notes
We are extremely blessed and very proud to have had many experiences in our careers up to this point. Collectively, we have shared stages as performers and stars of the first magnitude, nationally and internationally. Additionally, we have been fortunate to collaborate as writers and producers with some of the greats of our era.
We've also participated in stage and film productions that have helped to broaden our musical abilities and creative scope. Theses experiences have helped to develop great relationships with certain artists and musicians over the years and through these relationships, many of which have become friendships, we elected to compile this collection of great singer/performers and musicians who we've had the good fortune of working with over the course of their careers. Label it "calling in favors" but many of the artists and musicians on this CD are world class at what they do and were gracious in lending their talents and skills for the making of this project.
It is with profound gratitude that we note their contributions to "The Longshot Sessions - The Soul of R&B". From mistah llou's "Barry White" like tinged "Step Wit' Chu" to the soulful vocals of "Heaven & Earth" on "Can I", there is something for anyone and everyone who loves a good tune with great vocals. In Chicago we call this "Grown Folks Music". We hope you enjoy this collection of Adult Contemporary R&B compositions. Sincerely - Dick Fowler and Keith Stewart

Can I, is down right Marvelous
author: PopsqualieHeaven & Earth - Can I (Longshot Sessions - The Soul Of R&B) Probaby the first 'stepper' album that had major UK soul scene attention in 2005, with this moody and magnificent Marvin Gaye style groover being the popular choice from what is a very very strong soul album. Totally recommended.

Chicago collaborations with many singers but a common theme :- 80's style productions mostly with a stepper style beat and deep vocals. Highlights are 'Can I' by Heaven and Earth, 'Step Wit Chu' Mistah Chu (Lou Johnson), 'Keep On Steppin' by Marzette Griffith, 'Spin Me' by Dick Fowler and 'Try Me' by Keith Stewart. Also check the ballads 'This Time I'm Gonna Be Sweeter' by Dean Williams and 'Mo Better Love' by Marshall Titus. Strong throughout if you were into mid to late 80's soul, this is for you.

“The Longshot Sessions - A Steppin’ Odyssey” it says on the tin. And talking of tin, before you run off and put on that tin hat after the deluge of “steppin’” we’ve had since Robert Kelly Esq introduced us to the genre, let me tell you that this is a cut above a good proportion of what’s gone before. The album isn’t particularly new, but it’s proved pretty elusive, mainly due to demand I think, so it’s took me until now to get to telling you about it. Out of Chicago, this is jam packed with superior quality contemporary soul music with an acceptable urban edge. Key cut for me, and big on the dance floor, is the Heaven & Earth track “Can I”. A striding bass heavy groove with wicked lead and harmony background vocals, this cut is large!! More dance floor friendly grooves come in the shape of “I Got Yo’ Back” and the haunting mid-tempo “Spin Me”, featuring Dick Fowler who comes over all Kenny Burke like. Taking the tempo down, we have the wonderful “This Time I’m Gonna Be Sweeter” with lead vocals from Dean Williams. Also appearing on a couple of cuts is Marzette Griffith……remember his album from a couple of years back? All writing, arrangement and production on the album is from Dick Fowler and Keith Stewart, clearly a duo to keep an eye out for in the future. This album is an absolute must-have, being choc full of winners!! Acquire

