Lisa Wenger…

What can you say about Lisa Wenger? She’s a beautiful, talented and passionate performer. A fixture on the Twin Cities Blues scene for nearly a decade now Lisa has, through various incarnations delivered a funked up, stripped down, wall shakin’ and house rockin’ blend of blues based American roots music. As the Monday Blues Jam house band at the Minnesota Music Café in Saint Paul, one of the Twin Cities premier music venues, as well as playing countless nights in countless other clubs and bars in the region, Lisa and The Lisa Wenger Band have proven to be a crowd pleasing outfit. Featuring Phil Schmid on guitar, Jeremy Johnson on Drums, Bill Black on Bass and local keyboard legend Bruce McCabe filling out the sound, Lisa if free to explore, vocally, a wide swath of influences. With a set list that can run the gamut from tried and true blues classics by the likes of Koko Taylor, Etta James and beyond to reworked Rockabilly rave-ups from Wanda Jackson and even more contemporary soul and New Orleans R&B they can do it all. And throughout, Lisa sings with great confidence, control, sex appeal, a little grit and just the right amount of sass. The Lisa Wenger Band are at the forefront of the Twin Cities blues scene today and Lisa with her great voice, great stage presence and great looks is a sure bet to last a good long time in the blues world.

Can’t Stop the Girl, Lisa Wenger’s latest album, is both the title and a prophetic reality for an artist as talented as she is. What you get in this album is a band that is passionate, and a female Vocalist, who is both robust, and soulful. Lisa Wenger has the talent that all vocalists, contemporary or historical, strive to bring to their music, the ability to perform from the heart at a very high level. Her style and talent come down someplace between Patsy Kline’s vocal purity and Etta James’s soul and vocal strength, with an uncanny ability to go either direction. In the selection, We’re Gonna Make It, Lisa matches up equally with the very talented Blues Singer, Wille Walker. This track, simply stated, is incredible. Lisa is an exceptional talent, with an equally talented band. 12 great tracks on one CD, if that’s not impossible, then it’s extremely rare. George H

Wasn't the biggest fan of the blue's until a sat down and listened to lisa's CD, After awhile i found myself wanting to listen over and over. I have seen Lisa at the music cafe in St paul and she did a variety of songs but this has to be one of her best sets. Will make it a priority to catch her show next time we make to the city. Lisa has for sure found her Mojo. :o)

So, your looking for some new tunes to add to your collection, but your not sure if your going to get another CD you listen to once and then it sort of slides to the bottom of the stack into oblivion. Well don't worry 'cause this one will stay near the top. Lisa's voice is big and will blow you away. Remember that Memorex add with the guy sitting in the easy chair in front of his speakers and his hair is flowing straight back? Well, just like that. The band is tight and create just the right groove to let Lisa's voice do it's magic. While the band's roots are firmly in the blues, the tunes are not all in the same vein so you get a lot of variety all in one CD. Songs range from pure blues to rockabilly to the edge of country, R&B and soul. I have hundreds of CD's but I tend to have about 10 or so that rotate as my current favorites. Can't Stop the Girl has been in that group since August when I heard her at the Boundary Waters Blues Fest. Speaking of the BWBF my vote for the gutsiest move of the year goes to that crazy girl who opened up Saturday's show with Janis Joplin's Mercedes Benz....A cappella! Yeah it was Lisa! But Lisa's voice isn't rough edged like Janis', it's clean and clear as a bell. She nailed it. Kind of gives me the shivers just thinking about it. You owe it to yourself to see this girl live but if you can't then this is the next best thing. Buy it with confidence: Can't Stop the Girl. Of course you can't. And why would you even want to try?
