Swami Ma Chetan-Jyoti, originally from Canada, has lived in India for almost 35 years. Truly devoted to the spiritual life, she is the only woman ever ordained as a swami by her guru Sri Chandra Swami.Now at age 62 "Ma" lives in Rishikesh, directly beside the Ganges River, where she maintains a small ashram. Ma has been chanting the Names of the Divine as part of her spiritual practice for most of her life, and as the gifted musician she is, has collected hundreds of traditional chants and composed many of her own chants as well. She has traveled widely throughout India, singing in temples and other holy places, and has performed for as many as 80,000 people at one time.

This CD, " Live Kirtan", was made in India in response to many requests from friends, who urged Ma to record some of her music. Some of the chants were recorded and mixed in Dehra Dun; others in New Delhi, and the project was made possible in large part by the support and loving kindness of Krishna Das, who connected with Ma on one of his trips to India several years ago.

Krishna Das, who is well known for popularizing kirtan in the West, was so moved by the beauty of Ma's chanting and the depth and passion of her devotion that he invited her to come to the US and tour with him. During the spring and summer of 2002, Ma spent time in Woodstock and New York City, did some touring with KD, and came out to the Pacific Northwest, eventually returning to New York, where she recorded a second CD, "Ram Bhaav Re" before leaving for India. She returned to North America the following year, touring through Toronto, New York, California, and Oregon, where she was received with love and gratitude by people hungry for the fire of her spiritual passion and devotion to God. As one of her devotees here in the West says, "Ma must be seen to be believed, a combination of raw power and deep silence produces a profound mood in the participant. Her kirtans always take you to the deepest places."

"Live Kirtan", blessed with Ma's distinctive style, which incorporates subtle syncopation within the rhythmic structure, dynamic and powerful compositions, a mastership of the harmonium and a voice that proves that power and humility are not mutually exclusive, goes a long way towards bringing us in touch with the Divine, that deepest place within each of us. It really opens the heart like only Ma can do so well!

As she says of her chanting, "There is nothing I would rather do than sit and chant the name of Ram. It fills me with peace and wisdom. May you also be filled in the same way while chanting the name of Ram."

    once we got a chance to attend the live kirtans of ma chetan jyoti in sachha dham ashrem in rishikash.we requested ma to get them record so that those who are not present in live kirtan in ashrem can get the records.we belive that ma has humbly dedicated this cd to gurudev shree swami(munibaba)chandra swami ji.ma chetanjyoti is having a huge collection of spiritual songs,bhajans and kitans(we have heard in 2001 june).if some one can find new collection release please let us know regards to ma chetan jyoti BIGBOSS studio dehradun-INDIA bigboss_studio@yahoo.co.in

    I bought my first copy of this album on cassette from Chetan Jyoti Ma while I was in India. My tape has begun to degrade and I'm thrilled, now, to listen to the CD. She transports me with her devoted spirit right back to the banks of the Ganges, to which she sings her committed thanks. Listen, sing along and enjoy.
