notes

Lily started out by playing her music in the streets and subways of Boston, capturing audiences with her expressive voice and touching melodies. Soon she began making her way into the local club scene, playing at venues such as The Middle East and TT the Bears. She has earned respect and admiration from both fans and fellow musicians. In the words of Mary Lou Lord, "Lily is Boston's best kept secret. But with a voice like that and songs to match, it won't be long until the rest of the world catches on to to this lovely new talent."

  • T Station Tales
    author: Jim

Lily Holbrook is one of those artists you wanna tell everyone about, but you feel like you're giving away a secret (don't worry, Lily, I still tell everyone anyways). Running From The Sky is what folk music should be...straight-up honesty and revelation. Then again, it's a little more than folk music, and you can really hear the influences of the likes of Tori Amos and Nine Inch Nails. Lily is just a wonderful talent, and I really think anyone could like her music. You're never too old for fairy tales.

  • piano-driven pop, both gentle and passionate

"Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt" is lily's newest release, which turned out to be amazing...i took a gamble with this earlier cd because it was only five bucks. I was not disappointed...it has the same heart and emotion...a beautiful effort! well worth the money!

  • Beautiful urban lullabyes

I suggest listening to this cd while reading Francesca Lia Block. Both are dreamlike and flowing like warm smoke about you.

  • Still find myself, running from the sky on a spaceship.
    author: Matthew B. Graybeal

Met the Artist 3 or 4 years ago at Downtown Crossing station. She was doing a Cover of Ozzy, this girl rocks. I thought her voice was that of an angel, with the passion and Edge of the Devil. She hooked me up with a Free CD, becuase I took a few inspired minutes to write her some lyrics. I'm sure she needs no help, but when you can truly feel inspired by another, I think the one's most in touch with the feeling and power of music, accpet these things graciously. This is One Native Boston Guy, who is still holding a Candle Flame burning for this performer, Lily I have absolute Faith you will make it. Don't get down, don't falter, your path is clear, you were meant for this. Rock on Girl! -Matthew B. Graybeal

Relaxing, contemplative, and even geek-friendly. "Spaceship" with its multiple connotations is a special favorite.

After reading the other reviews of this cd, I wasn't quite sure I should bother leaving this. I cannot express any better than the rest how amazing this cd is. Simply put, don't hesitate to give it a chance, you will not be disappointed.

  • I left my heart in san francisco
    author: T-Starzz

My friend bought me this CD as he passed by Lily performing on a street corner in San Francisco. I heard it once and it was like a love potion a magical spell an incantation cast upon me. I fell madly in love with this boy ... a love fueled by lily's lesbian-fantasy-esque fantistique-ness genuine passionate rawness and sweetness like i'm-gonna-get-u-jewel, u-and-that-little-messed-up-tooth-you-have, i'm-gonna-get-u-and-hug-u-and-love-u-and-love-u.

  • awesome, mellow yet very powerful
    author: Dan U2DAN@aol.com

My friend bought her cd on Newbury one day about1.5 years ago. She was playing near Guess and they work in the hair salon across from it. I heard the CD when my friend brought it home and i fell in love with her music. Now every week when i drive up to NH, I listen to Lily Holbrook, to keep me busy while i drive. Now my cd is so horrbly scratched, im gonna buy a new one! It is too bad I havent seen Lily since, i would love to have hear her in person and bought the cd on the spot.

  • Awesome girl, awesome music
    author: Amy

I grew up with Lily, so it was great to see her become such a success. This CD is even better than I expected, and that's saying a lot! Lily's voice sounds a bit like Jewel's, but her songs are more like Suzanne Vega's. But really, I'm not doing her much justice; Lily's songs are original and worth hearing on their own merits. Buy the CD and you won't be disappointed.