Whar can I Say
author: Berry TowlerThis CD kicks more backside than a Boot Camp PT Instructor. I am really enthusiastic about this CD. It is a rich blend of steppers and ballads and is steeped in the time honoured quality soul / funk tradition. The Longshot Sessions is a collaboration of talented artists under the guidance of Dick Fowler and Keith Stewart who are no lightweights and have had performing and production experience for many years, but more on these artists in a moment. I love every track bar one – and that is a personal taste issue, as any sort of ragga rap is sure to get my shackles up!!! The song that aroused my interest was “Step Wit Chu” – just a brief hearing of this song had the jolly old lugholes primed. This song is FANTASTIC. I have not heard such a dirty, slinky and FUNKY stepper in a long time – the beat is meaty, chunky and has a real kick! Vocally this really does the business – imagine the lazy growl of Barry White and the deep plummeting depths of Isaac Hayes over The slow, loping Soul II Soul styled beat is enhanced by a dirty bassline, that if played loud, hits you right in the gut. SUPERB!!! The vocalist, Mistah Llou, knows what he wants and by all accounts he’s going to get it! This is undoubtedly my track of the moment. KC Lee is a more smooth vocalist and his superb stepper “I Got Yo’ Back” would not have been out of place in the early 90s. His delivery almost falls into the Jeff Redd category, so that is a definite bonus! Heaven & Earth provide the vocals over this sax drenched pounder, “Can I”; aping some great dancefloor numbers from the past from Donna Summer and Marvin Gaye this song is another great song to take away into the car with you. The first ballad really does cut the mustard too, and features a decent performance from Dean Williams supported on sax by Dave Polk. Dean has a smmoth quality but is not afraid to allow a little southern grit to sneak in now and again. I get the impression that Dean could and really would like to really let rip big time! There is an 80s good-time vibe with the Mikki Bleu-ish “Keep On Steppin’” featuring Marzette Griffith. I also feel a touch of Kashif, too and if you loved his last set then I think this would appeal to you. The CD is split nicely with a funky, quirky 80s styled instrumental – my only quibble is the lightweight turntable scratching. I think it would be better without it, but I do love the keyboards they use. Dick Fowler follows the ragga moment with a SUPERB ballad, “Whatever You Want”. The chilled muted trumpet and deep groove / synth is really a sound that I adore, and vocally Kenny Davis is right in the pocket. Dick Fowler adds his own more than able vocal skills to the mix with “Spin Me” complete with funky, scratchy guitar and eerie synth. I have played this track a lot, and rarely does the Major label world come up with cuts of this quality and style nowadays. Past Lowdown fave, Marshall Titus, crops up on the essential ballad, “Mo’ Better Love”, which could almost have been crafted with the late, great Luther Vandross in mind. This is gentle, deep and Marshall sure knows how to handle the downtempo material, his agile vocals hint at a powerful energy behind the song. When you hear this for the first time you are aware of how strong he is, and I am reminded that I should dig out his superb 1990 12” “Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me” for a spin. The velvety Keith Stewart pops up for the warm “Try Me” which is very, very good, but the real showstopper as far as ballads go is the intriguingly titled “Pu Tang”. The vocals are attributable to Attitude, Soul & Pride and are just amazing. I am instantly thinking of Barrington Scott Henderson when I hear this gentleman. The deep, rich basslines are sexy and the synth and keyboards really add some extra mystery to this most luscious of groves. The quivery, pleading, soaring vocals are laid down on top of this and raise this to essential status. Let me see any Major Label clone come up with something as good as this! I was not too enamoured on the remix of “Step Wit Chu”, and wondered why it was here, but soon forgot this with the superb Dick Fowler ballad, “Time Out For Love” which is very similar to some of the ballads on the latest set by the Unifics. The set ends up with a Gospel song from Heaven & Earth, which almost has touches of Teddy Pendergrass in the vocals. As I said, this is a great CD, and many quality parts come together to make this one whole effort. Artists like this are a real godsend, and I think that the longer the lunatics run the asylums at the record companies we will see more quality artists like Dick and Keith step out on their own to do things there way, the proper way.
Keep your groove and vibe goin' all night long
author: All that Smooth Urban JazzThis is a crazy cool smooth r&b CD! From the moment 'Step Wit' You" began vibin' my head was bobbin and my body swayin. The deep baritone voice of Mistah Llou salutes Barry White and Issac Hayes, but Mistah Llou is not a copykat. His vocals and rap are smooth as a fine cognac and surely will set the mood for some heated late night entertainment. The LongShot Sessions "A Steppin' Odeyssey" is available on Da-Man Records Label. You will enjoy the smooth groove of "Got Yo' Back" " Keep on Steppin" "Can I" "Try Me" and " Whatever You Want" very much. In fact, the entire CD is sweet and will keep your groove and vibe goin' all night long :-) Dr. K - PositiveVibesRadio.net

Quality essential new soul album with an old school feel
author: Roger WilliamsHaving been informed that this CD was a goodie, I listened to the samples via this website and was immediately impressed by what I was hearing, so I contacted the guys and 'Mistah' Llou Johnson at GoldenVoice, himself a vocalist on this project, very kindly sent me a copy to review. Following exposure on www.smoothfm.com courtesy of Richard Searling, there's certainly a buzz on this album in the UK at the moment, and rightly so as the whole project fits into my personal description of complete 'modern soul', featuring a current production style yet celebrating the quality and influences of years gone by. I've played this album right the way through many times and I can't find one substandard track on it. Many of the tracks feature the currently in-vogue 'stepper' groove and also remind me of the UK 'streetsoul' early 90s vibe - the opening track Step Wit'Chu, which also gets the remix treatment later on the album, features Llou's 'Big Bazza' style soulful vocal over the insistent nagging groove, perfect for the contemporary soul scene of 2005, as is one of the highlights album, the anthemic I Got Yo Back, very much in the same mould, very melodic and Temptations-like, featuring an excellent laidback vocal from KC Lee with the main men Dick Fowler and Keith Stewart on background vocals. Track 3 Can I is another highlight, featuring a mix of the coolest old school influences possible from artists such as Marvin Gaye and a vocal arrangement reminiscent of the band Kleeer in their mid 80s heyday, a tune absolutely dripping with soul and the pick of the album for me, whilst This Time I'm Gonna Be Sweeter is bluesy downbeat soul perfection, again real old school with a hint of doo-wop, just beautiful. Keep On Steppin' featuring the excellent Marzette Griffith has found favour with the real soul fans of the UK and quite rightly, again very melodic featuring that easy going stepper rhythm, whilst Spin Me is a stunning atmospheric and incredibly soulful groover which brings me out in goosebumps every time. Mo' Betta Love featuring the excellent Marshall Titus is another wonderful bluesy and melodic doo-wop style ballad, as are the gorgeous Take Time Out For Love and Love Saved My Life which close this superb album. Real soul music and then some for 2005.
Chicago still tops in Soul and R&B!
author: Anthony LavelleWhen I first popped this CD in I thought I was listening to some unknown Barry White with Mistah Llou's - Step Wit Chu but then track #2 started with a whole new vibe and vocals and they just kept on coming! A must have CD for those who love TRU R&B. Get your significant other, your favorite drink and sit back and enjoy. Glad I was one of the first to discover this worthwhile project and talent!
