I’ve released three albums to date. (Today is the day after Mother’s Day, 2008, I’m sitting in the Houston airport after a surprise visit home.) Between “One of the Ones’, “The Gospel According To Levi”, and “Bygones”, I think I’m right to say that fans consider “One of the Ones” their favorite collection of songs. It certainly has the best back-story.
I was living in Hoboken, NJ, working for three catering companies and grabbing every shift I could, and still it wasn’t enough to keep groceries, let alone pay rent. My pride was pummeled having spent the previous 6 months on Atlantic records only to see nothing but frustration and disappointment result from it. However, just as I was re-entering the life of the struggling artist, I had snagged this little appearance on a network TV show called “The Apprentice”. XM Radio was involved in the episode and would provide a bit of exposure to the artist of the winning team. I didn’t get paid for being on the episode, and a confidentiality agreement kept me from saying anything about the experience for nearly six months, when the episode aired.
With six months to brainstorm, and a resolve to wait no more for some suit to make my career happen, I realized that people being introduced to my talent through the episode might look for me on the internet. If I had a website and a product ready to sell, I could stand to make a little money, and gain my first national fan base.
I thumbed through songs left untouched by the Atlantic runaround. Mostly ballads. I had no means to hire a band. I had $400 left to my name, and talked this guy into giving me one time through each song at the piano. He was gracious enough to oblige, and 2 hours later I hopped on the E train with eight, very personal piano/vocal recordings.
Still I was heartbroken over the last deal going sour. With so much label interest in the past, but no successes to speak of, it finally occurred to me why that may be. How could the music industry know who I am as an artist if I’m too afraid to tell them? I had spent most of my professional pursuits pretending to be straight. Everyone always told me that I would commit career suicide if anyone knew who I really was. Regardless, I was now desperate to offer something substantial to the world, however few or many people decided to listen. I chose to reveal on the insert of the CD that each love song was written about another man, save one very special girl. This was my professional coming out, and a remarkable freeing of my creative self.
The episode aired. My team and I won the challenge, and XM radio debuted “One of the Ones” to the world. I was invited to share the XM stage with legends like Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, etc. Songs were used on “Days of Our Lives”, “Young and the Restless”, and a compilation CD for Columbia Records. “I Should Go” garnered radio attention and live national performances. All in all, $400 dollars and a lot of stubbornness started what I just keep trying to build on everyday. Come to think of it, maybe this is my favorite CD as well.

    The most amazing, touching, beautiful, musical work I've heard in a long, long (I'm giving away my age!) time. He deserves to be a household name. I hope his sexual orientation doesn't hold his career back, because he's one of the most talented musical artists to come down the pike in a while. I never thought I could fall in love with a man through a CD, but I think it's happened with Levi.

    We were fortunate to catch Levi in a small, intimate lounge concert on RSVP's Caribbean cruise last week. He was at times humble, funny, a bit of a scamp, and touching, and the name of the event, the Soulful Sounds of Levi Kreis, didn't do his music justice. There's something so fundamentally refreshing about hearing songs written by a gay performer about a gay relationship, when you know he's singing about the things you've felt in your own life. And without all the sexual overtones (though certainly not without erotic and evocative ones). And the man can play the piano like no one's business. I Should Go and Just This Good are particular standouts among an entire album of deep and heartfelt music. Quickly becoming my new favorite CD.

