Folktronica. Jessica mixes in original writing and old-school hymns, infusing them with Dido-esque organic, electronic serum. Soaring, beautiful vocals over a mixed palette of strings, beats, organs and Lord knows what else.

One might think that a CD release in the United States in June followed by a move to Asia the next month would be a formula for a flop. But Jessica Lofbomm definitely didn’t think so. Equal parts confident performer, natural communicator, tireless adventurer, and welcoming homebody, Jessica thought it ideal to take her fresh, new offering to a brand new place with brand new people.
Sitting in her cozy South Korean apartment with sunlight filtering through the bamboo blinds, Jessica smiles and says, “I love being able to brighten someone’s day. I can do that with a song, a conversation, or by welcoming them into my home. That’s why I recorded Tonic in the first place. I’m excited to do that for my new friends in Korea as well.”
Raised in the western suburbs of Chicago, Jessica first learned about music and the big, wide world in the internationally-touring Glen Ellyn Children’s Chorus. She moved to Music City, USA (Nashville, Tennessee) to attend Belmont University in 1999 and continue her training in classical music, when she found her voice as a songwriter. Facing relationship struggles, spiritual doubts, and coming-of-age questions, songwriting was her refuge. Jessica completed college with a repertoire of personal and expressive songs, supported by her round training in classical, musical theatre, pop, folk, and jazz music.
As she finished college, Jessica found love in Adam Lofbomm, and they married in 2004. Also a world traveler and an electronic music devotee, Adam urged Jessica to take the next, risky step: record her music and share it with a wider audience.
“The Moses in me thinks you’ve called the wrong one
Can’t you just let me be comfortably common?
Send me on a safer, smaller task…”
The moment was perfect as the needed musicians, available studio space, support from family, and fitting songs all aligned. James Waddell, a producer of R&B and gospel music and Jonathan Lawson, a singer/songwriter who plays every stringed instrument combined with Jessica to create an eclectic and exciting fusion of styles.
Tonic was born. A collection of some of her early songs along with hymns she grew up singing, Jessica Lofbomm’s debut CD Tonic reflects her foundation and reference point. In music, tonic is the root, the foundation on which everything is built. It’s where a song starts and returns in the end. Alternately, tonic is a liquid medicine taken for healing. The songs on Tonic are foundational, and they explore the process of healing. “I wanted to make a record that people could go back to again and again. I wanted to help people heal and recover from the trials of life. I really feel that we were able to do that, and I am proud of it.”
Things do look bright indeed. What could have been formula for failure, for Jessica Lofbomm, it seems to be a recipe for success.
