Jazzy Fairy Tales
Best suited for pre-k through grade 2
Jazzy Fairy Tales: With the assistance of Susan Milligan’s storytelling and inventive lyrical reworkings, Strong and Rogers turn fairy tales already familiar to preschoolers into jazzy versions that will delight all ages. Swing, boogie and dance as the playfulness of jazz gives these original versions of well known fairy tales new life! Children are transported into a magical world where chocolate pudding tames a wolf, bears boogie and sing the blues, and trolls and goats scat and dance on tippy toes over bridges. Fun stanzas like “Bop Boo Bop, Bop Boo Bay, Piggy feet hop, Piggy feet play”, sung with an Andrews Sisters swing will make children want to sing, dance and bop along in this interactive performance piece.
Bop Boo Day!
Program can be modified to work for pre -k through grade 4
From their self produced CD, Bop Boo Day!, Louise Rogers and Rick Strong celebrate some of the greatest artists of jazz. Through songs, poems and stories, very young children are introduced to Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. In a call-and-response style, Rogers sings and scats and the kids respond, making the performance an interactive experience for all.

"With the assistance of Susan Milligan’s storytelling and inventive lyrical reworkings, Strong and Rogers turn fairy tales already familiar to preschoolers into jazzy versions that will delight all ages. " Elliott Simon - All About Jazz, April 2007
“The most joyously encouraging way of expanding the audience for jazz I’ve heard … Louise Rogers and Susan Milligan have developed an exhilarating – and fun – jazz curriculum .” Nat Hentoff
Jazzy Fairy Tales is the result of our exciting collaboration as storyteller and jazz vocalist. Based on our belief that music and storytelling should be an integral part of every child's day, we decided to join jazz and storytelling and see what would happen. We began with The Three Little Pigs. The children found new life in the retelling of this well known story, as the magic and playfulness of jazz gave them the freedom to boogie with the pigs! Our jazzy fairy tales are now performed for hundreds of young children who sing, swing, and scat along with their favorite fairy tale characters. Now you can sing the blues with the pigs, dance with the goats, and scat with the bears as you enjoy these lively, original jazzy tales with the children you love!
Louise Rogers is a growing leader in the field of jazz education for children, as well as an accomplished performer. Nat Hentoff praised her as "the most joyously encouraging way of expanding the audience for jazz". Her most recent CD, "Bass-ically Speaking", a CD of bass and voice featuring her husband, bassist Rick Strong, has been hailed by Jerry Bergonzi as a "Masterful performance... refreshing to hear." She has 2 jazz CDs out for children “Bop Boo Day” and “Jazzy Fairy Tales”. “Come Ready and See Me” is her newest jazz CD which will be released in June 2007. In addition to performing, Louise runs a children’s jazz choir and works regularly with students from preschool age through high school. She is the music specialist at The Medical Center Nursery School, a teaching artist in NYC and Long Island and a voice instructor at Roxbury High School in New Jersey. She is frequently hired as a clinician to work with jazz choirs primarily involving vocal improvisation instruction and adjudicates in the solo vocal category. Her innovation and success in jazz education led to her invitation to present a clinic at the prestigious International Association for Jazz Educators Convention. She has also presented at many other conferences. Louise lives and works in New York City.
At an early age Susan Milligan learned the importance of play from her toy-designer father and the value of stories from her children's-librarian mother. Ms. Milligan received a bachelor's degree in English Education from Fairleigh Dickinson University and her MA degree in Drama at New York University. There she studied with Richard Schechner, famous for his ground-breaking work in environmental theater, from whom she learned how to approach drama viscerally as music, as play. She has directed numerous plays and improvisational groups working with children from pre-school through high school. After raising her own two children, Ms. Milligan returned to school to pursue her passion for teaching young children at Teachers College receiving an MA in Early Childhood Education. She is the head teacher for 4 and 5 year olds at the Medical Center Nursery School, an affiliate of Columbia University. She has a particular interest in storytelling and uses techniques pioneered by Vivian Gussen Paley with whom she has studied. Ms. Milligan is also a member of the Bank Street Writer's Group.

author: Judith K. NadorThis CD will be perfect for me to use as a starting point for relating Jazz and Literature. I just completed an NEH Jazz Institute at Washington University in St.Louis, MO and we did research for a bibliography to be circulated throughout educational circles. The rhythms, the storytelling, and the jazzy music made this CD perfect as an addition to the list. I also intend to share this with my family and friends and their babies. It is awesome. Judi
I think it's humorous and clever.
author: Alexander StrongI like the idea of taking fairy tales and putting them to music. I also think it's funny that the goats dance, the pigs eat chocolate pudding, and that Goldilocks just barges into the bears' house without anyone saying, "come in!" Overall, a great CD.
Rhythm and Reading
author: Jane GreysonThe jazzy rhythms prepare little ones for reading and patterning in general. The revised stories teach conflict resolution. Children can listen, get up and dance, and sing along to the bee-bopping songs. What fun! Thanks Susan, Louise, and Rick.
My grandson loves it!
author: Amanda BarnesThis CD has all the things my almost three-year-old grandson loves - jazz to dance to, familiar stories, and funny details. Thanks for bringing joy to at least one little boy.
Can't Stop Boppin'
author: Joey PerniceI love this CD because it makes Fairy Tales Jazzy and oooooohhhhh it's just that good!!!!!!!!!!
