Is Your Madonna Collection Complete? Not without Pre-Madonna! No Madonna Collection Is Complete Without These Early Recordings!
Listener reviews:
I recently got my Pre-Madonna disk in the mail, and I love it! I just can't believe that this is Madonna (even though I know it is really her). Well, okay, perhaps "can't believe" is exaggerating slightly, but comparing the pre-Madonna to Madonna now, one can certainly sense how her vocal ability has changed. It is funny how I received this CD around the time Evita is out, therefore all I can do is compare and contrast.
First of all, Pre-Madonna actually reminds me of Madonna's 1994 album, Bedtime Stories. The type of music sounds similar. I have to admit I don't know much about naming musical genres, but I would classify both albums as light dance music, kind of R&B (I think). The first song, Laugh to keep From Crying, reminded me instantly of Alanis Morissette! True! Madonna's voice take on Alanis' "just say the vocals kind of care-free like", in my opinion. I found this rather... Ironic! :-)
It's a little hard to pick a favorite, since many of the songs on this CD are similar in the type of music. I would have to choose Burning Up as my favorite, since it gives me a "high". I do remember hearing this song on Robin Leach's Madonna Exposed special , if I recall correctly. The general innocence of the lyrics (simple sweet love) is calming and relaxing to listen to, while still provoking a sense of "get up and dance". These tunes would be great in a dance club.
One does sense with Madonna's vocals is: Boy, she has come a long way since these tracks. She has evidently improved so much with respect to using her voice to project and emphasize. It is worth it to compare Pre-Madonna to Evita, and how time, age, and work have managed to create the enthralling beauty of Madonna's voice (in my opinion). In Pre-Madonna, her voice is quite low, and sometimes even sounds a little boyish. The producers of the album have done a marvelous job of digitally-remastering the melodies. In a way, it's hard to believe that the songs in this album were recorded 17 years ago!!! I have to admit that the music in this album sounds similar to the type of music that is generally popular today, and I find this, well, rather neat! (oops, there's that word that Madonna hates :-)
The song Ain't No big Deal, in the beginning, truly made me think of an exercise video! Madonna repeats the phrase (she more says it than sings it) : "Reach out, reach out!", and I have to admit I found this part rather funny to listen to.
Also, this CD is in conjunction with Steven Bray, the guy who worked on a lot of later madonna albums in the 80s that were VERY successful. Happy customer,
Angie Hung
Hey! I'm a radio announcer at Z95.3 in Vancouver, BC. I ordered Pre-Madonna just before Christmas and finally got it last week... WOW! I immediately brought the album to my music director and we're currently featuring tracks from the album on the air. As a matter of fact, Everyboby '97 is a 3 night BuzzCuts champ! BuzzCuts is a 'battle of the bands' type of program where we put 2 new songs against each other and the listeners vote. Madonna has beaten New Edition, Live and Crystal Waters so far. Tonight at 8p PST she'll be up against the Fugees. I've been talking up your album and announcing the URL a lot on the radio, so expect some more Canadian orders! If you'd like to hear if Madonna wins, check out http://www.z95.com tonight at 8p PST. Our station broadcasts in RealAudio 3.0, so check it out! catch the buzz... pass it on.
buzz.

BRIAN WILLIAMS
I love this album, any madonna fan needs to buy this, though this album could have used a few more rare tracks, it's quality it immaculate, songs are good, catchy, the best song was "Crimes of passion" i've heard all of the pre-madonna songs, such as "Get up" "get down" "drowning" "simon says" and most of them are good catchy, but i have to ask when the unreleased songs are gonna be released and also, i would like to know a list of unreleased madonna songs, is "Love attack" really a song? made up?

Hi there!
I recieved my "Pre-Madonna" CD today off you guys and I must say it brought a smile to my face!
Definitely a seminal collection of tracks. Hearing the original version of "Burning Up" reminded me of why that track off her first album has so much meaning to me. Who can forget the first time they saw the video for "Burning Up" on television? Not me! When you're a 14 year old boy with hormones racing everywhere, seeing the embodiment of adolescent carnal desire right in front of you can be quite startling. Ever since that moment in 1983 I've been smitten! The electro/synth sound of the late 70s/early 80s is such a gas! I love "Don't You Know" for that reason alone! In all, a worthy addition to any serious Madonna collector! Thanks, Steve!

STEPHEN & MADONNA RULE!
author: ashleyI fell in love with Madonna the first time i saw her (Lucky Star video,1984 watching Mtv)i was 7. After all this time (i'm 31 now) I feel like she's a member of my family! i.v bin listening to Confessions Tour alot lately but i'v always been a diehard fan for her old NY club scene music...then i ordered this CD and it stole my HEART! i feel like i'm sitting in the studio with her (and Stephen) in her rubber bracelets and ripped up sewn together clothes. Everybody 81' IS LIKE NO OTHER!!!!!!!! Stay and Don't You Know practically give me tears. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU STEPHEN!!!!! WE WANT MORE!!!!!!!!
PRE-MADONNA
author: Octavio Magana JrI was scared to order this album, but I am glad I did. I LOVE IT!!!!!!! I did not want it to be that Otto Van what ever his name is music that makes not sense. PRE-MADONNA shows an early Madonna. Her vocals have progressed througout the years. This album has the early version of what is now STAY which shocked me, because it is two songs combined. Crimes of Passion, Everybody in both versions, and Burning up (My favorite by far). This is a must have to see her evolution. You will not regret getting this album.
In the beginning!
author: M.Out of the MANY early Madonna releases, this is the one that counts the most! It's very interesting to hear Madonna raw and unfiltered. At times I think she sounds pretty damn good. Love the laugh to keep from crying track and the original demo of everybody. You can tell that the woman had something special to offer and lucky for her, she managed to prove that to the world.

