Littlehead Grows
Littlehead Thinks was formed in the late 90's by lead singer/guitarist Matt Dauch. Zac Allentuck, an old high school buddy and someone with whom Matt had played music with over the years, joined Little Head Thinks around
Christmas of 1999. They began recording by laying down the first drum tracks at Derek Studios in Dalton, Mass. "Zac was working with his brother in the Berkshires," Matt said,"Zac told me 'we've got to record the album we've
been talking about doing for years'"
Taking the simple approach was the first and foremost priority when making the album. "We were trying to record songs from 5 years of material," said Matt. "We tried to stay with in ourselves, and I think we achieved our
goal -- but only so with the nurturing of our producer (Zac) who kept it all together sonically."
The process of making their first album, entitled 'Psychobable,' involved a lot of travel. "I would go back and forth (between East Hampton, N.Y. and
Dalton, MA) to do overdubs until Zac relocated to EH," where 'Psychobabble'was finished. "East Hampton is a surf town and that kind of vibe really drifted into the mix" said Allentuck, "We would mix all night and go on the
boat all day." The album took over a year to complete, "We took our time because we had a small budget. We enjoyed the process and we got good product," said Matt.
The musical influences reflected on the album range from Sting to The Replacements, The English Beat to Weezer. "I love great songs and sounds," said Matt, "I tried to show my respect for music that was popular, maybe 10 years ago, but make it modern. In the end, though, it's always me - just, I'm channeling my influences."
The first three songs, 'Earthbound,' 'Eat the Fat,' and 'Summer' are a mini-trilogy. "Those are the songs I have been playing the longest." said Dauch, "They belong together and make sense to me - almost like a rock
opera." 'Gina' and 'Kitchen' are also old Little Head Thinks favorites, while 'Wrong Girl' and 'Looks Like You' were written in the studio. "It was a great experience doing this, we felt like the Stones or the Beatles
pouring over the tracks."
Allentuck had been working as an engineer in San Francisco before coming back to the East Coast. During his time there he worked with such noted artists as Daniel Lanois, Mickey Hart and Tom Flye.
Little Head Thinks, with different line-ups, had been playing live a various East End venues before entering the recording studio with Ed Drohan (Aldo Nova/Swing set) on drums, Michael Hennessy (Paragon/The John Broza band) on bass and Peter "Bosco" Michne (Paragon/Poor lost souls) on guitar.
The band wouldn't comment on the name, 'Little Head Thinks', other than to say, "It comes from a drunken night of a bunch of guys playing music and talking about girls. It's a simple equation." Hopefully that same simple
equation will lead to more success for this great band (and their littleheads?)
Pyschobabble was written by singer/guitarist Matt Dauch and produced by Zac Allentuck.
