A wonderful, weird collection of Progressive, Rock and Pop seasoned with colorful imagination.

notes

“Yesterday’s Children” is a 30th Anniversary collection of songs from many different eras. These songs have been re-processed and re-mastered with the addition of guitar, keyboards, vocals, and effects much like the Beatles did with ‘Free as a Bird’. The result is startling ... they sound as fresh and vital as if they are brand new. In the old days, MagellanMusic worked under primitive recording conditions, songs so spare that until the arrival of home multi-track capability most of them were little better than basic tracks. But thanks to the pleasures of current technology, “Yesterday’s Children” is a 14-song history renewed. It examples the years 1976 to 1987 mostly, covering a wide array of genres that MagellanMusic is well known for. It features 2 songs never before released, 2 Beatles tracks, 1 unlikely classic from 1933, 10 of their own gems, and a brand new song recorded specially for this collection, “Eternity of Light”. This is a superb example of the work MagellanMusic has done for so long. The imagination and willingness to explore so many styles just doesn’t happen much these days, a good reason to reach back and open the old picture book of sounds thought lost forever. Thirty years of music represented in just one CD may seem impossible, but this is a great effort. Now that we have been able to bring these cherished oldies ‘back to life’, it relays that wonderful feeling that anything is possible!

This CD is filled with fabulous music. They have a soft beautiful sound that is unforgettable. This one makes you get that "Beatles" feeling. MM has this calming way with their music that is so unique. It makes you want more..What a brilliant job they did in making this one! ...Love it!

Excellent CD. It's different than the others, takes a listen or two to get used to it, but they did a great job at restoring so many old songs. That opening song alone is worth the CD; it reminds me of an old, faded black & white picture found in grandma's attic brought back to life!

I now own all the MM cd's. I wish they were still making their art. I want more!

  • Why haven't I heard of them before?
    author: Rob Goering

I was impressed to no end when I heard this. I'd rather just listen to new artists than review them, but this one I couldn't resist. MagellanMusic is one of the most interesting bands I've heard in a long time. They call themselves progressive, but in a different way. There's a pomposity to Prog Rock that I like, but this one doesn't. They make their point faster and don't mess around with it; maybe Prog Pop is more accurate. There are a couple songs that I'm not a fan of but at least it shows they're not stuck on any one thing. But best of all, it's memorable. This CD is recognizable, full of great melodies, and a style all its own. Good enough that I wonder why somebody hasn't signed them to a contract yet.

  • Originality is foremost
    author: Lancaster Publications

What I find so remarkable about MagellanMusic is the unique originality that they present with each CD. There is no way to accurately say that one of them is THE best MagellanMusic album, but of the four, “Yesterday’s Children” may come the closest. It is a presentation of work that spans their 30 years together, a very wide range of styles that have been refurbished from old recordings, a superb example of how imaginative MagellanMusic has always been. I was so enthralled by it that when it ended – an ending like nothing I’ve ever heard - I was tempted to listen again. There is no low point on this CD; each song has its own strange fascination and kept my attention. MagellanMusic is a very polished, professional band that is unmistakable, and Yesterday’s Children I highly recommend

  • Bravo!

I don't usually give 5 stars to CD's unless they're true classics earned by the passage of time, but this one has actually done that. I've listened to MagellanMusic for years, heard most of these songs many times, but these updated versions are fantastic. They were almost like brand new songs to me, nothing like what I used to hear. "The Clone" and "Derelict" may be the best examples - both had a strange feel to them, but these new versions magnify that effect strongly. On the other hand, the song "Someone" was never among my favorites, but this version is. It has a completely different sound to it, sort of melancholy, reminds me of a soundtrack to a sad break-up scene in a movie. Most impressive of all was the Mikada Minn track - this one is stunning. I saw MagellanMusic a few times in those years but never heard it, and the music they usually played was nothing like this. I can only sum it up by saying Yesterday's Children is my favorite MagellanMusic album, it is superb. If you're thinking of getting one of their albums, and wonder which would best represent them, this is it.

  • A true surprise
    author: Radu Lazar

This CD is astonishing. It sounds fresh and vibrant even though most of these tracks were originally recorded in the late 1970's, and that may be what makes Yesterday's Children so unusual. There is a flair to it that has a distinct 70's taste yet touches on subjects that are relevent today, a strong suggestion that these guys were thinking progressively as well as playing it. It's also evident that MagellanMusic's offbeat approach and originality is more realistic than their other CD's; after listening to this I honestly can't compare them to any other artist. Each song has its own aura, distinctly different from one to the next, like a series of short stories that meet the same conclusion. MagellanMusic may call themselves 'prog rock', but this is a strangely moving collection of songs, emotional at times; I caught myself comparing my own memories to theirs more than once. Even the title - Yesterday's Children - captures exactly that premise, which they did a very good with, as any good artist tries to do. Altogether, this is one of the most captivating CD's I've heard in a long time.

  • Fascinating Journey Through the Past!
    author: Havel Media

Quite a stunning effort. Taking a set of older recordings and reworking them, re-imagining them -- literally making them new songs -- is truly astonishing. Very enjoyable listening, and fun to wonder what's new and what's old. Another fascinating musical journey by MagellanMusic.