    LEVI KREIS: ONE OF THE ONES Raised in Eastern Tennessee and now living in Los Angeles, singer-songwriter-actor Levi Kreis' life story is as intriguing as his music. It's clear that "One of the Ones", Kreis' sophomore full-length album, is the artistic result of Kreis' years of soul-searching... as well as searching for a soulmate. Listening to "One of the Ones" makes me remember an observation that a published writer had once made about the search for romantic satisfaction in today's society. Despite the new openness about sex and sexuality running rampant through our culture at the time, many of us still felt unfulfilled and even empty when it came to relationships. This particular writer speculated that the solution goes beyond just getting naked; the problem is that we aren't getting naked enough. We stop at the flesh, and don't bare our souls. The real challenge, he concluded, was about all intimacy. As the photos on his official website prove, Levi Kreis has sex appeal. Lots of it. But despite his triple threat of model-type looks, musical talent, and youth, what stands out first and foremost about "One of the Ones" is that this performer, for his breakout album, has chosen to release a collection of stripped-down, very personal songs. This is the kind of album that most artists wait years into their careers to record, knowing that their fans want to go beyond music that just "sounds good", and want to get to know the man or woman behind that music. Sort of a "gift" to their most loyal listeners, if you will. From the opening track "I Should Go" through to the end, Levi Kreis indeed bares his soul to his listeners... and the audience knows right away that every lyric and emotion is genuine. On Kreis' official website, the album "One of the Ones" is described as, "an intimate collection of songs regarding the intricacies of human relationships". Ironically, it's a song ostensibly about the fear of intimacy, the stunning "I Should Go", when the listener is first hooked in by Kreis' naked emotion: "I should go, Before my will gets any weaker, And my eyes begin to linger, Longer than they should; I should go, Before I lose my sense of reason, And this hour holds more meaning, Than it ever could; I should go..." Equally as bold a choice is the fact that "One of the Ones" is entirely driven by piano and vocals. Although he can belt it out on the album's live finale "Man Outta Me", Kreis keeps his distinctive voice in the hauntingly mellow to mid-pitch range, with subtle emotional complexities throughout. This singer doesn't need to growl or scream to convey strength, use melodramatic inflections to convey vulnerability, or reach into the bag of technological tricks to make any new fans or critics take notice. His lyrics are simple, with a distinct absence of metaphor or symbolism. The intense "Kiss U Yet" conveys the priceless feeling of the anticipation just before that first kiss, and the gospel flavors of "Just This Good" (complete with a "Hallelujah!") equate spiritual fulfillment with the joy of finding that certain somebody here on earth. Another highlight on the album is "Lonely Sunday Morning", where Kreis' piano musically recreates the natural beauty of a clear, quiet Sunday morning-- yet the imagery is juxtaposed alongside some heartwrenching lyrics about lyrics about loneliness: "I should just crawl back in bed, Shut out my heart turn off my head; But it's impossible to do, Cause my whole world was you; It's a lonely Sunday morning, Cause you left me without warning; And I don't know how to make it, Through this lonely Sunday morning..." There are also two live tracks on "One of the Ones", including the jazz-flavored "Kiss U Yet" and the crowd-pleasing album closer "Man Outta Me". For that grand finale, we hear gasps of astonishment and squeals of pleasure from the audience. No doubt, their reaction is from witnessing Kreis undergo something of an onstage spiritual catharsis through his music. Levi Kreis new album seems to be the result of years of his revelations in the matters of heart and soul, set to music. "One of the Ones" will likely provoke Levi's loyal fans-- current and soon-to-be-- to experience their own revelations as well.

    Really great CD. The songs are all very warm, very personal. As you listen you can really get an insight into what the writer was feeling as they wrote the song, and you really start to feel for them. It's amazing. Pick a cold, rainy day, curl up next to the window, and listen away!

    The songs on this CD reachs my boyfriend (Gay Partner) and I to the deepest parts of our hearts and souls. We love the style of his songs and the way he sings them, like he feels them. Lonely Sunday Morning always makes me feel sad, to me it feels like someone has come into one's life filling it with happiness and love then leaves it just as quickly, leaving that person feeling empty and alone.

As a hearing impaired person, I gravitate to people who have beautiful voices and of course, love the piano background as well. Everything is so pure, so clear and wonderful!     In an age when true musical talent is often pushed to the wayside, and pop music rules the stage, it is wonderful to be exposed to a new artist such as Levi. The songs are so full of emotion and meaning that they really do become richer with each listening. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform in person only days after purchasing the CD. He is even more amazing when he is sitting 20 feet away playing his piano as if he were simply carrying on a conversation with a best friend. :)

    A voice and a piano doesn't seem like much on paper but LEVI KREIS trancends expectations and delivers heart-felt pop with a voice that defines maturity. Every so often while listening to songs on ONE OF THE ONES I thought a particular track (hell most of them) would have gained tremendously from an orchestrated arrangement. When additional instrumentation was added in the final two cuts (both recorded live) I realized the folly of my ways: the man's brilliance stands on its own. The one surprise for me was the gospel-tinged "Just this good" which reminded me of no less a performer than Aretha Franklin, at the height of her powers. Mr. Kreis has renewed my faith in the power of the SONGWRITER and its protagonist.

This CD is perfect for all occasions, as background or loud as it can go. Lonely Sunday Morning literally made me stop what I was doing and cry. Recommend this album to everyone, a must have.

    I heard Levi's music online at a site advertising his tour and fell in love right off the bat. "Lonely Sunday Morning" almost made me cry the first time I heard it! There's not a single song on the disc that doesn't speak to me somehow..."With You" still chokes me up. My only complaint is that there are only 10 songs...I can't wait for the next disc!

    I love this CD! Interesting that I'm currently on Long Island, settling back here in NY, and I popped Mr. Kreis's CD in the player while I was driving. While all the songs speak to me personally, and to many of us, the trials and tribulations of our relationships growing up from confused and painful boyhood into manhood...track 6 made me cry. A good cry. A cathartic cry. So beautifully sung and written, the primal pain of every young gayboy making his way in a hostile, cruel, and unfeeling world often without sincere guidance, but somehow finding the strength within himself once he's lost everything, and then sees the hope that lies around him, the "other life," which is a power within all of us. As a Memphis gay boy who ran off to NYC after high school and coming out (with tragic consequences), and just now driving through the old NY and LI streets, seeing some of the old people with new faces, this song spoke to me, at the right time. I love the CD! Many of the songs sound like the song of Memphis: a dash of gospel, a dash of blues, triumph through hardship, and a sincere heart on a solitary sojourn for truth where men, as friends and as lovers, appear and then disappear but with enduring significance, with the vague hope one day to come to a home. Bravo, Mr. Kreis!