  • A beautiful girl with a beautiful voice, and a true artist
    author: Randy

I am from Dallas, and about 3yrs ago my best friend and I went up to Boston to just hang out and see the city. While having a cup of coffee we heard her playing across the street and had to go listen. We were amazed and enchanted by her talent. Well we both bought a copy of Running From The Sky and have listened to it many times over the last couple of years. Listening to her music always lifts me up and inspires me, it's very comforting. I really hope she makes another CD so I can hear more of her, can't seem to get enough. I hope you continue to make your beautiful music Lily, it really means alot to so many of us, thank you for being you.

  • On the night of the eclipse I first heard Lily's Starship
    author: Vanessa

A radio station was playing Lily's song Starship in early May on the night of the eclipse. I just had to have her CD after that. I searched the internet and finally found her CD here. She has such a beautifully unique voice and her songs just have to touch you.

  • Good start, but even more is possible!
    author: Reiner

Songs like "The snow", "My little diary" or "Slipping" are just great and already worth getting the CD - this is precisely how Tori Amos or Heather Nova got started. It is only a pity that some songs, in particular towards the end of the album, come out much less exciting than they could be. For your next CD, Lily, be a bit less of Grandmother's darling and a bit more of the "thirsty vampiress"...!

  • Enchanting and hypnotic!
    author: The Dance Connection

I Love her music and her voice. We use her cd at the dance studio all the time. My students are hudge fans! What an amazing talent.

  • painfully beautiful
    author: francis

with a cutting-edge sound and edgy lyrics, Lily Holbrook is about to find herself in the stratosphere of truly innovative artists. her music is an eclectic blend of influences, with an especially riveting melodic core. we will one day think of her in the same way we think of bjork, tori amos or kate bush. she's the perfect rock star.

  • Kept me from boarding the subway
    author: Stephen

I heard Lily in the Boston Subway and skipped numerous trains to listen to her. Her CD is wonderful, causing alternately joy and sorrow, always mixed with a certain childlike innocence that underlies her voice. Not to mention she is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. If you have a heart and imagination, you will not be disappointed.

  • author: Jen Wood

Running From the Sky is absolutely beautiful...i especially like the 'wolf howl' on the Little Red Riding Hood track.

  • Awesome-ness Abounds around Lily ...
author: Fan In The Red Hat

I live in Boston and have seen Lily perform several times. The most recent was tonight in the Park Street Subway stop. She played "Mermaid" from her CD for me. Lily has great range and control over her voice and often mirrors a cross between Jewel and Stevie Nicks. Her songs are often very melotic and soothing. I have a feeling she"ll be getting national air play in her future.

  • Simply Enchanting
    author: Peter

Lily Holbrook is nothing short of amazing. She is a magnet for crowds of people on the street. Her lyrics are heartfelt, her voice sincere and emotional. In Running From the Sky, she takes her listeners through a journey of imagination, childhood innocence, the loss of innocence, and a world where faeries, and mermaids can live again. Her metaphors and her words express a sincerity far beyond that of the average songwriter.

  • An insperation...
    author: Elaine Yu From Connecticut

Lily is an inspiring musician. Everytime I hear track 6: Slipping, I start tearing. Her lyrics are so beautiful. Her voice on the record is the VOICE OF AN ANGEL. The string and other instruments are a great addition to the songs. I LOVE LILY! I played RUNNING FROM THE SKY at a party and they all LOVED HER... Too bad she can't come down to Connecticut and sing... it would be the best thing in the world!

  • One Word: Great!
    author: Mc Renn

Heartfelt, meaningful, emotions abound. "Slipping" doesn't, "Spaceship" takes off, and "Dandilions" grows on you! Thanks Lily!

  • A fresh, intelligent, and talented songwriter
    author: Derek J. Punaro

I was quick to dismiss Lily the first time I heard her, assuming she was another Lilith Fair knockoff. Luckily for me, I gave her a second listen. There is so much more to her music than I initially gave her credit for. This CD reflects Lily's image - young and innocent. She doesn't pretend to have the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her lyrics show the maturity of a great songwriter and her music is simply beautiful. Lily is truly a star on the brink of a supernova.
