voices, Miss Maggart's is a deliteful and welcome change. I enjoyed the simple piano accompaniment but was left wanting more. And then, as if to answer my request, her follow-up album, WITH SWEET DESPAIR, added violin. Terrific!
oh, maude...
author: colleenGreat song selection, incredible musicians. A great CD to introduce people to this style of music, one of my favorite 'evening music' mood setters.
Beautiful and romantic .. however..
author: Gail Murphy- Wired One ConsultingBeautiful and romantic music, however if I were to give some input on production.. the first few tracks are from a live taping and include applause. I'd have edited this out since it takes away from the flow. If you are playing this CD in a quiet, romantic setting.. applause is not always appropriate or necessary. It would have been much more polished without it. How about another CD with just studio music, not live.
- author: garry L
Maude Maggart has a rich sweet voice. I know very little about this cd's 1920's music style but I like her voice. She stands out from todays droning whiney me me me young pop sound.
Reminiscent of Piaf
author: Laura PlourdeWhen I first listened to this CD I was reminded of Edith Piaf, so I listened to a CD of hers next. In fact, their voices are quite different, but I did realize what is the same: the compelling, mesmerizing intimacy of both singers' delivery. This is mood music of the highest order.
Wondrous voice and perfect choices
author: GudpalMaude Maggart's absolutely wondrous, magical voice gives new life to these well-chosen 1920s pieces, creating a perfect listening experience. Mmmmmmm.
An exquisite voice that makes your heart melt
author: Peggy LiI heard her sing on Prairie Home Companion and was captivated. Her voice is unusual as it is beautiful and profound. If you love old songs (she chose 1920s songs), buy this CD. She brings them up to date with a voice that is skilled, controlled, and lusciously pure and sweet. Maude's voice is a wonderful gift, so thank you Maude!
Great Voice
author: SarahMaude Maggart's voice is amazing; haunting, and yet rich and lively. I especially enjoy "Looking at you" and "I'll see you again". Her dedication to sings songs as they are written is unique in this day and age. It seems that the album lacked good artistic direction, in the sense of song selection and emotional balancing. I love angst as much as the next gal, but I wanted to rearrange the album so as not to stay in the depths of despair as long. However, I did order her second album, and even if it is too despairing, I'm sure I'll listen to it over and over--she is an amazing artist. Sarah
Crystal clear voice out of the past, brings on the memories
author: Michaele C.Enjoyed everything about this CD, choice of music, photos, and the sound of this artist. First heard about her when she sang on the Prairie Home show from New York, where Garrison Keillor had her as a guest. Super....
Wonderful
author: Mark OlsonWonderful voice. Wonderful music. Great interpretation. Takes me lots of places.

Fantastic interpretations of great old melodies!
author: cyn smithFor anyone over 50? This is the greatest CD ever. It is so nice to hear a fresh voice dealing with Coward, Porter, Kern, Berlin.....Kahn, Hammerstein, etc. I was so thrilled that I looked at once to see if there were anymore available and ordered it within 24 hours after getting the first one!
great songs
author: Karenloved this CD, the songs are mellow and just the kind I like. You can hear the singer and not just the music.
lovely songs for a lovely voice
author: Barbara Haleloved the choice of songs.......perfect for a melancholy day (in the best sense). makes angst acceptable. lovely voice