    I saw Levi Kreis performing in Portland, Oregon while I was visiting my family and my partner. Up to that day I have never heard anything about the artist, but was assured about his tremendously greatness by other friends. His performance was wonderful, touching and inspiring.     This is not usually the kind of music I'm into, but this CD is incredibly good. Levi is a fantastic songwriter with an absolutely beautiful voice. Every single song on this CD is great and sung with soulful passion, especially the last two live recordings "Kiss You Yet" and "Man Outta Me". This guy is a rare talent.

    I just separated from my partner of nearly 11 years and I came across an article about Levi on gay.com... I listened to the 3 tracks that were available on that site and was instantly drawn into Lonely Sunday Morning and Man Outta Me (Each one struck a different chord about the same relationship...) I went to Levi's site and couldn't order this CD fast enough after hearing clips from the rest of it. The intimate nature of just Levi's fabulous voice and piano playing along with the personal nature of his lyrics have been a great help to me during the past few weeks and I can't seem to stop playing this CD every chance I get. This is a must have for anyone who's ever been in any kind of relationship, good or bad. My personal favorites at this moment are Love in Another Light, Man Outta Me and I Should Go, though I now know the words to every track on this CD. I can't wait until Levi comes to Pittsburgh so I can see him perform live.

    Having heard Levi on The Apprentice, I wanted to hear more. This CD didn't disappoint. His vocals are melodic and expressive, his lyrics are personal and heartfelt. Levi has found a new fan in me. I am definitely going to check him out when he comes to Seattle, and I hope that he releases another CD (with the song he sang on The Apprentice????) so that I can buy it too. If you are a fan of the great piano men (Billy Joel, Harry Connick, Jr., etc.) this CD is a must for your library. Levi should be the next big thing.

    It was pure luck that I stumbled upon this gem while checking out the top sellers list. The piano and the voice are hypnotic - love it! I particularly liked track 1, I heard the sample and was sold. However, track 2, 3 and the song "Kiss you yet" are all very good. As a fellow songwriter, the lyrics are well written and definitely strike a common chord here and there - regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Extremely enjoyable.. . great CD!

    Some time ago, I saw him perform "Stained Glass Windows" at the end of "Southern Baptist Sissies" (go,Go,GO SEE IT), what a POWERFUL song and performance. I met him afterward (what a sweetie and a cutie), and bought a CD then. It was disappointing in that the quality did not deliver his voice properly. I've been WAITING for something great.     Heard him on the Apprentice. Loved it immediately. I have note listened to anything else since I got the cd two weeks ago. Problem is the homosexual content. If I had not caught on it would have been fine, but now when he say "the way your body curves beneath your clothes" I think of another man. I am straight so that does not help. However, it proves that his music is inspiring and powerful. I would love to see him in concert, and would really like some more of his music.

He has a wonderful honesty and rawness to his voice that I cannot stop listening to. I reccomend this CD with as many stars as they will allow. You go Levi!!!!

    As a trained musician myself, I find it difficult to locate music that I consider acceptable in the secular field. Imagine my surprise when I came across Levi and his silky, sultry voice accompanied by those impressive piano skills! I have listened to his CD repeatedly and simply cannot wait for upcoming releases. Levi is certainly an artist that I would wait in line to buy tickets for and that is saying a lot! If you have an opportunity to see/hear him in person - take it. He will not disappoint.

    Levi has one of those voices that moves your soul because it comes from his soul. The quality, range and emotion in his voice are very impressive. After hearing this CD I purchased several copies to give away as gifts to friends who have an appreciation for vocal compilations or are actually vocalist themselves.

    After "finding" Levi on the Apprentice, I must say the CD takes off in a different direction than the single from the show. This is not a bad thing. I love Levi's voice and it is really highlighted on the CD being that its just him and the piano. The piano work is good (not great, but great wasn't expected, as this still is pop) and nearly every song has a wonderful hook that actually does what its supposed to: grab you and make you want to sing along. Lyrically, the songs do tend to sound the same, same topic, same format, but the great thing is, that, if not all, at least a few will touch you and you'll find that relating to them is easy. Levi has promise. Hopefully this is a big enough start for him to get more into the mainstream of things. I think he does this "pop piano" format very successfully but I also think he pulls off "alternative" as showcased on the Apprentice. Maybe the next CD will have a mix of both? We can hope. The CD is a great buy at such a low price and you'd seriously be missing a piece to your collection in this genre without this CD.
