A collection of poignant songs, rich in lyric and beautifully orchestrated. Folk based, but enhanced by intricate melodic content, unique songs of longing, love and surrender.

notes

The New York Times: "Lori Lieberman possesses one of the most attractive and unusual voices- a relaxed, rich contralto that she uses with a real feeling for ballads."

"Lori Lieberman is an inspiration". Billboard Magazine

Lori Lieberman's "Home Of Whispers" was originally released in 1996, and ranks among her finest works. Hailed by critics as the "definitive audiophile recording", it was recorded live with an orchestra, featuring Dean Parks, Paulhino De Costa, Chuck Delmonico, Bob Mann, Monty Byrum, and the Gay Men's Chorus, to name a few. It was the Midnight Special's most favored number one winner of that entire year. "Girl Writing A Letter", adapted from William Carpenter's prize winning poem, was recorded by Amanda McBroom, and weaves the haunting tale of a love discovered within the canvas at the Gardner Museum. Christine Lavin chose "Let The Rain Come Down" among her compilation CD, "The Stealth Project".
The songs, composed by Lori Lieberman, are rich in lyric and in tone, both sophisticated and pure. From the single guitar on "Circling Of The Souls", to the lush "Home Of Whispers", this CD is a beautiful, astonishing achievement.

  • A most amazing singer . . . An awesome recording.
    author: J.T. Waldmann

Listening to HOME OF WHISPERS, Lori Lieberman's second recording for Pope Music, is an awesome experience. She is a master melodist and lyricist, and every song on the album will hold you in its thrall. Each song, with the exception of the very strange yet very beautiful "Girl Writing a Letter," appears to be a very personal and intimate statement. She seems to put her feelings on the line: "I ride beside the swollen stream/Where there is no reflection of me/And I know I'm safe at last/Far from my home of whispers" . . . "The children hear them fighting . . . Accusations flying/And they learn that love is war/They learn what love is for." Match her melodies and lyrics with outstanding instrumental and vocal backing - including the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles - and Gene Pope's impecabbly musical recording technique, and you have an album to treasure. My only regret is that her other album for Pope Music, "A Thousand Dreams" and her earlier works are no longer available. Maybe some good folk somewhere will see fit to reissue some of those early works by this marvelous artist.
