Actually, Lindsay Smith was never Prom Queen. But, thanks to vigorous campaigning, she did manage to snag a spot on the Prom Court at the end of her senior year of high school. Given that she had no particular popularity, beauty, or fashion sense at the time, she remains proud of this accomplishment and celebrates it with her second CD release, Were You Prom Queen? Recorded in Atlanta at Radio Flier Productions with the help of her many friends in the local scene (see? It's never too late to be popular), this CD is a testament to Lindsay's past songwriting achievements as well as a taste of what's yet to come as this self-proclaimed "Alternacheesefolk Queen for the New Millenium" continues her quest for rock stardom.

Since the 1999 release of her debut CD, Tales From the Fruitbat Vat, Lindsay Smith has been steadily building a following in Atlanta and throughout the Southeast with her wit, charm, and engaging music. Not content to be confined by genre labels, Lindsay has dubbed her style "alternacheesefolk," pulling her inspiration from traditional folk (the "folk"), indie rock (the "alterna"), and the 80's pop (the "cheese") of her formative years. Lindsay has shared the stage with songwriters like Kenny Howes, Angela Motter, Leslie Berry, Amy Steinberg, and Christy Snow; the Atlanta venues in which she has performed include Eddie's Attic, the Cotton Club, the Red Light Café, CJ's Landing, and Java House. In May of 2001 Lindsay was featured as an "80's music expert" on NPR's All Things Considered. In addition to performing her original songs, Lindsay has sung with many groups in Atlanta, both classical and non-classical, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus, Collegium Vocale, and the Georgia Renaissance Festival.

Lindsay Smith has been making up songs for as long as she can remember, but she didn't call herself a songwriter until she attended the Young Writers Workshop at the University of Virginia at the age of 13 to work with Charlottesville artists John D'Earth, Dawn Thompson and Greg Howard. In 1991 she moved to Atlanta, GA to attend Emory University and began classical voice training as a music major. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Emory in 1995, Lindsay acquired a student work visa for France, where she worked as a paid choral singer. After a year of working and traveling abroad, she returned to Atlanta to pursue life, love, songwriting, and other unwieldy goals.

    i knew Lindsay when she was a little girl and always felt about her that she was a fascinating person. with her music i think i've gotten to know more of that person through the stories that live at the edges of her songs.

    my dad heard a song on the radio which we thought might be For lee, but it turned out it wasn't. i was gonna send it back but gave the disc a listen and ended up keeping it. some good pop/punk tracks which get your feet moving. love Mr Magoo!!

    I knew I'd like this when I saw the CD Cover and title…and I was right. This is a really cool recording. Lindsay Smith is somewhere between pop/folk and punk. The songs are smart, funny and good to bounce along to. I bet she's a blast live as well.

    Awesome CD and best I've heard so far this year (April 2004) The album contains some real stand out tracks with hooks you just can't seem to clear and particularly New England, Sebastian and Love and Airplanes. Excellent lyrics and a variety of musical styles for which the various members of the backing band also need some praise. Every now and then you come across an album that just seems to hit somewhere and has that bit extra / something you can't define and to my mind Prom Queen falls into that category. No excuses check out the tracks for yourself...

Staying true to her alternacheesefolk roots, Smith’s versatile, intelligent songwriting is at times subtle, at others downright hilarious, but always thoughtful and poignant. If you like the intimacy of Shawn Colvin, the humor of Barenaked Ladies and/or the shear talent of the Indigo Girls, then Were You Prom Queen is the album for you.