If you are MADONNA FAN, you must have this cd. Great website to order your stuff, good and reliable service.
what a revelation
author: meganAs a true Madonna fan I loved listening to this. As the listener, you can hear raw talent. She was still developing her own style and its just great to hear what was to set the precedent for her superstardom. This is a rare treat:)
Loved it!!
author: JuneI would definitely recommend this cd to any Madonna fan/collector. It is extremely hard to find so don't hesitate to purchase this one. To be honest there are some songs that I would consider raw in quality BUT considering when they were recorded and the environment they were recorded they did the best they could restoring these songs from a tape cassette. The songs are a precursor to Madonna's first album. Some of the songs I've never heard before like Crimes of Passion, Laugh To Keep From Crying, Don't You Know & Ain't No Big Deal so they were a special treat. I wish Madonna had added these to her first couple albums. Actually, Stay & Don't You Know were combined & completely overhauled for the song Stay on her Like A Virgin album. Stay from LAV doesn't sound anything like the version on PM. I think if you are a Madonna fan then you will appreciate this CD & will want it for your collection!!
awesome CD!
author: SusanI am such a Madonna fan...this is a must Madonna CD....if you any kind of Madonna fan this is the CD!!Love it!!
Nice gem to own!
author: VeronicaThis cd is a must have for any huge Madonna fan. It is just amazing to hear how she sounded before she became such a huge star. And also to hear the demos of the tracks that secured her that big record deal!!! Love it!!

Fab
author: VickyThanks for a fab CD. I have been trying to get this for years...thank you
Stephen Bray is a music master
author: Angel HeathersThis cd is brilliant for its intimate look into the humble, and unpolished beginnings of an interstellar mega-success. Madonna obviously has something to bring to the table, because she's brought together hit after hit with many different producers, but it must be said. STEPHEN BRAY, I SALUTE YOU! While I'm 27 years old and don't know what happened in the early 80's, I can only imagine that Madonna's songwriting skills and knack for simple melody were birthed from the seed of Stephen Bray. STAY '81 is a brilliant production and I adore it to this day. SIDENOTE: Each Time You Break My Heart by Nick Kamen is brilliant, Steve. Its on repeat in my ipod, along with Stay '81.
awesome!!!
author: chris from merced californiatotally bad-ass cd and madonna sounds awesome on this pre-madonna cd!!! this is valley-music totally for sure!!!
killer music!!!
author: jason vorheesi am from the back woods of north carolina and this album is original material.madonna sounds so young on this cd.i reckon madonna will perform these songs on one of her concerts one day.perhaps some music videos on mtv. a sort of disco-style music video would be cool.
- author: mo'niza

author: faye smithywhy hasn't madonna made any music videos for these songs? perhaps madonna makes some videos to put on mtv.maybe the original version of burning up.or a video for ain't no big deal.crimes of passion should have a video too.i hope to see a video for stay one day and for the early sounds of everybody.i been a madonna fan since day-one.i am 78 now.
funky!!
author: ladonna hester from merced calithis album was funkadelic all the fuckin way!it has a disco kind of flow to it.it was a very rare cd due to the fact it had a different vocal to it.like,a younger madonna with the original back-up singers from her new york city days when madonna played gigs at studio 54 and danceteria! madonna is one of my favorite singers...she inspires my looks and attitude.i am totally funky like that...like, everyday y'know?i sooo listen to madonna like all day.cooool!!!!

I've been a Madonna fan for 22 years and I must say that this CD is amazing. Any fan who's been skeptical about it should pick this up. This is proto-Madonna and she was great in 80-81. Other reviewers have mentioned that her voice wasn't as strong as it is now, but what they haven't said is how even then, Madonna already had a great ear for melody and for writing great pop music. The original version of Stay is so ahead of its time it could have been a bonus track on Ray of Light. This Stay is the lyrical companion of Don't You Know? These two songs morphed into the version of Stay that ended up on Like a Virgin. Another highlight is the rocking Pretenders-inspired Laugh to Keep From Crying which rocks just like the original version of Burning Up here. If anyone saw the Re-invention Tour you'll recognize the version she performed here. Crimes of Passion is another classic example of Madonna pop. Madonna fans check this out. You'll be playing it as much as your other CDs by her.
About the track "Crimes Of Passion"...
author: OldMadonnaWell I hate to bust your bubble but that's not Madonna singing on that track. She may be singing background but not the lead vocal. That was 80's dance artist Regina, who had another hit called "Baby Love". The reason why it sounds so similar to Madonna's previous tracks or her style, is because Steven Bray also wrote and produced Regina at the same time he was working with Madonna.

This is a refreshing insight into the early starts of the Pioneer of Pop.
How cool is that?
author: Jamie StevensHow cool is that to have all the unreleased Madonna demos back from the time when Madonna still was Madonna. All those catchy 80's songs from the pop princess herself can be found in unreleased demo versions (the ones that made Sire records sign her) and there are also a few unreleased tracks. The catchy "Crimes of Passion" is just gorgeous and a must foe everyone who liked Madonna in the 80's.
Interesting content, but fair sound quality.
author: JenniferInteresting content for the die hard Madonna fan. The sound quality of the CD is fair. You will not hear that true stereo sound and deep bass that I find a signature of Madonnas CD's. To be fair, the sound quality is addressed in the liner notes. Pick this one up if you are hardcore Madonna fan.
Where Did This Come From?
author: SIPre-Madonna. Crazy...I wish other artists release pre releases like this. Yes, Madonna's voice has progress tremedously. Good Stuff. Visit me at www.cdbaby.com/si2 . Peace....SI
