The story of The Levins
Ira Scott Levin has been a Jewish Song leader as well as Children’s entertainer in the Bay Area and beyond since 1996. Ira recorded his first children’s and folk CD with his friend and colleague T. Hallenbeck in 1999 and 2000 (Hippo on my Head and The Sultan of Time respectively). Ira and T. began to play out as a duo for a time and then took a detour from each other. In that time Ira met Julia Bordenaro at the Northern California Songwriters Association and the two of them became such good friends that they got married. While they were courting, Julia sang on Ira’s first Jewish CD: Madlik Oti and Mr. Hallenbeck lent a hand and performed with them at the CD’s release performance. After that Julia and T. joined forces in an eclectic band called Thread. Julia and T. then rejoined Ira for the production of his second children’s CD: Hyperactive Talking Cows. (Ira got to sing the first track: Ruby, the Rescue Cow on PBS Kids) and the three are the main force behind Ira’s children’s band: Uncle Eye & The Strange Change Machine. Ira and Julia have also performed across the country as a duo singing for both children’s and Jewish festivals and events.
Deciding to join forces for the upliftment of the human spirit and to bring dignity to all faiths,
They formed The Levins and began recording their first CD: 36 (based on the legend of the 36 Lamed Vavniks: the silent saints who keep the world in balance with their selfless benevolence.) T. had played with Aharon Wheels Bolsta on another recording session and recommended that he be invited to join in. Aharon’s mastery of many world styles lent itself to the group’s message. The alchemy of these musicians including guest appearances from Vocolot’s percussionist Liz Stuart and Temple Emmanuel’s stand up bass player Jonathan Ferris has created a unique form of music called “Mystic Folk”.
The CD was released in Amsterdam, where Ira and Julia were asked to join 24 acts from 15 different countries at the International Jewish Music Festival. Later this summer they will record their next CD based on the mystical poetry of Hafiz.
The Levins can perform as a five piece down to a duo.

“36” gives me chills!
author: Allene RohrerThe Levin’s CD “36” has taken over my CD player! I simply cannot get enough of this wonderful music. I was immediately impressed with the soaring harmonies and the magnitude and spirit of the song writing. Although this CD could be considered ethnocentric I find that its spiritual message crosses boundaries and will reach the heart of people from all walks of life. The melodies are infectious and the vocals are purely stellar. I can hear the smile in Mr. Levin’s voice, which in turn brightens and enlightens my day. The collaboration with T. Hallenbeck adds yet another dimension with his fresh signature style on guitar, cello and mandolin. The rhythm and songwriting are varied and always interesting. Indeed, all the performances are flawless. I keep playing it over and over and just can’t get enough. There is something other worldly about the music, yet it is completely accessible and calls to mind current artists such as “The Swell Season” and “Nickel Creek.” You couldn’t find a better collection of music if you tried – buy the CD, you won’t be sorry!
