notes
Hauntingly harmonic melodies entice you through the dark rock'n'roll carnival known as Liesl's Wet Dress. Taking you back to the cold cobblestone streets of another century, Liesl's Wet Dress makes a musical collage of brooding, moody vocals, psychedelic guitar riffs, seductively rhythmic bass lines and tauntingly soulful lyrics.
This debut release begins with the ballad of joan, the Elephant Woman, a cautionary tale of freaks and exploitation. Through the country-esque fiddling of Not a Love Song and the exotically rhythmic anthem, Over You, to Ruby's silent evocation of a smoky speakeasy, the nine-song Shedding Skin journeys through lust, love, hate, betrayal, inspiration, desperation, desolation, divination, execution, hibernation, exfoliation and virtual transubstantiation.
The recording brings together a surly cast of characters, snapped into blissful discipline by the winsome storytelling of Antonette Goroch's songs, alongside the production mastery and rock 'n' roll tom-foolery of Greg Turner and Elton. Featuring cameos from the likes of Carrie Bradley (100 Watt Smile, The Buckets, Ed's Redeeming Qualities & frequent violinist for the Breeders) and Aaron Nudleman (Men's Club, Sunless Day), among several others, the musical core blends Antonette Goroch's hypnotic vocals with the sometimes comforting, sometimes chilling guitar of Greg Turner, the sugar'n'soul driven bass lines of Roberto Zimmerman and the always effervescent Josh Bevelacqua on drums.
